Issues with streaming/ casting from a Chromebook

Namely, streaming NowTV. It's fine until I stick the hdmi lead into the computer and then you get the pause/ff/rew icons along with the timer and Sky banner. Moving cursor doesn't change this (if the cable's plugged in). Can't Chromecast as I get a greyed out "available for specific video sites" box. My (approx 10 your old) SOny Bravia TV doesn't seem to want to let me link to my new Chromebook and says I need to use something called Miracast and I have no idea what the fuck that is. All I want to do is watch Shazam 2 :(

Any (idiot-proof) ideas?
