I saw the photo but only just read the subsequent replies.  I actually thought that he was Mike Batt.

Who would have thought 'What's Dave Hill wearing?' would eventually be Primark jeans and a puffa jacket.  He's looking hearteningly well actually.

I love the fact that Bucks Fizz are now officially going by the joke name Lucas and Walliams gave them in Rock Profiles.

Also, "The Fizz" have either got some session singer in to handle the vocal chores, or they've put Cheryl Baker's pipes through so much (autotune?) filtering she sounds like a completely different person!

How can Sweet still be a band?

Actually, what's the group opinion on what constitutes the same band? How many original members or is the classic line up more important? What if the band exists continuously but members get changed over time (like cells in the human body), is that still the same band, should they be able to use the name?

I'm biased of course but I can't look at the New Order with those two bozos on stage doing rock poses. That's not NO for me.

Quote from: jamiefairlie on September 21, 2022, 11:10:15 PMHow can Sweet still be a band?

Andy Scott would be the only original member here, as the other three are in various states of deadness. I do love that fat drummer though - he looks like old 'Turmoil' Danny Kelly without his glasses!

Some version of the band were doing yet another re-recording of their old hits ('Isolation Boulevard') quite recently, so it's nice to discover that they actually pulled their tripe out and put out an original song. And though it's sounds a bit more 1984 than 1974, I quite that chorus.

A few years ago Fairport Convention did one of those "classic album in full" tours, for Liege and Lief, which none of the line-up performed on.

The Culture Bunker

Dr Feelgood are still touring, and they haven't had an original member in the line up since Lee Brilleaux died nearly 30 years ago.

daf

I think no original members is fine so long as the non-original members were part of the group during their successful years - eg. someone like Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd - who joined on album 2, or Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie or Lindsey Buckingham with Fleetwood Mac.

Actually, there WAS a fake Fleetwood Mac touring back in 1974 - which I briefly touched on in the Toppermost thread :

QuoteWith another 26 concerts scheduled, the tour was cancelled, and the band also went back to England to break the news to their manager Clifford Davis who was left with major touring commitments to fulfil and no band. Davis was concerned that failing to complete the tour would destroy his reputation with bookers and promoters. He sent the band a letter in which he said he "hadn't slaved for years to be brought down by the whims of irresponsible musicians".

Davis claimed that he owned the name 'Fleetwood Mac' and the right to choose the band members, and he recruited members of the band Legs, which had recently issued one single under Davis's management, to tour the US in early 1974 under the name 'The New Fleetwood Mac' and perform the rescheduled dates. This band consisted of Dave Terry (aka Elmer Gantry, formerly of Velvet Opera: vocals, guitar), Kirby Gregory (formerly of Curved Air: guitar), Paul Martinez (formerly of the Downliners Sect: bass), John Wilkinson (keyboards) and Australian drummer Craig Collinge (formerly of Manfred Mann Chapter III).

The members of this group were told that Mick Fleetwood would join them after the tour had started, to validate the use of the name, and claimed that he had been involved in planning it. Davis and others stated that Fleetwood had committed himself to the project and had given instructions to hire musicians and rehearse the band. Davis said Collinge had been hired only as a temporary stand-in drummer for rehearsals and the first two gigs, and that Fleetwood had agreed to appear on the rest of the tour, but then had backed out after the tour started. Fleetwood said later that he had not promised to appear on the tour.

The 'New Fleetwood Mac' tour began on 16 January 1974 at the Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and according to one of the band members, the first concert "went down a storm". More successful gigs followed, but then word got around that this was not the real Fleetwood Mac and audiences became hostile. The band was turned away from several gigs and the next half-dozen were pulled by promoters. The band struggled on and played further dates in the face of increasing hostility and heckling, more dates were pulled, the keyboard player quit, and after a concert in Edmonton where bottles were thrown at the stage, the tour collapsed. The band dissolved and the remainder of the tour was cancelled.

The lawsuit that followed regarding who owned the rights to the name 'Fleetwood Mac' put the original Fleetwood Mac on hiatus for almost a year. Although the band was named after Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, they had apparently signed contracts in which they had forfeited the rights to the name.

Rock promoter Bill Graham wrote a letter to Warner Bros to convince them that the real Fleetwood Mac was, in fact, Fleetwood, Welch, and the McVies. This did not end the legal battle but the band was able to record as Fleetwood Mac again.

The dispute was eventually settled amicably out of court, four years later. In later years Fleetwood said that, in the end, he was grateful to Davis because the lawsuit was the reason the band moved to California.

Bob Welch : "For six months we did nothing but try to extricate ourselves from the legal mess. We moved to L.A. to renegotiate our record deal. We were running out of money, so we recorded another album."

Yeah but do we think that's kosher or a con? I think it's the latter.

I read somewhere that Brilleaux was keen for the Dr Feelgood name to carry on after he was gone, so there's some grey area there.

Of course, if you want a more authentic experience of 'Roxette', 'She Does It Right' etc, then Wilko Johnson is still around. I expect he could pull a much bigger crowd too.

Astonishingly given his diagnosis 10 years ago!

Three of the members have been around since 1983, but since their last proper hit was in 1979, I'd say that's not the "proper" Dr Feelgood anymore. I'd rank them a notch above a covers band.
