sorry but it is. it just is. it's still funny

Mobius

I was watching Carry On Camping the other day, and never realised Austin Powers borrowed the "silhouette in a tent which looks like rude things are happening" gag from there

the first Austin Powers is one of the funniest films ever. the henchmen, the reversing truck, "who throws his shoe?!?"

fun fact: actor who played Random Task is in prison under a life sentence.

well maybe not that fun.

thenoise

I had the misfortune to be at a party when the second one was on, an excruciating couple of hours. At least everybody else enjoyed it.

Is the first significantly better? Or should I accept that it is not for me?

Love so many lines in that Jerry Springer scene. "He's biting me! He's biting me! The f*****s biting me!"

The first is better, but if you found the second one so excrutiating then it's probably not for you.

idunnosomename

the first is infinitely better, absolute craft. the second is total shit

JamesTC

Here, have a piece of gum.

The second one is best because Heather Graham is in it.

First one is funnier. You won't like the first one if you don't like the second.

Jesus, that's not fun at all!

I still like all the Austin Powerses. Even Goldmember, which everyone has since decided is shit, was one of the most laugh-out-loudy cinema screenings I've ever attended.

The first one was on terrestrial TV in the UK all the time in the late 90s. I can't count how many times I saw it, even though I was only 8 or so and probably didn't understand half of it properly. I even got the soundtrack for Christmas. It's still the best, obviously, but the other two have their moments.

Yeah, Goldmember is still a laugh. "There are two things I can't stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other people's cultures... and the Dutch!"

I love the first one and hate the second one, this man is a liar!

The gag with Powers disguising himself by standing on Mini Me's shoulders is really funny (as is the obligatory shadow-puppet sequence that follows). I think they were wise to call it quits there, though. I think Myers has been talking about bringing it back for a while, which I don't see being anything other than embarrassing.

DrGreggles

I assume the OP is referring to the first one and, yes, it's fucking funny.

The second one wasn't, and I never saw the third one.

Captain Z

I saw the second one first, so I generally find 1 and 2 equally funny. Having seen the 1967 Casino Royale spoof recently, it's obvious that Austin Powers was very heavily influenced by it.

Gulftastic

Second is best because Heather Graham and Susanna Hoffs.

Although the latter can't save the third, which is shite.

Goldentony

Goldmember does have "MOLE! bloody MOOOOLE we're not supposed to talk about the bloody mole but there's bloody mole winking me RIGHT IN THE FACE"

3 minutes, in look at the way he points at him! MOLE bloody MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE

bgmnts

Unapologetically love Austin Powers, the first one especially.

The first one has him frozen in 1967 and revived in 1997 right? We're just a short half decade away from the point where it's another 30 years on and he'd now be a 90s Britpop/ lounge revivalist type frozen in 1997 and awoken in the 2020s. :/

Isn't Elvis Costello in the 2nd bit and he does a song on a bus.

Not on a bus, but he and Burt Bacharach sing "I'll Never Fall In Love Again"

Magnum Valentino

Yeah, and it's Bacharach on his own on the bus, in 1.

The Mollusk

Madhair gets it catastrophically wrong again it seems! Another thread tanked by negative replies.

shoulders

Yes, it's still funny.

First one is the best objectively, but the other two have many similarly funny moments despite being clunky and occasionally very tedious.

Jumblegraws

I saw the second one first. It was my first time watching anything above a PG rating at the cinema. I didn't think it was possible to laugh at a film so hard as I did during the Jerry Springer sequence. We rented it when it came out on video and I only occasionally cracked a smile. Not sure if the difference in reaction had more to do with seeing it for the first time or seeing it with a cinema audience.

Anyway, I still think the first one is a solid comedy. What do people here think of the criticism that spoofing spy-thrillers of that era is redundant because the source material was already tongue-in-cheek much of the time? Tell me what to think.

shoulders

That element doesn't really matter as the film's focus is on being funny. The  success of it doesn't hinge on whether there was a need for spy stuff to be spoofed. I remember the Director's Commentary saying it was heavily influenced by In Like Flint, which of course already spoofed spy films and tv shows (in a much more low key, deadpan way) back in the 1960s. There are layers of cultural ephemera and homage going on.

The Lurker

For what it's worth, I've only seen Goldmember and that is fucking funny. The subtitles scene is a personal favourite of mine, along with the "and the Dutch" line. The last time I saw it was a few years ago on TV and there was a lot of innuendo that went right over my head as a young'un.

To be fair, I was only three when the first film came out so I should probably give it a watch.

Utter Shit

The scene where he's trying to turn the roller around is insanely funny.

My favourite bit.
For some reason I find things going on slightly too long hilarious.
