I first heard that in Arrested Development. Michael has to keep explaining that it's for a "bit"... I forget the context now.

I suppose it is a handy expression but it is quite ugly

It's never bothered me one iota.

I thought it was a phrase only used on American radio to refer to pre-prepared comedy segments they'd do? I'm guessing it's their equivalent of "taking the piss" (as in acting disingenuously for humorous effect)?

The phrase seems to have tailed off in the last five years though, I don't really see it much anymore.
