Quote from: JaDanketies on May 21, 2022, 02:04:49 PMIn fairness Father Ted was pretty boundary-pushing at the time. I remember being told not to talk with my heavily-Catholic Irish cousins about it. Although it turned out that they also watched it. Suppose he was standing on the shoulders of  The Life of Brian though

Ted did show a level of irreverence towards the church that was beyond what you'd expect on mainstream Irish tv but at a time when that was likely to happen. It's often assumed that RTE rejected it but as Linehan explained, they never considered approaching them because regardless of the subject matter, RTE wouldn't have been capable of making that type of sitcom. Had it been an RTE production you'd  imagine they'd have gotten a measure of editorial interference but that's a moot point really.

Dermot Morgan was doing his Fr Trendy character on prime time telly in the early 80s which was a gentler satire but I don't think there was any controversy about that. When Ted got popular I think there may have been a few disgruntled sermons but with abuse and other scandals coming to light the status of the church had been considerably eroded by that point. As you say Life of Brian being unbanned is also significant. Also Morgan and Frank Kelly were beloved household names here. The most controversial thing Morgan did was the satirical radio show Scrap Saturday, which was axed in 1991, very likely due to political pressure.

I remember my Irish devout Catholic grandparents loving Father Ted at the time. They did live in England by then, not that I think that necessarily changes anything.

Quote from: Martin Van Buren Stan on May 21, 2022, 03:21:27 PMHow many former colleagues have openly condemned Linehan? I remember Moran giving a vague, both sides answer when asked about him. Hannon has always been very unpolitical. I'm pretty sure he's only ever written one political song.

There was some pointedly pro-trans bit in Moran's recent standup wasn't there.

I think in most cases their careers have progressed beyond the point that they'd have to. Makes sense that Matt Berry would be asked about that scene and expected to have thought about it. But with Ayowade, Parkinson and O'Dowd, it'd be like asking Kylie about someone who worked on Neighbours. You can assume their position is a distant "cunt's gone bananas", which you can't with Hannon or anyone working with him recently.

besides the obvious gold in that Wack Ass Ferguson video it's been bugging me who he reminded me of until now

i think you're right to be honest. O'Hanlon's just spent years working on that police programme in the sun, hardly like he's got to tow the line for scraps from Linehan's table.

Quote from: wrec on May 21, 2022, 03:17:10 PMYes. Shouldn't be forgotten that Mathews has defended his bananas friend, and Hannon seemed irritated to be asked about him, and refused to be drawn on his thoughts on it. In both cases they obviously don't see the behaviour and rhetoric as a problem, just the fact that it's affected the production. Shameful shit from the pair of them IMO.

agree with this too though I've not seen any quotes from Matthews so can't really comment, besides yeah it's pretty shameful. it's not like defending writing for Paedogeddon, this is just targeted abuse and harassment and there needs to be a better response than just "belt up, take some money and get your name off this you're ruining it for the rest of us!"

jobotic

I'm not demanding that people who worked with him years ago publicly condemn him, whether they are big stars now or not.

But if you are working with now (or two years ago) like Hannon you have questions to answer.

We work together in the morning, then he sends some porn related abuse to teenage girls, then I run some of my songs by him.

Paywalled, but this is the relevant interview.
He mentions that he reads the substack.

Alberon

There is the unpleasant possibility that Mathews is as big a cunt as Linehan but not as bananas.

Dr Rock

I hope the next Pope is actually called Ted. That's more likely to happen than Pope Ted ever seeing he light of day.

DrGreggles

I think the reason a lot of famous people don't comment on it is because they know the abuse they'll get.
Pretty sure it's why a lot of BC's former colleagues don't call him out.

Moved a post to this thread, if any of you want to continue the discussion with him there. Thanks.

Sorry fella, I felt it might have been a controversial post, and was unaware of the other thread. Apologies.

Yes, they'll get judged however they respond.

pretty much. must've only taken a few blindsiding "hey what do you think of this JK Rowling thing? [choose your answer wisely]" tweets to former colleagues and their wives for the warnings to spread.

to say nothing of that Matt Lucas message! fuck me

Katherine Deves lost in the Aussie election tonight.  I'd usually say "one less bitch!" at this point,  but she never held a seat in the first place.

Touché!

Although maybe Rorschach would be of the opinion that as the whole 'split infinitive' thing is based on the fact that Latin verbs were one word and therefore could not be split, it's a nonsense rule.

Surely the Netflix diversity team he's referring to will have been pushing for more strong roles for women, too.
Does he even pretend to be a feminist and LGB ally any more?

Split modal, rather than infinitive, against which I don't really think there's ever been much of a prohibition. Although I suppose one could quibble as to whether 100% is an adverb.
