Can anyone identify an American comedy/drama series that aired in Britain (on Channel 4 I think) around the late 80s/early 90s? I don't remember much about the show, but it mainly concerned the often sex-related adventures of some middle-aged American man.

The show's main distinguising feature was its gimmick of constantly inserting clips from 1950s or 1960s-era American tv shows (and maybe films too) that related to something that had just occured in the story.

I remember that the opening sequence featured the man as a young boy in around the 1950's watching these kinds of tv shows.

Does anyone know this show's title?
