About time we had a thread dedicated to this legendary bent chart!

And please welcome, your host for this evening . . .

shiftwork2

This was mentioned on Chart Music so I dutifully watched the episode with surprisingly-still-alive Gilbert O'Sullivan on it.  It's got mad boomer energy.  I also overheard someone in a cafe discussing it so Mike Read has proven it feasible.

Haha - Oops!

( I did have a quick search on Holly's twitter to double check on the phrasing, but couldn't find it - now I know why! )

Topical 2014 references to Blair and Brown there - Let it go Mike!

I've been recently enjoying The Members again after catching up with them on MRTHR. I didn't realise the singer, Nicky Tesco had died earlier this year until this week. Bummer.

Credit where credit's due, Mike Read (prior to making racist calypso) made one of the best novelty punk records of the era:

Up there with Jilted John & Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias.

Sorry if this is a daft or obvious question but how are heritage acts defined - so many years in the business?

Yes - it's tremendously vague!

I seems to be older acts that are still touring and releasing records, but wouldn't sell enough to dent the real charts - groups with a small but dedicated fanbase - Old Punks, Glam Rockers & 80's Legends. Also a smattering of newer acts that sound old (e.g.The Jive Aces) who presumably slipped Mike a silk bomber tour jacket to get on their bent voting list.

Speaking of which . . .

How the voting works is they present you with 57 tracks of their choosing on their website - and you select the ones you like (like the Chart Music vote).

QuoteChoose as many tracks as you like but you can only vote for each song once per week. If there are songs that grow on you, pop back at any time and vote for them.

The Top 30 of those then make up that weeks chart. I don't know how they choose who's on the list in the first place, and if the bottom 10 or so get relegated each week - or it's just a swirling pool of stagnant pop that you can never escape from once you're in! In the words of Toyah - It'th a Mythtery!

Here's this weeks voting form if you fancy rigging it :

Actually, having investigated further, The Jive Aces were formed in 1989, so probably qualify as bono-fido pop crocks regardless of their retro sound!

QuoteThe Jive Aces are a six-piece UK-based, swing band that was formed in 1989. They were Britain's Got Talent semi-finalists in 2012. They have released 11 albums, as well as compilations, EPs and singles and have performed at numerous music festivals, as well as on Mike Read's notoriously bent Heritage chart show.

Ho! Just got to the good bit - hold on to your hats everyone . . .

QuoteThe band is also notable for having strong links to the Church of Scientology members of the Sea Organization, and for promoting the crackpot "religion" and its missions. Some critics of the Church of Scientology claim that The Jive Aces are used as a front group for Scientology; Mike Rinder, former senior executive of the Church of Scientology International and the Sea Organization, claims that the band is used for generating "positive PR" for the church.

Truly a cult act, then.

I was looking at the tracklisting for the pilot that @daf posted above and thought that Eddy Grant deserved better...until I actually clicked on the song.  Still, over a million views, so fair play.

Getting some "Sontaran" vibes off that photo.

Poor Dave.

Is he dinky, or is Read a giant? Can't tell.
