The World Health Organisation has asked China for details about an outbreak of respiratory illnesses and reportedly undiagnosed pneumonia after local media shared footage of hospitals crowded with children.

Since mid-October, northern China has reported an increase in "influenza-like illnesses" compared with the same period in the previous three years, according to WHO.

Really annoying as my stock of tinned soup from 2020 is just reaching the best before date.

The cases currently reported by the monitoring and hospital systems in China are caused by known infectious agents, said China's National Health Commission on Fri. The commission said it has had an online video conference with the World Health Organization with experts from China's leading medical institutions to introduce the situation of China's recent spike in respiratory infectious diseases.

Press conference from the Taiwan Center for Disease Control yesterday also said this outbreak doesn't shown signs of being from anything unusual, with China attributing it to the lifting of pandemic restrictions. With Covid-19 they had early intelligence from Wuhan that it was a new pathogen.
