Quote from: pigamus on May 21, 2022, 06:49:28 PMIt is. I was just winding you up.

It's a good one!

Have you heard the lengths that Kermode and Mayo go to in order not to end their sentences with a preposition?

This is the kind of thing up with which I will not put!

Edit: to remove split infinitive

Quote from: greencalx on May 21, 2022, 08:03:48 PMSplit modal, rather than infinitive, against which I don't really think there's ever been much of a prohibition. Although I suppose one could quibble as to whether 100% is an adverb.

And it appears I was winding you up as well.

It's my daughter's birthday today, I'll ask her.

No answer one way or the other, she just looked a bit confused and then said 'butts'.

Quote from: jobotic on May 21, 2022, 01:58:55 PMLinehan was well into his hate career by the time Hannon is talking about. Nice.

He hadn't completely transformed into Bananacunt by then. He was well on his way. But if you weren't permanently online - and Neil Hannon must be one of the least online artists - then you could be forgiven for not knowing just how vile Linehan was.

I posted this in an earlier thread. It's the last thing I can find that Hannon said about Linehan, from January this year:

QuoteOne much-anticipated project that will not, unfortunately, be happening is the musical adaptation of Father Ted, Pope Ted, for which he was to have written the songs. It has been derailed in part because of its co-creator Graham Linehan's controversial statements on trans issues.

When I bring it up, Hannon's cheeriness is momentarily replaced by tight-lipped froideur. Although he is still in touch with Linehan, a friend of many decades standing, the only comment that he makes now is "It was fun working on it, but it wasn't proving easy. It's been difficult to watch what's happened. I believe in free speech, but I also very much believe in people's perfect right to remain completely silent on issues that they don't feel they can speak on. And that's all I want to say about it."

At the time I was disappointed that it was so ambiguous (I'd love The Divine Comedy to nail their colours to the mast by releasing a 7" of My Lovely Horse and donating all the profits to Mermaids), but in the real world it could easily be interpreted as "My old mate's gone bananas. I wish he hadn't. I'm no expert on trans rights, so I don't know what I could say that won't get me in a load of trouble I can't be arsed dealing with."

Which maybe isn't good enough. But it is understandable if he just wants to write music and help his wife run her animal sanctuary.

Personally I like to go out for a meal with my partner and spend time with friends and family, but whatever you're into

Floorsharter, "everyone knows" you're a fucking liar.

Point to these "sterilised" children. CHILDREN. Not an 18 year old. Not a 20 year old  you've decided is basically a child because they're on the autism spectrum. Oh that's right they don't exist.

Quote from: samadriel on May 21, 2022, 06:35:31 PMKatherine Deves lost in the Aussie election tonight.  I'd usually say "one less bitch!" at this point,  but she never held a seat in the first place.

I've read, but am not informed enough to state for certain that Scott Morrison ran a lot of transphobic campaigning, which seems to have driven a backlash which led to some of the seat losses?  I certainly hope so, good on ya, ya Aussie beauts.

Idc about sterilised children. You shouldn't be having kids when you're that young anyway.

If I'd got sterilised as a kid it would've saved a fortune on rubber johnnies amirite?!

Kankurette

I can't even get sterilised as an adult, let alone a child, Maya, you fucking clagnut.

To be honest, I can understand people who were actual friends with Glinner not wanting to comment publicly on his behaviour. To us he might always have seemed like a thin-skinned gobshite (even before his bananafication), but to these people he's a former friend with whom they shared good times, and pointing out what a cunt he is might seem more like abusing someone who's gone quite mad than giving him the criticism he deserves. Plus there's the old punching down dilemma, which doesn't apply to most (any?) of us here.

phes

It's hard to believe that anyone had a good time ever with Graham Linehan. He's been a fucking misery since forever

If someone I knew had gone so publicly bananas and I could tell nothing could reason with them would I still effectively pick a fight with them?

I probably wouldn't.

Quote from: Martin Van Buren Stan on May 21, 2022, 03:21:27 PMHow many former colleagues have openly condemned Linehan? I remember Moran giving a vague, both sides answer when asked about him. Hannon has always been very unpolitical. I'm pretty sure he's only ever written one political song.

Was this the Moran quote you meant? I thought it was pretty clear.

"Graham's free to say what he wants, obviously. He's also free to be in the consequences of that. We all are."

Add me to the list of people who found SOPHIE through these threads, and now can't get enough of her music. Absolutely phenomenal, been listening to everything I can find for the past couple of weeks.

It's not about picking a fight with them. It's about saying what you believe is right. If someone loses their shit because they cannot cope with that, it's on them.

I have lost two of my closest friends who are now fucking terfs. Would I publicly state that I back trans people even if it pisses my former friends off? Yes I fucking would. They're bigots now. Fuck them.

That is suspected as one reason the independents in ex-Liberal seats have done so well. I think a lot of Liberal voters who value civility were appalled when our prime minister and his crony suddenly injected Australian politics with all that "what is a woman" garbage. That anti-trans shit was pretty much something that happened overseas until Scott Morrison and Deves started adulthumanfemaleing all over the walls.

As someone who does not follow this, are we actually sterilising and experimenting on children?

If not, i'm starting to think this is some kind survivalist-esque fantasising now. As if they actually want bad things to happen to kids so they can be outraged and have a cause.

Emptiness.

It's nice to know it isn't just UK conservatives who will throw any people under the bus if it wins them some votes.

Aw yeah, she was amazing. Such a loss to musical culture. I would have loved to see how she developed over time, given how amazing her first album was.

boki

There's something that's been playing on my mind for quite some time now, but it seems fairly facile to even mention in the light of all the hoo-ha that GL has created with his actions, but I figure now's as good a time as any:

I just don't think that a musical about Ted Crilly becoming Pope would be much cop even if the writers were still on top of their game. It's half a rung above a Partridge pitch.

"Experimenting on" = using puberty blockers, which TERFs like to pretend are experimental and untested even though they've been in use for 30 years or so now.

"Sterilising" = as far as I can tell it's a rhetorical slight of hand that (wrongly) equates puberty blockers with HRT and HRT with gender confirmation surgery, eliding the vast gap in time between, say, an 11-year-old going on the blockers while they figure out their gender, and then - ten years or more later, having worked out where they are, started HRT after turning 16 and undergone surgery some time (likely a considerable time, given how long the waiting lists can be) after passing 18 - completing their transition.

It's proper Brass Eye "Can this 10 year old child have gender reassignment surgery now she's 25?" stuff, but of course the rhetoric and the echo chamber is designed to obfuscate the reality of the situation and dissuade any deep analysis.

Agreed. It's never seemed appealing even before all this business.

Having said that I'm not really a musical theatre fan so I was never going to be the target market anyway, and if there's any artform where you can get away with being so on the nose that you could suffocate Pinocchio, it's that.
