Sometime in the late 70's we were visited by some American relatives and I noticed them saying hi instead of hello and I thought it was interesting and adopted that greeting myself.  Not long after my friends were also saying it.  If it's my fault for introducing hi to this country then I'm truly sorry.


Americans these days seem to exclusively say "hey" or "how's it goin" as a greeting. I always say "hey" now because I don't like saying "alright?" and if you say it in America they give you a quizzical look and say "Erm, yeah I'm fine"

I've been following the Louis Theroux method of saying "How are you doing?" and continuing without a pause as if it doesn't need an answer.
