Behold! I am Pauline Quirk
I am not of your world
But fear me not
I will do you no harm
Loan me your funky acting, and I shall play with it
For nothing is good, unless you play with it
And all that is good is nasty!
Fly on, Dorian

The fees are on the website. £88 a month for primary students, £66 per month for sibling student and £44 per month for a poppets student.

Apparently this works out at £8  per hour.

QuoteOur fees are all-inclusive: there is no need to pay extra for specialist tuition, Masterclasses, Showcases, Creative Stages Reports, or Group Trinity College London Exams. We also provide your child's first PQA T-Shirt.

Just checking, it's still ok to publicly despise stage school cunts, right?

That's a hill I will die on (or let others do, while I egg them on from a place of safety)

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

If Pauline Quirks is so good at acting why has she never been in anything notable, ever?

Glebe

Have to say this never appealed to me.

I could have sworn she played Rose West in something but apparently not.

Can't blame her for being a bit of a sour puss, imagine a bunch of stage school kids making loads of shit 'She's quirky' jokes.

petril

she was in The Sculptress, about an alleged murderer

Spoiler alert
as a child of abusive parents who saw her mum murder her dad, she took the blame for years to let her go free

Pauline Quirke was in Broadchurch (never seen it) and The Bill (as Cath Wilson, a woman
Spoiler alert
wrongly convicted of murdering a child
[close]
)

petril

is she a miscarriage of justice specialist then or what?

I mean in BOAF it was the husband who was wrongly convicted, but that's close enough

Ah, that's lovely - nice tip of the hat!

Does that mean Birds of a Feather is in the Tommy Westphall universe?

HMP Slade from the tv show, or HMP Slade from the film?

How does Porridge get into that?

That's really what I'm wondering here. A very enclosed environment, not much opportunity for crossover. Might be an outlier.

As a schoolboy I do remember fancying Linda Robson, which seems incredible now and just proves the benefits of being cast next to Pauline Quirke.

I watched all of the Birds of a Featherses - at least, it felt like it- as my mum was a fan. She never laughed at it though, just enjoyed it in a soap operaish way.

I spent hours desperately trying to persuade myself I fancied Linda Robson, but I never quite managed it. Bear in mind that people i fancied at this time included Delia Smith, both of Mel and Sue, etc.

Re: Fancying Robson, I think the lack of options TV channel wise and you cant possibly tug over either Quirke or Joseph meant she was more fancied simply by being the best of a bad bunch.

Yet I used to fancy the likes of Sally Gunnell and Irina Privalova, and there were much better options available at any given live athletics meet being broadcast on BBC2, so maybe I do just have some weird tastes.

Frank Skinner was obsessed with shoeless South African middle distancer Zola Budd, which even I think is too far.

Quirke played a whore in Elephant Man, and nobody who has worked with David Lynch can be that bad. She was also briefly in Distant Voices, Still Lives. She's not really a bad actress, it's just that she was never going to be the romantic lead, hence a career as murder victims, criminals, and sour-faced petty authority figures.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

I think her head is too wide to be a lead. It's wider than it is tall.

Quote from: Enzo on April 07, 2022, 09:39:55 PMI was always amazed at the photo effects in the opening credits until I found out that Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson were childhood friends. Then I wondered if they cast the show on the basis of the photos

Actually your amazement is justified as most of the photos were edited together as they weren't friends until they were older children and even then they didn't have head shots of them together.  One of the photos isn't even them, but instead the two girls that appear in the cine-film in the end credits.  The wedding photos were taken especially for the title sequence.

Michael 'Boon' Elphick in that too, of course!

And on the subject of 'Stars of UK TV in David Lynch Films', yes, it's time once again folks to wheel out Guy 'Lt. Gruber' Siner in Lost Highway!

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

I just watched an episode on YouTube and oh god it's so dated

something about the setup - punchline - canned laughter

it's like a parody of comedy

My favourite Guy Siner appearance is him as a proto-Dalek in Dr. Who. He has a full head of hair and is a child

WADDLE EYE DOO is the most depressing music that humanity has ever conjured. Makes Penderecki's 'Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima' sound like Kool and the Gang.

I'm very unnerved by the sudden realisation that there's a Pokémon called Waddle Doo who is basically just an Eye

based on the theme music alone, the series could easily have been about Sharon and Tracy being in prison

This statement is false.

BOAF did, however, manage to capture a sense of ennui for 23 year old me that no other sitcom has ever managed - not even the boring Sunday evening ones like As Time Goes By - I just found those dull.

I stand by Joseph as a difficult wank, it wasn't for the want of trying. I was possibly being a bit ageist but sure Honor Blackman did the job at one point.

The sense of foreboding watching this shite on a Sunday night as a last hurrah for the weekend before school the next day was among the worst injustices of my youth.
