Well, if we're going down that route...

Ok maybe not weirdly similar as one influenced the next in turn.

The Mollusk

Wow I've just noticed the apostrophe in track 1 of that Manics album. Just when you think a song title can't get any more cringe you notice a grammatical error.

JesusAndYourBush

Ha, scrolling through all those Mike Oldfields by the time I was near the end I was going 'Aargh please make it stop!'

Wow, that can't be a coincidence. I hope Adele gets into acting and makes a lighthearted biopic about Ma Barker called Barker and rips off this album cover, right down to the soppy grin.

DJ Bob Hoskins

Fuck me, that's so awful it hurts my eyes. Although appositely, it is a great example of the kind of 'thrown together on a Gateway 2000' aesthetic which was common at the turn of the millennium.

It's also remarkably similar to the final 30 seconds of his 'Pictures in the Dark' video from a decade earlier:

Petey Pate

If Mike Oldfield counts then we can have John Zorn's 50th birthday celebration.

etc. etc.

To be fair, that similarity isn't *that* weird.

Not sure parodies or homages count as "weirdly similar", myself.

even if they were owned by the Krays?

Ambient Sheep

Hah, I have that Oldfield v. The Orb CD, had never realised the design was a riff on Tubular Bells until now!

Critcho

This thread moved me to dust off the CAB account I didn't realise I had, because years and years ago I noticed a funny trend of album covers based around hands and arms, and started a silly habit of noting the name down every time I came across a new one. It's all paying off now!!

Without further ado, here is my hand/arm album cover compendium, loosely grouped by similarity:

Autopsy Turvey

The Hexenhaus/Morbid Angel one is obvious, but this is less commented upon, perhaps because only about twelve people noticed the career of Year Zero. The Liverpool doomsters' second and last album from 1995:

And the bum-free alternate sleeve of the Strokes debut:

Eventually ending up on a science book:

that's less 'weirldy similar' and more 'used the same library image', which in this case is "Big Bang', a particle collision trace that was recorded in the CERN Big European Bubble Chamber:

Quite so, I was responding here more to the OP's observation that "It's also interesting when different artists use the same (or similar) archive photo, and you get to ponder over who used it more appropriately." In this case, I think the book uses it best.

Glad to pin the source down, many thanks! The mind boggles.

The Mollusk

Great collection @Critcho ! Really enjoyed having a scroll through all that.

Have you considered adding this Converge album to the collection?

chutnut

First thing I thought was 'I wonder how far I'll have to scroll to get to GYBE', and the answer was surprisingly far

Critcho

Ah, that's only because I grouped it with the 'two disembodied, drawn hands' sub-category of hand album sleeves! The ordering says nothing about what I think of them (or if I've even heard them) - Skinny Fists is definitely an essential hand album in my book.

And thanks for the new additions, they're going on the list! The project never ends...
