I'd go a step beyond that, rather than trying to avoid just being on the wrong side of history, it's possibly a bit of a power play where some evangelicals are more pro-Trump than pro-Jesus at this stage. If you don't reel them back in at this stage they're gonna be hard to order them around with your veneer of being morally righteous after they've discovered the joys of direct hate.

"But they're manufactured tremendous if you're into this, tremendous fumes. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything.

"You talk about the carbon footprint, fumes are spewing into the air, right? Spewing. Whether it's in China, Germany, it's going into the air. It's our air, their air, everything, right?"

It was unclear what exactly Trump meant, or how Trump equated windmills converting clean air into energy to toxic fumes fouling the atmosphere. But he did share his thoughts on their appearance.

"You see all those [windmills]. They're all different shades of color," he said. "They're like sort of white, but one is like an orange-white. It's my favorite color, orange."

"You know what they don't tell you about windmills? After 10 years they look like hell. They start to get tired, old," he said, lamenting that owners of ageing windmills not replacing them without government subsidies was "a really terrible thing".

I think he was trying to reach the argument that when making wind turbines there is a negative carbon footprint (as there is when manufacturing just about everything).

Of course, that argument doesn't hold up as over its lifetime it'll have a much larger positive carbon impact compared to generating the same energy through coal or gas.

Mr Trump was referring to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Mr Abiy, 43, is Africa's youngest head of government.

He came into office in April 2018 after months of anti-government protests forced his predecessor to resign.

Mr Abiy has introduced massive liberalising reforms to Ethiopia, shaking up what was a tightly controlled nation.

He freed thousands of opposition activists from jail and allowed exiled dissidents to return home. He has also allowed the media to operate freely and appointed women to prominent positions.

And in October last year, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize - the only head of state to win the prize since Mr Trump was elected in 2016.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Mr Abiy was honoured for his "decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea".
