Quote from: Tiggles on June 25, 2024, 07:21:33 PMImo it's really dead good fun. It's not stand-up, but it definitely isn't a story show. It is packed - absolutely rammed - with laughs, meta, clever and funny.

It also bears repeat experiences (I've been to a few) so you could suggest to your brother-in-law that he goes again anyway, and you get tickets for another date when you can really get stuck in.

Thanks!

imitationleather

What date you going on, coop?

SO I CAN AVOID IT OBVIOUSLY LOL

LOL!!!

Saturday the 20th is theoretically the day but new information has come to light which means it be may logistically impossible for us to attend now anyway.

imitationleather

How suspiciously convenient.

DrGreggles

It's a fun and funny show, with Kitson clearly enjoying it loads.

Being apprehensive about getting involved is perfectly understandable, but you'll be in a room full of people feeling exactly the same way. Kitson creates a relaxed vibe from the start and it's more fun to be involved than not*.
And you might get a big laugh, which is a tremendous feeling.

*2nd time I saw an early version there were more punters than parts, so about 30 of us didn't get a script

mjwilson

Saw this in Bolton last night and had a grand old time. Also bumped into the big man on the train platform on the way home and had a bit of a chat.

Tiggles

Bolton #2. My sister giggled so much at her lines she could barely say them.

We kept our scripts as he said he needs to rewrite it with more highbrow references for the London run.

Tremendous fun, very funny. Quintessential Dannyman.

itf

Bit of a shame his note about sales for next week's shows. Not sure how it'd work with a smaller audience than number of parts

Tiggles

He'll just get people to double up on scripts, but it will defo lose some zing. He may - gasp! - have to allow someone to review it to raise its profile. Surely not.

I'm not sure the location of the theatre and the timing of the run to coincide with the start of the school holidays (thinking of Kitson's demographic) is helping sales, particularly at such relatively short notice.

Just back from Bolton, great fun. Very funny and meta. 'Secret comedy forums', indeed.

Which lines did your sister have?

Spoiler alert
And did the Captain Pisspot thing actually happen in Leeds? I first saw him at Hull Uni in 2003 and went pretty much anytime he played Leeds for the next few years, and I have a memory of something like that happening at one of the shows.

Anyway, highly recommmneded if you get the chance to see this.

No way! We were sat right behind you! She got lucky/unlucky with that line, depending on your point of view.

Hahaha! She actually swapped the script with someone else in our group who read the lines and completely bottled it. I was dead envious!

lauraxsynthesis

I look forward to the highbrow material. An email has gone out today promoting it from a big local comedy club where he comperes on Sundays, so that should sell some tickets. I know a few people who had already booked before I mentioned it to them.

Was there as well, best moment of the show!

Was pleased that my line got a healthy laugh

Spoiler alert
My second line starts with 'my second line'

Probably the most fun non-stand up show I've seen from Kitson, loved all the meta stuff, lots of fan service for the regulars.

Schnapple

Saw this tonight, had a grand old time and thought that he created a sublime vibe. Welcoming enough that everyone felt comfortable, but with enough space for the show to unfold with his usual overblown angst, which I sometimes miss from his 'sad' tours.

I had the final official scripted full line -

Go on, Keith!!

Did a good job with it, having battled nearly an hour of self-antagonising intrusive thoughts about fucking it up or saying something terrible, but by the time it finally rolled around, I was myself in hysterics from the Big Man's

It's brilliant. I wonder if the abilities of the Keith character makes a difference, ours was really good.

Saw Collaborator last night at the Albany, Deptford.  Great experience.

Made more memorable for me as I took my autistic son with me who knew nothing about Kitson and was initially appalled by the participatory aspect of the show - I quietly reassured him that he didn't have to join in/I would read his lines for him if need be etc.

Kitson spends about 10 mins at the beginning really putting people at their ease over the whole thing though and to my genuine surprise my boy was perfectly happy to get involved and loved the experience.  We were laughing about random lines together all the way home.  Kitson was being facetious about his role as creating magical memories that will last a lifetime but at least for these two audience members that was definitely, unironically, the case.  No hyperbowl.

Bonus chuckle for us was that just before the show started my son was concerned about "what if I need to go to the toilet once it's started?!" and his line was basically that question, which Daniel then directly answered ha!

Content and form aside (which were both excellent as others have already covered), I was left with the impression of a genuinely empathetic performer in the respect of the way that he had clearly considered and pre-empted the myriad different concerns of his audience.

Anyway 10/10 as per, looking forward to sharing the back catalogue with my son now in the coming months.  Have Tree lined up to watch on Vimeo then probably Hull Uni if I can still find it (in that order/if only to demonstrate the duality of man).

Kind of curious to see if I can find any Leeds Uni recordings to see if "that story" actually happened :D

Seeing this in a couple of weeks, got fairly negligible knowledge of Kitson save seeing him compere a Sunday mixed bill at Up the Creek a while back (which I enjoyed a lot).

Looking forward to it based on all the above posts; I'm a bit of a sucker for gimmicky interactive ephemeral type stuff anyway, so intrigued to see how this pans out.

A friend has given me the heads up that there was mention on BBC London radio this morning that Kitson is apparently about to start writing something that he'll premiere in Manchester in October. Embarrassingly enough, I cheered.

It was part of a nice little bit about the comedy scene in London and the Camden Fringe, starts at around 2h51m:

Just booked to see this at the Albany on Thursday. Working a 6am-4pm shift that day and the day after so hope I'm not too corpse-like during it.

I've already got 8 shows booked for October but what's one more. Looks like there's space at the Royal Exchange - did he mention doing something there?

Yep - in an email about Collaborator earlier this year he mentioned the Royal Exchange. And I completely agree with his assessment of it as a theatre - I think it's one of the best fits for Kitson's work there is:

QuoteJust for the avoidance of confuddlement I will just very quickly say this: I had a few emails from people last year assuming this show was going to end up at the Royal Exchange in Manchester (aka the greatest in the round theatre in the world). There are currently no plans to do that, because I do now believe this show is better in a smaller space with a lower capacity. I am talking to the Exchange about hopefully doing something else there at some point in the next 18 months or so because It's the absolute best place.

Drebin

I went last week. Very enjoyable. Still 400 tickets left according to his mailing list email he sent this morning.

lauraxsynthesis

I went last night. My favourite bit was when he made a dark reference to some audience members writing about him on online forums.

Hi, Daniel!

imitationleather

Saw this at the Albany last night. I wasn't really sure what I was expecting, but I thought it was absolutley banging. Almost everyone having a line had the effect of keeping the audience really engaged and created a great atmosphere, I thought.

Was a tad apprehensive beforehand and not sure I really wanted to go but am so very glad I did.

Msp1976

Saw this for the second time last night and had a few more lines this time. Was so good. John Kearns was in the audience.

CaledonianGonzo

Ha! He was also in when I saw it last year at Summerhall.

Tiggles

One the joys of Kitson doing it at Fringe was him saying the line about continuing to work in order to make other people professionally jealous, whilst glancing over to whatever comedian happened to be in that morning. Stewart Lee was sat behind me for one of the ones I saw, so I don't know if he acknowledged it, but the line certainly delivered bigger laughs than those times when comedians haven't been there.

DrGreggles

A semi-disguised Nish Kumar was at one of the Summerhall shows last year, and had one (complaining) line, which drew a seamless unscripted "oh fuck off Nish!" from Kitson.
