...but  what  won ?

I  turned   it   on  at   one  point  to  discover  that   Eric'n'Ernie   doing  Singing In The Rain  was  supposedly  only  34th  best  ever  -  and  promptly  switched the telly  off and  read  a  good  book .

So  what  did  "  they "  decide ?

There must have been an instant response thread around these parts when it first went out last year. 3 April 2005, that is. Possibly the only useful bit of information if you want to search the forum.

Bloody

hell

Shoulders?-Stomach!

It's excellent news for me as my new sketch show is a varied, eclectic affair set solely in and around a swimming pool.

Give the public what they want, that's what I've always said.

Jack Shaftoe

I wonder how many people voted for 'Angels' by Robbie Williams?

Well that's that buggered!

What bothered me more was one of the talking heads for the Mr Chomondley-Warner sketch. He was saying he knew Harry Enfield and he knew Enfield had this need to be un-PC and Mr Chomondley-Warner was a chance for him to say the things he really wanted to say on TV but couldn't.

That has to be horse shit, doesn't it? I always understood that sketch to be mocking old-fashioned opinions of women rather than mocking women themselves. Sorry to bring Gervais into this thread as well but that's why I've always defended him - because I understood his material in the same way. The question is: have I misunderstood Mr Chomondley-Warner in the same way as some VWs would have me believe I've misunderstood Gervais? Or are some people going back and reinterpreting fairly PC works in an un-PC way in order to justify an unpleasant trend in modern comedy?

Shoulders?-Stomach!

I think it's because the talking heads sometimes misinterpret the nature of the material. Anything remotely controversial is considered good by default because it's un-PC and anything un-PC (argh, that phrase is even annoying) has to be a good thing by its very nature. One of my friends likes Family Guy for some rather dubious reasons too. "They don't give a shit about offending people." Whereas if anyone understood Family Guy properly, there's no way they could be offended on grounds of racism.

It's obvious that the don't drive sketch is just a parody of the old school way of thinking, not just a wacky platform for Enfields opinions. Why would he harbour views like that and choose to present them in such a ridiculous manner?

James A

Enfield was probably just trying to tell him that he enjoyed acting the part.

I missed this first time around and enjoyed it as three hours of watching some old favourites and seeing some sketches for the first time. I watched as a collection of clips, rather than a countdown, to prevent the inevitable annoyance at the order of things. Naturally Little Britain was over-represented but that always happens with these things. I have a feeling I don't take comedy quite as 'seriously' as some on here though. I thought the talking heads were pretty good, compared to other shows of this ilk.

Bo Selecta can fuck right off though. When juxtaposed with all those classics, it looked even worse.
