Honestly don't think we'd bat an eyelid at "My booky wook" as a title if some one we liked used it.

Quote from: The Mollusk on October 01, 2023, 01:47:28 PMAppropriate that Brand would name his book in reference to slang used by the character of an intellectually smug rapist, someone who is aware of his faults but continues to indulge his fantasies and bucks against a system trying to straighten him out. Write what you know eh.

That's far from a satisfactory overview of the book, but in any case, Nadsat-sounding terms gained some currency for being cool and that's more likely explanation for the usage.

It's a crap attempt at Nadsat, regardless who did it and personally, I always found it cringeworthy.

I wasn't saying it was a satisfactory overview - Brand is after all a total dipshit and it wouldn't surprise me if he latched onto some sort of antihero idealism in a misunderstood protagonist. In any case the association certainly isn't doing him any favours.

As mentioned a few posts before yours. I assumed she was talking about Brand as it was recorded before the story broke.

If so, I wonder if that would have been broadcast if the investigation hadn't been disclosed yet. Doubtful.

I would. It's just a shit title.

Although respect is due to the CaB poster who suggested that Peter Mayhew should have written an autobiography, just so he could call it My Wookiee Book.

Quote from: Old Nehamkin on October 01, 2023, 02:45:27 PMIt's true that the book title started out as a joke suggestion on the radio show like you've described, but Brand was already incorporating bits and pieces of that clockwork orange lingo into his schtick at least as early as Big Brother's Big Mouth (introducing VT's with "viddy this my droogs" etc.) and I think "booky wook" was very definitely an extension of that.

'Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well' being Alex's line announcing the first rape scene, of course. Brosaying it in our glazzies, the filthy prestoopnik.

Bin, then take bin charity shop

Yeah, second-hand bins are the rage right now.

No, you lob it through the window

Oh, Nobody

Always assumed it was a Simpsons reference then he started tossing Burgess around when he decided that sounded too lowbrow.

Brand supposedly explained the title was a reference to Nadsat during his appearance on HIGNFY in December 2007 (or so claims Wikipedia)

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Quote from: jamiefairlie on October 01, 2023, 03:48:50 PMHe really needed someone to just say "God, you're such a prick" in a weary old Wogan voice.

You've accidentally hit upon an interesting point. Morgan was the only person who ever made fun of Brand, the only person who ever pricked his pomposity. And that's why people enjoyed those radio shows, it's why so many listeners gave Brand the benefit of the doubt.

He's a daft sod who laughs along when his best mate takes the piss! He's self-aware, he enjoys silly old narcissistic Russ being the butt of the joke!

At the risk of sounding like an armchair psychologist, those radio shows presumably assuaged his guilty conscience.

Oooooooh. There's been some bad racism going on, and no mistake. My leige. It's made Mr Winky go right small it has. Oh yes it has. Any my ballbag. My old ballbag. Has only gone up my bum.

Well that clears that up, thanks. I always got the impression he had a chip on his shoulder over being working class, but even that may have been weaponised into a tool of manipulation.

FFS that sounds like him. The difference being I am scrabbling round for words that mean what I think, and he puts them in at random for effect

Morgan was definitely the catalyst that made Brand's shtick actually funny, rather than tedious, but Noel Gallagher used to laconically puncture his notions as well. On one occasion, when Brand was pontificating about discrimination, Mr. Gee had had enough as well.

Looks bad, doesn't it? I mean, the whole "he's a father now" thing wasn't remotely exculpatory, but this is round about when he had two kids.

Yeah, he's definitely tried to dress the whole thing in 'old' Russell's clothes. To the extent that I'm actually surprised there are recent claims. He knew he was in trouble by then.

I am totally weirded out with how disappointed I am to learn this, given everything else. Maybe everything else has bypassed my disappointment and saturated some other more severe emotion, leaving my disappointment free for this.

It's infantile.

Yes, that's the nub of the issue, as it were, when added to all the dreadful shit about his "Mr Winky" and scrotum.

Senior Baiano

Yeah, someone I like would not, by definition, use that title

I suppose you could say he was attempting to puncture the pomposity and self-important nature of autobiographies by entitling it such?

Or maybe he just wanted an autobiography (with the carefully chosen non-threatening, doe-eyed, Johnny Deppesque appearance on the book jacket) to have extra appeal for the teenage fangirls with the cutesy 'be my fwend' title?

I think we can guess which approach took preference.

TommyTurnips

I remember on the radio show as time grew closer to the booky wook coming out there was talk of meetings with the publisher where they were trying to talk him out of using that title. Even Matt by that point was saying that Russell should change it because it will affect sales because it sounds like he's not taking it seriously.
