Quote from: Barry Admin on May 14, 2022, 02:02:18 PMYeah that's all fair enough. It's kind of an odd one as it is somewhat trite ass a concept, but at the same time it's got robotic bugs crawling out of her fanny, so I do think that is kind off shocking, yet people here seem blasé about it. 🤷♂️

The thing is, it is trite, but then that's by design, presumably. It's like when people moan that Banksy's art is so simplistic and superficial, but that's why it's instantly recognisable and mainstream; the simplicity and accessibility of the imagery makes it more immediately impactful than something more sophisticated and "interesting". Bugs and trees gushing out of Madonna's fanny is the intended headline here, not whether it captures the profound complexity of human experience.

That said, I'm not really convinced this is shocking in the year 2022, as musicians are constantly provocative now in ways they weren't 30 years ago when Madonna was a rising star. But I do think its missing the point a bit to be assessing it's value as a metaphor rather than as a piece of celebrity pop art.

Saw someone post a picture of her from her 80's sex book with her topless at the side of the road with a fag in her gob as justification of her always being daring and to be honest that seemed a lot more daring just through context of the photo (I wasn't old enough to appraise attitudes of the 80's at the time).

Her video for Like a Prayer is really shocking, I think. Sexually aroused by a statue of a black saint. Stigmata. Burning crosses. There's value in such blunt provocation in of itself.

Quote from: Johnny Yesno on May 14, 2022, 02:25:43 PMIt's because we see the world serve up shocking realities on a daily basis. I watched a video of a murdered jounalist's funeral getting attacked by police yesterday. What kind of sheltered people is this needy rolleye oak-boomer stuff going to shock?

I was gonna touch on something similar to this. I watched that video, but make a point of veering away from gore and such these days. Seems to me like a lot more people are into watching and spreading really awful shit on a daily basis, or are incredibly into porn. I'm not, so don't think I'm anywhere near as desensitised.

I dunno how to finish this post really! I'm not sure that people can't still be shocked by things. My thoughts about the whole issue are very muddled, but I'm just basically glad Madonna is still doing what she always did, even if she can be a bit shit with it:

(Someone really should mention ROK TV at some point, so I'm doing that now.)

Yeah that's probably my favourite song/video of hers.

Oh, absolutely. I'm not one for those gore videos either. I don't need that in my life. In this case, I was shocked by the funeral story anyway and watched the video to see for myself what had happened.

Hahaha! You could well have hit on another reason why Madge's antics elicit derision rather than shock on these boards.
