The Labour thread is in danger of being derailed! I know, very odd. So in an attempt to save it, have this thread devoted to them lovely ladies of Page 3.

(sorry Underturd, I'm using your post as the link)
Quote from: Underturd on March 13, 2024, 11:08:45 AMI never saw the point of banning page 3. If you don't like it don't buy it. Not complicated.

Personally, I'd rate Linda Lusardi over Sam Fox, so... erm... <gets lost in a trawl of GIS and backwater blogs>

Underturd

That's okay, it makes me feel useful :-)

They never actually show it going in do they? Waste of time.

After 50 years of female privilege, I reckon it's about time us blokes have a chance. The next 50 years should feature solely sexy blokes, eventually moving onto alternate weeks men and women (with a proportional representation for the in betweenses, of course).

I only look at it to read the insightful commentary provided by the models, like why Tony Blair was right to go to war in Iraq and why elderly multi-millionaire media tycoons shouldn't have to pay taxes.

these libidinal underpinnings emanicipatory yet

If it was brought back then it would be weird if it was celebrated like the new version of Gladiators, and the new page 3 girls made millions due to increased popularity of their Only Fans accounts.

What do they put on Page 4? Nobody's ever found out

I was all for it, but I'll concede it had it's knockers.

We used to have The Sun delivered straight to the door, no need to wait for it to download.

there was a lot of uplift from beneath and support from behind. and they milked it right up until it was canned, the nipples

thus causing a cleavage in the history of fleet street. the rumours are hard to keep contained and some people say it will bounce back. but i think thats a lot of pap.

Butchers Blind

I always though it was wierd. Don't get me wrong, I like ladies breasts, but to dedicate a whole page of a national newspaer to them every day, just odd.

You weren't keeping abreast of what was going on.

Kier Starmer announces "Bring Back Lads Mags" campaign for election, but now instead of birds and what whisky will impress your mates its all going to be about explaining what consent and respect are why they're cool and radical

first issue comes with free rap CD performed by the most famous goalkeepers the 90s premier league has to offer covering such themes as prostate health awareness and energy drink addiction. to promote this we're going to put the slogans "let people enjoy things" and "don't yuck someone else's yum" on the shirts of all UK athletes in the olympics.

Yeah, Channel 4 did a documentary on Page 3 and one of the girls they spoke to about her experiences doing it. She had a scrapbook of her appearances and they had to blur some of them out, I assume she was one of the last ones to shoot for Page 3 that young.

What did The Sun getting rid of page 3 & the Star having the girls at least have a bra on now, and the Lad's Mags dying around the same time actually achieve? Far and away the least offensive bit in either paper anyway.

On some level I understand and towards the end it was a proper relic but all that energy towards that and it could have been channeled into something more worthwhile.

holyzombiejesus

I found some of the debate on this a bit weird, especially for a generally left wing thread. Stuff like this

Quote from: Deano on March 13, 2024, 03:49:40 PMThe anti-page 3 campaign was a bizarre mix of:
  • Puritans who are anti-porn and anti-sex work in all forms and think bare nipples are evil
  • Feminists who thought it was derogatory to women in the context it was in (the inevitable joke about the woman in question being stupid, and that it was only ever women pictured)
  • The "think of the children" lobby who are fine with nipples but can we not have them in a newspaper thanks.
That these groups were able to work together is probably why it so successful, but they were all approching it from very different directions.

iirc sam fox was 15 or 16.

growing up knowing people who hated the sun over things like ireland and hillsborough, the consensus seemed to be that it was for paedophiles since it was either an actual teenager or someone dressed in a school girl costume. you cant even say that the sun got close to the line with sexualising children, since it was explicit about it. its a laugh reading even some anti-page 3 things that spoke of how it was different to regular porn and tried to be tasteful, etc. no it was nonce material and even in the 90s when they tried to stick to famous faces they still went looking for students. i seem to recall a "hottest student" campaign in the sun in either 1999 or 2000 when some of the scumbags i knew were phwoaring over how they were younger. despite being teenagers themselves.

visual shorthand for a "page 3 girl" was a cheap straw hat and a school tie

Stoneage Dinosaurs

This all takes me back to the CaB of about ten years ago when every discussion of anything gender / feminism related would devolve into, at worst, men indignant at the idea of having to reconsider their position of anything at all combined with barely-even-ironic misogyny, and at best, the same two or three jokes over and over again. I was of course far too woke and reconstructed to have a part in any of that at all and don't you dare go back through my posting history to try and prove me wrong
