Film series where the 3rd or even 4th film, is better than the first two.

Possibly, the Michael Shayne films – it was a spin-off of a radio show about a Private eye ("that reckless, red-headed Irishman") in New Orleans. The films were fun B-pictures and the third and fourth ones are particularly good (there were 12 in total).

Star Trek 4:The Voyage Home (1986). Yes, even better than Wrath.

I always thought Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) was more enjoyable than the first two but Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994) is superior as an original piece of horror cinema.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got your back, bro. It's watchable, the tumultuous production history is fun to read about, but that's about it. I can understand *preferring* it to Aliens if you disliked the direction the latter took the series in, but struggle to imagine why anyone would prefer it to the first, and it's no great shakes as a film.

Re. Elm Street - I love Dream Warriors but the original is a fucking masterpiece. New Nightmare is another breakthrough.

Re. Apes - The climax of Conquest is the franchise's dramatic peak. Not Charlton Heston banging his fists on a beach. Yeah it's Earth, get over it mate. Didn't you see the DVD cover?

Logan is miles better than the preceding Wolverine films

I was tempted to go with the Star Trek 4 nomination, but this one is indisputable.

The Twilight movies get better as they go along, in that they are even more crappy and fun to watch.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, if it is considered a sequel to Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More.

Yes, and I would say all of the X-Men films. I think I felt about that the way a lot of people felt about Casino Royale; took something I always *kind of* liked and had some interesting elements to the next level and made a consistently good film for the first time. I can't really imagine bothering to watch any of the other X films again, except maybe the "Wolverine in Japan" one which I have a soft spot for. (I love parts of First Class, but it had some awful bits too)

The original Bourne trilogy - Ultimatum is the best one.

Also, I think the Expendables franchise has improved with each instalment as they've just ramped up the silliness.

I also think that 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' is the most fun of those particular films too.

You'd be really wrong though, if you thought that.

Someone always brings up Alien cubed in these sorts of threads. It's a mess. Filmmaking by commitee.

Superman 3 is the best of that particular bunch.

It's a prequel to the other two.

How about Death Wish 3?  It's shit, but amazing shit.

Toy Story 3?  The first two are great, of course, but 3 is working on another level entirely.

RE Star Trek - admittedly I'm not much of a fan, but I think 6 is the best one. Great film.

Speaking of Star Trek, Beyond was the best of the reboot films by some distance.

Nobody's favourite Friday the 13th movie is Friday the 13th and I don't hear Part II mentioned nearly as much as the ones that came after.  Parts IV and VI are generally regarded as the best and VI is almost a precursor to Scream in its self-aware treatment of horror tropes.  III is good for having the best soundtrack & introducing the hockey mask, V is great for being a ridiculously campy murder mystery full of cartoon characters, VII is fun for being an unofficial version of Stephen King's Carrie Vs Jason, VIII is great for Jason winning an impomptu rooftop boxing match by punching his opponent's head off straight into a bin.

Rocky 3 is the best one. And Rocky 4 is also better than the first 2.

Would echo Nightmare on elm street 3 and Halloween 3.

Halloween 3 didn't really have much at all to do with the other films other than the 31st October but it managed to be memorable for various scenes such as the gloves into eyes  and the mask = insect & snakes moments.

Nightmare on elm street 3 had a great soundtrack and I loved the idea that each character had their own power in their dreams which they were missing in their real life, even though Freddy still managed to destroy most of them. Not sure if it was better than the first two as it has been a while since I watched them but it certainly stuck with me more.

I hear the third Godfather was good /trollface

Crabwalk

It's a toss-up between Trois Couleurs Rouge and Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol for best latter sequel.

What the hell is wrong with the people choosing Alien 3 over the first two though? I know it's a game of opinions but... that one is clearly wrong.

I'm no Lord of the Rings fan, but the third one of those won Best Picture at the Oscars. Incredibly rare for a sequel.

I have a friend whose favourite movie in that series is the third one but his opinions are absolutely fucking insane.  He also thinks The Lost World is better than Jurassic Park and Jaws is a 2/5.

I never said I thought it was better than the first one.  But I DO think it's a minor masterpiece.  Aliens is just an okay action film with an abysmal script.  In my opinion.

If you can ignore Sofia Coppola, 3 IS a good film and, were it not for the fact that it's the closing chapter of a trilogy where the first two films are masterworks (i.e. if it was a stand-alone film), I think it would be considered as one of the greatest American crime movies of recent times.
