Excellent review by Simon Reynolds that I'd not read before today:

https://www.bookforum.com/print/2005/in-his-long-awaited-memoir-morrissey-sheds-his-wilting-wallflower-image-12774

His delicate persona of 1983-86 hid his homoerotic attraction to macho violence (in an incipiently fascist way) which Reynolds documents well.

Morrissey being a fan of Julie Burchill doesn't surprise me at all, given their politics. As for him being a voice of the downtrodden, maybe he was once. But not anymore.

Autobiography's opening paragraph is 6 pages long. There could not be a more perfect encapsulation of the Three Tenets of Morrissey, namely:
1. Morrissey is bigger than others
2. Morrissey will not be edited
3. Morrissey is speaking and must be allowed to finish

Yeah, I think Sing Your Life is one of the better songs on the album.

Haha, I never knew that!  Wonderful stuff.

Do we acknowledge the latest cancellation or is this thread deader than Morrissey?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-68121824

QuoteThe singer Morrissey is being treated for "physical exhaustion" after cancelling two concerts in the US.
A statement posted to his Instagram account said the singer had "been ordered to rest for two weeks".
It added that the former frontman of The Smiths would remain in Zurich where he was receiving "medical supervision".
Morrissey, 64, had been due to perform in California on 26 and 27 January to mark the 20th anniversary of his album, You are the Quarry.
The album features some of Morrissey's most famous songs including First of the Gang to Die and Irish Blood, English Heart.
The venues in Anaheim and Inglewood said the concerts had been cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances".
His tour dates in February have also been cancelled, according to his website.
The singer had been due to perform in Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil next month.
The band She Wants Revenge, who were due to support Morrissey at the California shows, said they were "genuinely saddened".
They added that although they were "frustrated and deeply disappointed" they were "not terribly surprised".
"We all knew this was a possibility, we just hoped it would play out different this time", the band said.
Morrissey has previously cancelled shows due to ill health.

Love the understatement of that last sentence by the way

Looking at the reaction from hardcore fans over on Morrissey-Solo.com, this does seem like a watershed moment:

QuoteIt's over. Morrissey is done as a live act. I will never, ever travel to see him again.

QuoteI genuinely believe he thought these would be the hottest tickets in town. Though it's quite unlike him to join the nostalgia bandwagon of playing a "classic album", I think it's always been "in his back pocket" in case things really went south career wise!
I have to say that I never really liked the idea because it felt desperate and unbecoming. However, he's played that hand now and it's not worked and I'm not sure there's anything left, other than a Smiths reunion. Which, of course, will never happen.

Goldentony

quite funny he's at the arsehole of his career celebrating an album that was marked as a big legacy act comeback following a period of nobody being arsed with him at all

Ferris

"Specialist medical treatment in Switzerland" = Dignitas, surely. Especially if you've flown in to get it.

PlanktonSideburns

Flouncing directly into one of those death eggs because he didn't sell enough tickets to his gigs, classic Morissy

dontpaintyourteeth

mind when that album came out and uncut reviewed it at the same time as musicology by prince and the review basically just went "these are fine but obviously they aren't as good as anything they did in the eighties lol"

I prefer Ringleader of the Tormented

First of the Gang to Dignitas

the puns are inarguably worse than morrisseys litany of racist outbursts

He's quite a heavy boozer isn't he - wouldn't be surprised if his liver's exploded!

Common misconception. You're thinking of his former guitar player, Moz Boozer.

If he's about to die, it's a good job he forgave Jesus.

Memorex MP3

How does he get away with canceling so many shows in general? Surely someone is absolutely burning money on deposits for venues along the way?

The latest Morrissey Central update:

QuoteMorrissey has paid the exit fee to Capitol Records in order to return both WORLD PEACE IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS and BONFIRE OF TEENAGERS albums back to him.
"It's been a long, hard, bloody war. Few would make it out alive, and ... I'm no exception," he has commented.
Morrissey remains unsigned.

While I'm sorry to hear that Morrissey hasn't made it out alive, I look forward to seeing the two new albums dropping on Bandcamp very soon. Which I'm sure will definitely probably happen.

Meanwhile, to keep us tied over before then, another reissue with revised artwork from a completely different era. (If the image below doesn't work, Google 'Beethoven Was Deaf'...)

Mid set urination. The relief is palpable.

lazyhour

That's surely not an era-appropriate photo, is it?

Either way, it's dogshit.

Oosp

It's incredible that he's survived for this long with explosive kegs between his legs

poodlefaker

Why doesn't he jack it in and stay in bed all day watching Talking Pictures TV? I always assumed he loved the adulation he gets from doing gigs, but he seems to ditch them at the drop of a hat.

LordMorgan

Is morrissey rich ? As in a millionaire level of richness
