Title: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: DocDaneeka on March 27, 2020, 04:33:40 PM
I know there are some fans of Simon Hanselman's Megg & Mogg here, and he's posting a comic a day on his Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/simon.hanselmann/) at the moment.

My favourite vid' related art I've seen.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Megg, Mogg and Owl

Megg Mogg and Owl is amazing. Utterly reprehensible arseholes without redemption constantly shitting on each other in the bleakest, meanest ways possible. I love it.

Thanks to your avatar you now are Owl to me.

Just bought Megahex and In Amsterdam, even though I'm pretty sure I've read in Amsterdam before.

Just bought Megahex and In Amsterdamn, even though I'm pretty sure I've read in Amsterdamn before.

The comic book "in Amsterdam" has more than just that story in it. Was just re-reading it yesterday, and I love the stories about Werewolf Jones's Felt Hat Etsy business.

Never really got into this before as I always found it a bit too squalid and depressing, but I'm really enjoying the coronavirus shenanigans. I think the tone of constant frenetic chaos stops it from feeling too heavy. And I love Jones' shitty little redpilled kids.

I debating whether to order the physical books or buy the eBook version (already got In Amsterdam, want the others). On the one hand, I want more Megg and Mogg and Owl now, on the other it's way more satisfying to sift through a physical book.

What clinched it for me is the massive sums Fantagraphics ask for shipping, but then, I have no problem with e-comics, I bought a nice big tablet with which to pour them down my gullet.

Thanks, but it's still not doing anything for me. I think I just hate Megg and Mogg. I like Owl, and Werewolf Jones as his antagonist, but Megg and Mogg do nothing for me other than as supporting characters to the Owl/Jones shitshow.

because his mom just died and he just fucked a man up the ass to assuage the grief
and uh, it seems to have worked.

I love his attention to detail to each actor in every frame. it's like giotto. but with more bumming
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine

Found the existence of Japanese doujinshi[1] of Megg & Mogg and Owl, Megasex:

It's more amusing in idea than execution. And strangely there's not much sex in it either, apart from Werewolf Jones raping Owl. Still it's interesting to see something like this actually exists.
 1. self published work, frequently pornographic

The art direction in this comic is excellent. It's all so well composed - the simplicity, the use of colour, I find it all so impressive to take in. I'm very pleased with every panel, and it's delightfully bleak. Plus it's really fucking funny.

Megg's mum's legs look like my grandma's legs in the last decade of her life. I don't think she (or her nokia) phone have so long left.

I wonder when Megg's Coven is going to be released.

Consistently makes me laugh that, because of the scale, Mogg is always there in slightly less detail because of his size.

The "only 2 pregnancy tests per customer" restriction made me laugh.

This is so consistently brilliant. Even with some degree of forward planning it takes a great deal of writing chops to keep a story as fresh, funny, dark, sad and compelling as this, let alone condensing it perfectly to a strict ten panels and publishing a fresh one every day. Very impressive.

Love this - would never have normally grabbed my interest but ive now smashed though every comic that's digitally available in a day. Cheers!

Are there any similar authors I should check out? I know absolutely nothing of comics or graphic novels.

I think the order is Megahex, Megg & Mogg in Amsterdam, One More Year, Bad Gateway

Noticed online there's plenty of other previously published comics referenced that don't seem purchasable either digitally or via a physical copy. For instance; Werewolves Jones & Sons.

Is this intentional like how musicians will do limited vinyl presses? It's a shame as I'm really keen to pay for anything else in the collection.

My favourite panel is when Jones is locked in the bathroom with the kids in the car and the gang think he's OD'd, in reality he's just so supremely high he's not able to move before jumping up and sauntering off.

Also I back whoever stated Owl is a bad person, guys a snake with a false sense of superiority.

I'm after reading all four books now and found Bad Gateway surprisingly moving. Can't wait for Seeds and Stems.

I feel like Owl is his own worst enemy and should have moved out of that pit of horrible long ago. Like dude you can hold down a job, why are you hanging out with these druggies? Just because you knew them in high school? You know you have work, why are you doing ketamine at 6am?

If Owl was a pure and good soul it wouldn't be funny though. They're all low-key horrible so it's okay to laugh at their misfortunes. Except for Jaxon in the quarantine storyline. Sweet baby Jaxon.

Little glimpse of the Big Train DVD in Simon's Instagram story today. I wondered whether that was a way to big up Arthur Matthews and give two finger up to Glinner until I realised that Glinner also wrote it, per this amusing edit on Wikipedia:

Quote
Big Train is a surreal British television comedy sketch show created by Arthur Mathews and Twitter-user Graham Linehan

Also just occurred to me that Linehan's little cough when he was being interviewed by WWJ was probably Hanselmann slyly giving him Covid-19.

Preordered it just now!

Description of Seeds and Stems:
Quote from: Amazon
In 2016, Hanselmann began producing Xeroxed zines starring the depressive Megg (a green-skinned witch), her abusive boyfriend Mogg (an actual cat), their submissive roommate Owl (a vaguely humanoid owl), and the self-destructively hedonistic Werewolf Jones (half human, half wolf) in print runs of 300 to 500 copies, with hand-painted covers, custom stamps and hologram security stickers. Seeds and Stems collects all of these out-of-print, self-published stories produced by the artist between 2016-2019, along with a generous smattering of rarities from various anthologies and magazines.

Maybe I just need to let it settle more in my mind.

I've quickly come to realise with this lockdown series that even if a certain plot point will seem predictable or "too far", it will reveal itself to be vitally instrumental in some great development a few days or a week down the line. I noted this when Jaxon tried to kill himself, which was bleak enough in itself but didn't spark much shock within me ... until this week when you understand exactly why he tried to do it.

I'm fucking loving this, still. There's a final panel in one from this week where after all the horror of Dracula Junior slicing up WWJ there's a horrified Owl lying on the floor live-streaming the whole thing. Fucking horrendous and so funny.

I also found it fantastic that in yesterday's strip, as Dracula Junior was about to slice WWJ's dick off, he was rock hard, as opposed to the strip the day before where it was limp and flaccid. This is also similar of Jaxon, as when he'd tied up in the house by Dracula Junior and Woody, he suddenly gets a boner lying panicked on the floor. Danger boner, like father like son. It's those little character details that really make this strip sing.

I would guess it is on account of in "the present" of the comics, Owl has moved out. Meg is also 29 in Bad Gateway but was a teenager in the 90s which doesn't work if she's 29 in 2020, which would seem to suggest that the quarantine storyline would have to be set after Bad Gateway in order to be canon and not an AU or an imaginary story.

Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: Consignia on May 29, 2020, 11:23:37 PM
I wouldn't say there's an ongoing story as such. I've not read Megahex[1], but I believe it ends on a cliff hanger (Owl moving out), and it's not picked up again until Bad Gateway, with all the intervening comics ignoring it. I guess there's going to be a conclusion to Bad Gateway's story at some point, but the next book is going back to odds and sods (can anyone correct me on this?).
 1. I've read the other 3 books

I disagree that the intervening comics ignore the ending of Megahex - there are continuity notes in Megg and Mogg in Amsterdam and One More Year that state the strips take place during Megahex or before the end of Megahex. The next book, Seeds and Stems, looks to be a collection of Hanselmann's self-published limited-run stuff that hasn't been collected before and I presume most of those strips will be set before Owl moves out.

Since I started following the comics on Instagram and binge-read all the books, I googled the author and in a couple of recent-ish interviews he mentions a future book entitled "Megg's Coven". He intends it to be the story of Megg confronting why she is the way she is and maybe getting clean and getting her life back on track and it's gonna be suuuuper long and all new.
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: Phil_A on May 29, 2020, 11:54:03 PM
He has tinkered with the continuity before, e.g. originally Werewolf Jones was killed off in a flash-forward strip set in 2017, but this has since become non-canon (Jones is still planned to die in different circumstances, but the date's been pushed forward to an uncertain point in the future).
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine

I mean even this current run is kinda lax with narrative consistency. In that the redemption of Werewolf Jones was almost certainly a retcon from Hanselmann writing himself into a corner with what a despicable cunt he was, but regardless it's a satisfying arc. still think genuinely this one of the most wonderful creative processes I've witnessed. anyway new one up 20 min ago

Nah, WWJ looking a complete cunt and Owl having the moral high ground over him, only for some revelation to come out that only makes him a partial cunt and for everyone to turn on Owl is a recurring theme. Not that that is exactly what has happened here, but I was expecting some sort of "redemption" for WWJ.
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse on May 30, 2020, 03:44:39 PM
I get the feeling that if WWJ could get clean and stay clean he'd be a good dad. Warehouse Jones is a decent guy, I feel. But then the fact that he's a werewolf suggests there's an inevitability to his drug use, like he'll always relapse just like the full moon always comes around.

Also I wonder if Jaxon and Diesel turn human if/when they're not constantly fed sugar cereal doused in energy drink. Like does Susan feed them properly or is she just as depraved as WWJ?
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: Mister Six on May 30, 2020, 07:53:54 PM
Jaxon would have turned back by now under Owl's care in that case, wouldn't he?

Actually other than Owl flying, do any of them have "powers"? Aren't they just regular people, functionally speaking?

Pretty sure he replied to one of the early comments on instagram and said that this was an out-of-continuity story featuring the "classic" sitcom versions of the characters (wacky drug adventures with Owl still living with them, not the grimmer depressing versions seen in Bad Gateway).

One of the things I've always liked about MM&O is that there's a "core" story with them (that Hanselmann's had planned out for years - Bad Gateway first appeared as a couple of short peces titled Meggs Coven for an Australian comics magazine eight or so years ago) but then he's happy to use them to do all kinds of other stuff when the mood takes him. I'm pretty sure the "real" MM&O didn't meet Stan Lee: https://truthzonefan.tumblr.com/image/38447675138

I don't think WWJ thinks that far ahead. But also, I think he loves his kids, just in an abstract, almost forgetful way. Like, not enough to stop drugging and feed them vegetables, or at least to let Susan have them all the time till he sorts himself out (unless she's as messed up as he is). I think "His... his poppity corn... ;_;" was genuine, as was "What'll they do without their papadoodle?" in Megg and Mogg in Amsterdam. He just can't be stable for them. Drugs are more important.

Wow that has its own deep sadness as a reason
I bought all four collected books on Kindle because stupid high shitbags doing outrageous things is totally my humour and now I'm doing fucking literary analysis on the characters

is Jones' werewolfism and the fact that he turns human when sober a metaphor for how he can never get truly clean, he will always relapse just as the full moon will always come around

Megg is a witch that never does any spells -> does this signify the wasted potential of being in a drug bubble?

does Owl stick around as long as he does because part of him is self-destructive and being around the two irresponsible drug addicts means he can blame his own self-indulgence on "peer pressure"

ETC ETC ETC AAAAARRRRGGGHHH

Lovely stuff. (Didn't know he was bald, despite the Verbwhore style hat to cover it)

Been rereading the books from the start. Forgotten a lot of it, so it feels a bit like reading them again for the first time. Great!

That time they tried to rape Owl, though. Oof

What screaming white woman with a DEFUND THE POLICE and terrified child in tow - is that a criticism of those calls by Hanselmann there? I assumed he would be on board with that sort of thing. I noticed that all the protesters were white, too, but I didn't know if that was just him ultra careful about not painting black people in a negative light right now.

I think Megg Mogg and Owl live in a neighborhood filled with terrible people who would totally use protests as an excuse to go looting. WWJ would be doing it if he wasn't sort of looking for Jaxon.

?  30 Rock? Community? (Ken Jeong in dark elf makeup, I guess?) Fawlty Towers? Peep Show?
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: Mister Six on July 01, 2020, 02:46:52 PM
30 Rock upset some woke people by having Matt Damon, him from Mad Men and one of Liz Lemon's other boyfriends pretending to be black women (just doing voices and mannerisms) in a credits bit. Can't remember the justification. Liz had taken some weird sleeping tablets and they messed with her perception or something?

Peep Show has Jez in blackface in the second series (I think), when Nancy is making him "break taboos", although he expresses clear discomfort with it.

Community's D&D episode just got taken down off streaming sites exactly because of Ken Jeong in dark elf makeup. Again, it was pointed out as dodgy in the episode.

Fawlty Towers I don't know. Manuel? Has Simon been in the US long enough to equate Spanish people with Latino people?

No new episode today. He says he's plotting out the next ones to "pull all the threads together neatly" - dunno if that means he's wrapping up the storyline, or just getting all the characters back together.

It's interesting that Mogg's got a job when as of "Bad Gateway" he couldn't even get hired at a cat café. I know this comic is non-canon and all but I wonder if Megg and Mogg are just that bad for each other that they stay in this drug-hole scamming welfare, and now that Mogg's away from Megg that's what's pushed him into finally earning money.
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: 13 schoolyards on July 02, 2020, 07:23:31 AM
I see it more as a sign of just how bad things have gotten in Covid America - everything is so shitty now that if he doesn't get a job and start earning he's dead. After all, Megg is now in some armed lawless anarcho-commune and WWJ leads the gun-toting Sodomy Squad

The last panel is one of brilliant reaction faces the author is so good at, I'd love to post here, but it's such a brilliant payoff to the rest of the comic, it would so ruin the gag.

I was finding the Sodomy Squad stuff a bit of a chore but fuck me the Mogg storyline is fantastic.

That last panel with the bonfire was great.

Was a bit concerned about where the "woman's moustache" line was going as I could see it veering into Glinner territory. I know Simon's a cross-dresser, but I don't know how he views some of the genderqueer stuff. I dunno, felt a bit awkward.

Very concerned that Ian is dead and Hanselmann is pulling what I will now call "a reverse Jennifer".

A reverse Jennifer?

The wizard formerly known as Mike (now Jennifer) was seen lying prone in a bunch of panels before the rest of the crew realised he was "dead". Only he wasn't (probably a drug or Covid coma). I think Simon's doing the same thing with Ian, except this time Ian actually is dead (or he'll follow the rule of threes and have Ian come back then kill the next character in this way).

I wasn't much of a fan early on but I think the last two issues of No Visitors were really strong. Not sure whether he'll be able to get back to that level again but fingers crossed.

Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine

I think he means Simon prefers old-school trans (with prescriptive, traditional views of appropriate gender appearance/behaviour) to new-school genderqueer and genderfluid kids[1] who mix and match gender signifiers without (in Simon's eyes, I'm guessing) any consistent logic.

I do find myself wondering what Simon's politics are, although it hard to tell what's him and what's just the Always Sunny-esque shittiness of the characters and their world.

EDIT: Although thinking about it, Hanselmann is a cross-dresser, which (as Grayson Perry has pointed out) kind of requires a gender binary to work. Making cross-dressers the natural enemy of genderqueer people and vice-versa (I actually got into an argument with a genderqueer person the other day on Facebook, because they were claiming that cross-dressing was some sad artefact of the bad old days that doesn't exist any more. And also because I'm an idiot).
 1.  Although not THAT new-school as I remember Something Awful ripping the piss out of them about 20 years ago.

Jennifer/Mike was just being a bit of cunt in last night's panels, I can't see any reason to use it to draw conclusions about Simon's views on the subject.

I thought booger's initial reaction to Jennifer keeping her moustache was clearly critical (by the author) of aversion to masculine presentation of transwomen. booger isn't a perfect person, she hoards thongs. not that there's anything wrong with hoarding thongs.
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse on August 14, 2020, 11:27:24 PM
Booger also wears a wig to hide male-patterned baldness so I'm inclined to believe what she said about being old-school trans.

Jennifer is still a baby-tran and not on hormones yet, I can give her a break atm.

With things now seemingly leading up to a big funeral and Seeds & Stems now in stores, I'm wondering if Hanselmann is looking towards wrapping it all up? It seems increasingly clear that Covid19 isn't going to "be over" in any definite way any time soon, so there's not going to be a clear moment when external events will provide a natural ending.

Presumably Mogg has to come back.

Actually that's probably how he will end it. They'll have a big funeral (and Jaxon will get abuse for somehow fucking things up), it'll be the climax of their Netflix show, and there'll be this moment of "that's the end" and then Mogg will turn up and he and Megg will have uncomfortable silence followed by "Uhm..." "So..."

EDIT: and then a painting of characters, maybe a "family portrait" in which Jaxon looks deeply unhappy while his dads and sister(s) smile, or Megg and Mogg facing off/sitting on the couch.

I don't feel like he expresses a preference at all.  Jennifer not wanting to help out with the Wolf baby isn't a comment on genderfluidity, it's a joke at the expense of Jennifer/Mike being lazy and uncommitted that was there before she decided to transition.

Perhaps Booger is supposed to represent Simon's view of being trans, but I don't think (don't know the pronouns for the author) it's presented in a didactic way.

Else Booger wouldn't have had a big hilarious piss in the street.

Eh, not necessarily. From reading the Werewolf Jones and Sons strips collected in Seeds and Stems, Jaxon is the scapegoat while Diesel/Desi is the golden child. The one time WWJ is proud of him (for impregnating half a dozen of his female classmates), he takes him to Mike for a vasectomy, which apparently turns into organ harvesting, and then leaves him in a bathtub of ice in a scummy basement while he goes to a strip club. WWJ will always be a neglectful/abusive father who occasionally showers affection on one child.

I am so glad I went and read all the books and bought Seeds and Stems. Even though this isn't canon, it's kinda tying in with the glimpses of Future Jaxon collected in S & S.

I had held out hope that Susan was somewhat normal (apart from continuing a relationship with WWJ, as evidenced by Vejonica's existence) but now that she's been revealed as a violent junkie I feel sorry for all the kids. Even Diesel/Desi. Leaning into his status as Daddy's Golden Boy is the only way he can grab any kind of normalcy for himself, and if that means turning on Scapegoat Jaxon then that's what he'll do.

The whole strip has been about recent political events. That's basically its entire remit.

Oh come on, if you're reading that comic you can't take that on face value...can you?

I think the criticism is fair: the depiction of the protesters as venal, self-absorbed twats more interested in political grandstanding and puritanical harassment than political change is there. The comments made legitimate criticisms of how he seemed to be portraying a movement that, at its heart is basically about stopping black people from being murdered en masse with impunity.

The swift disavowal by WWJ in the next day's strip clarified that, though. Whether it will satisfy the critics, I don't know.

Hanselmann seems to be caught between a rock and a hard place, I guess. Given the way this Instagram strip has evolved, it's only right that he should bundle in more of the big current events that are shaking up the world around him, but then his style as an artist is very much swayed towards "look at these cunts". Personally I don't blame him for depicting (a small cluster of) the protesters as such and I'm receptive enough to comedic ambiguity/irony to acknowledge that those probably aren't his real thoughts on the whole movement, but I can understand that there are people more politically charged up than I am who have reason enough to be offended by that depiction.

Gotta ask what's Simon's real feelings on this? There's been a lot jabbing at something approaching a genuine political revolution and I don't really know who he thinks his audience is making crass low-hanging-fruit jokes like that.

All Hanselmann's characters are horrible people, none more so than WWJ and his gang of hangers-on (It's not like Dracula Jr has been held up as a symbol of virtue either). They've all been fairly consistent in throwing around current slogans and catchphrases while not giving much of a shit about what lies behind them, which doesn't to me read like Hanselmann himself is attacking their real-world meaning or values - the joke (or "joke") here being little more than it was an easy segue into WWJ's cruel and hurtful reference to Dracula Jr Jr's shit name.

I think he tends to use Megg as his outlet for (something closer to) his real feelings on these issues, and she's been noticeably quiet for a fair while now.

^ I’m inclined to agree, but ... I dunno. I tried to address this as succinctly as possible in a post up near the top of this page, and I still stand by what I said, but it is awkward and it’s not the easiest thing to defend.

I get where you're coming from but it’s fair to say that it’s a bit more of a prickly subject due to it being a very current event. I can watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and laugh at all the reprehensible rapey and homophobic things those characters come out with because of the shock factor and knowing they’re the worst people in the world and they often suffer for it. I can appreciate the same stuff coming from MM&O as well but wouldn’t you agree that some of this stuff is a bit “too soon”?

Sorry this post might be even more rambly than usual I have just woken up

I agree, that is a smoothbrained response. Let me offer a more crinkly-brained one.

I didn't know that "Say their name" was a BLM chant/slogan until you said it. I went back and re-read today's strip with that in mind. And... I don't think it's a joke at BLM's expense.

Look at what Dracula Jr's doing by yelling "Say his name!" He's comparing his son to victims of police brutality. And he's wrong. All the people BLM want remembered were, by and large, innocently minding their own business. Some of them may have committed some minor infraction of the law. Then suddenly, power-tripping police, and the next thing they're dead. Over nothing.

Now, why is Dracula Junior Jr dead? He's dead because his father brought him to a drug house and let him play Hotel in a firetrap built by a couple of kids. He's dead because his father didn't stay at home with him playing PS4 like a responsible parent. Drugging and fucking were more important and he couldn't put it off for one day. Go back a few days to his speech at the funeral. Drac Junior barely takes responsibility for his son's death. The extent of his responsibility, in his mind, is "I should've been there more, I should've been watching him" and it's taken off with "I'm an addict" (implying, "I can't help it"). It's his "bitch ex's" fault. It's WWJ's fault. It's addiction's fault.

I don't think you're meant to take Dracula Junior and project him onto the BLM movement or even onto the relatives of victims of police brutality. I think you're meant to see this as someone arrogantly trying to claim a status that he's not entitled to.

I do think Hanselmann is walking a fine line here, in that his depiction of the protests can be read in multiple ways. He hasn't shown a single black protester - they've all been sunburnt white people. The hippies in the autonomous zone were dirty/smelly but ultimately well-meaning. He's had WWJ break the fourth wall and specifically mention anarchists and douchebags co-opting a "very valid movement". Now, by depicting the protests as white people fucking shit up, it can be read that he's saying the protests are just white people fucking shit up and nothing else. Certainly that's what the billionaire-owned media outlets and alt-right "news" sites would have us all believe. But "we don't need white people using our movement as an excuse to engage in violent behaviour" is something that's been said by people from black communities. And I do think there's room to criticise white people either cynically using the injustice suffered by non-white people as a cover for fucking shit up, or treating the protests as WOO YEAH FIGHT THE POWAH BIG DAY OUT without understanding what's really at stake here.

Ultimately there's only so much an author can do to ensure that their audience reads the text the right way, without descending into hand-holding. And maybe Hanselmann should've simply not made any commentary on the protests. That's also a valid view.

Good post.

I agree that he's walking a thin line, and I'm sort of leaning towards thinking that, because of the speed at which this strip has been constantly moving for months now and how much of a strain that must realistically put on its sole creator, the whole thing is just a bit of a chaotic mess. This is fine, and it has held together extremely well for the most part because the characters are all chaotic and messy, but when you're moving at that pace and then trying to incorporate a movement as vital and current as BLM into your comic strip of ceaseless asshole behaviour, at some point you're going to cross a line with a joke that was probably only intended to be wildly convoluted and dumb.

I'm really sorry if I'm not reading this correctly, but we were sincerely just pissing about with the previous posts. I think it's extremely clear from my previous lengthy analytical comments in this thread that I'm trying to analyse this stuff as rationally as possible through the eyes of someone quite desensitised to brutal, unapologetically ironic and weird comedy.

After the total bullshit in the n-word thread in Oscillations I don't think I could come across any more open and honest than I am now. I hope this makes sense.

Kind of having a weird drunk freakout now about whether or not people on this forum think I'm legitimate or not. I don't want that to be the case. This isn't pandering or trolling. Goblin since you were involved in that thread I hope you can see my point here.

Ugh. I wish I wasn't in this position, and I'm sorry if this has caused any upset whatsoever.

Neither of us has fucked up. I am fully on board with your previous post, I was just trying to give an objective "maybe this weird logic is what the artist is doing but I dunno if I'm into that" comment. But I appreciate if that sounded smug or deliberately contrarian. It's just my sense of humour.

I hate making responses like this on this forum, where I'm like "glad we're on the same page and you're a great poster", because I'm hella apprehensive about this place feeling too cliquey. But, that is my opinion, you are great, and thanks for putting my mind at ease before I go to bed.

I'd say this stretch is the first time it's really felt like Hanselmann is seeing this whole run as something that's going to be collected into one book. It's the kind of pacing shift you need in a collection, but feels a bit drawn-out going day-by-day

True, the funeral as a whole would scan much better if it were sprawled out across several large pages, and is not really suited to the format of scrolling through ten panels on a small screen in daily instalments. If Hanselmann really is considering publishing this as a physical thing and this arc leading up to the election is bringing the whole thing to a close, then in book form the funeral debale would probably serve as a decent OTT climactic finale piece.

Do you think people getting in a flap about this strip as they do occasionally might be amplified by it being serialised?

The guy's obviously not one of those freeze peach fuckheads, and all his comics are about characters with very few if any redeeming features, just feels like a lot of people not getting it.

Love how the fez is just balanced on top of Desi's ears.

Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: 13 schoolyards on October 19, 2020, 05:14:24 AM
The last couple have really been on fire with the twists. That one reaction shot of WWJ today was gold.

And yeah, I think this being serialised - and especially with people obviously dipping in and out, or stumbling across it midway through - really contributes to the "outrage".

That said, there's been a few half-hearted efforts over the last few years to #cancel Hanselmann on twitter for various edgy reasons but they never really seem to take. I suspect the combination of him being clearly well-meaning and not a fuckhead in person plus the fact his sense of humour is not American gives him a bit of leeway among people who're paying attention.

Find myself getting exhausted by the lack of momentum this often has. Maybe I don't vibe with serialised comics etc, but with the recent one I was SO relieved that the focus was coming off Jones for one second then BAM Mogg's back in the cage and back to Jones.

TOO much Jones really.
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine

Worth it for compounding Mogg being useless.

Was reading back through it and came across "Papa Bareback's Budget Piss-Sticks".

Howled.

It is a bit of a shame that it's turned into a mostly WWJ comic when it had much more of an ensemble going on early on.  Shame that Desi and Jaxon aren't getting that much.

I suppose in a serialised comic Jones is a lot easier to do a lot of different  stuff with; whereas I imagine Megg, Mogg and Owl take a bit more consideration?
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse on October 19, 2020, 08:05:42 PM
I mean, WWJ is the most unpredictable character. He'd do anything. Megg and Mogg would just sit there doing drugs and then bicker with each other when they ran out of drugs. While Owl vainly tried to get them to do something before ultimately joining them in doing drugs because that's what he really wants, someone to enable his own bad habits.
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: 13 schoolyards on October 20, 2020, 04:54:46 AM
I suspect as well it's partly to do with the fact that Megg is a more "serious" character - it seems like she'll be the focus of Hanselmann's work moving forward, whereas WWJ is just a dick-around comedy character who's going to (spoiler) die before his time anyway.

WWJ is a character he can totally trash here because he's got no future and zany adventures are his thing.

Oh, first time I've seen human WWJ. Whatever next?
He appears briefly at the end of One More Year and for a bit longer in Bad Gateway. Happens whenever he's completely sober. I wonder why it doesn't happen with Jaxon and Diesel/Desi and Vejonica.

Then again it seems Susan is a druggie too so the poor kids are probably never not suffering from a contact high, too much sugar and energy drink, or both.

Another theory in the comments of the latest strip is that the kids are permanent werewolves as an allegory for being born drug-addicted. Older/Adult Jaxon has appeared a handful of times in strips and is still a werewolf despite apparently having his life together, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Read Bad Gateway, it's incredible.

You also see his (human) severed head in the very early "WOTW" alien invasion 'zine / dream sequence that's in Seeds and Stems, though nobody actually says "that's WWJ's head". Hanselmann must have had Jones' human side figured out very early on.

Does anyone know at what point in the history of the strip Hanselman confirmed that Megg & Mogg live in America? Before the Insta comic, I'd always assumed they lived in Melbourne (does Hanselman himself live in the States now? I dunno where to get the goss on this stuff.) Feels like a bit of a waste to have an Aussie talent showing almost a cultural cringe when setting his work, when i think Australia is a far better fit for stoned suburban dolescum like M & M.

Has WWJ never been arrested before?

He ends up in jail (and sobers up / transforms back) at the end of the Worst Behaviour one-shot. Which I think he later coloured and reprinted in one of his books?

I think MM&O have always just lived in a vague suburban wasteland that has never been identified as any one location. The earlier stuff definitely felt like Melbourne - the 7/11 they used to visit was clearly the one across the road from Hanselmann's flat (I went there once to pick up a book I bought from him online) (clang) - whereas now that he lives in Seattle the locations feel a lot more USA-ish. I agree Melbourne feels a much more natural home for their shabby antics, but as supposedly a lot of WWJ's stunts and personality come from people Hanselmann knew in Tasmania I guess they've been transplants for a while now.

Made me laugh a lot, but that's a dated reference. I guess there's not much to mine from the news like there has been earlier in the year (see also: doing a Tiger King parody ages after that was The Big Thing). Hopefully the second American Civil War tentatively scheduled for November 7 will provide some good material.

Wonder if he wishes he'd pulled the trigger on the #WWJ2020 bid earlier in the year? That seems like something he could have had fun with. Although maybe that's getting too "big".

Amsterdam is funnier with loads of standalone comics, but Bad Gateway is more bleak single story focused. It's what you want out of Megg and Mogg really, both are good it's just how you want to tackle them. If you want to follow up Megahex, Bad Gateway is the direct sequel.

Get Amsterdam first, it takes place before Owl moves out at the end of Megahex. Bad Gateway advances the "story arc" such as it is, showing how Megg and Mogg are(n't) coping in the absence of their more capable, employed roommate.

Post by: gout_pony on November 14, 2020, 02:07:51 PM
I'm not sure if it was intended to be a funny one? It is something of a tonal issue with his work, though it also provides the frisson, I suppose. It did remind me of that regrettable 'Mark gets raped' episode of Peep Show (a series I known Hanselmann's a fan of).
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: GoblinAhFuckScary on November 14, 2020, 02:18:25 PM
What is the particular justification for including a sudden rape side-plot? Regarding it not intending to be funny, I think we all know that prison-rape in mens prisons is a tired and weary comedy trope. If there's supposed to be genuine pathos involved I think it's at best extremely misguided to shift from funny owl and cat having a toss-up to this.

Even at the best of times it's a topic that should be touched on only with extraordinary care and sensitivity. For my part, I think the vast majority of depictions are extremely exploitative and unnecessary.

Yeah I know all of Megg and Mogg is a bit rum and that's part of it, but it just kind of feels like the South Park defence where their fans waive away any crit. Ya know "they make fun of everyone so it's ok" kinda thing?
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: Pink Gregory on November 14, 2020, 04:40:18 PM
Obviously it is a nasty trope; but I think Jones kind of being more concerned about the election is funny, but the last few panels...bit misjudged.

Again I think this is something that one might be able to take a little easier if it wasn't serialised, but even in a shitty-people-doing-shitty-things comic the tone's more than a bit off suddenly.

The humour is supposed to come from WWJ's blasé attitude to getting pimped out.

The line about "Block C black supremacists" got a big laugh out of me. I like surprise mirrored dialogue. But I can understand why this strip would be uncomfortable for many.

That's fair. In terms of tonal shifts, Hanselmann's done it previously with Megg's mother recounting her rape, but that was more clearly not intended to be humerous.

When Hanselmann's work first started getting attention he was a bit ahead of the curve in that he was doing comedy about nasty stuff where he treated his characters with compassion as messed up individuals rather than just "shock" sitcom comedy monsters. I suspect that's where a lot of his fans goodwill comes from regarding this kind of material - he's seen as a safe pair of hands who (usually) doesn't do it without showing consequences. On the whole, he knows the moral weight his characters actions have.

That said, that was a good half decade ago - comedy has caught up to the idea of treating characters with respect but has increasingly #cancelled doing cringey or triggering material. I suspect in a lot of ways Crisis Zone is a last hurrah for this kind of material from him, in that Bad Gateway was definitely taking things in a new direction before Covid hit.

MM&O, according to Hanselmann, is based on his and his friends' experiences in the drug and noise music scene of Tasmania. His own mother dealt drugs during his childhood and he's talked in interviews about Megg being based on him/the character he most identifies with. Obviously he's out of that now, so it's not surprising that he's building up to Megg finally confronting her past and why she is the way she is (as teased at the end of Bad Gateway).

Desi saying "yes please" after a few hours of being treated like a normal child

then Susan showing up, taunting Owl "Oh what are you going to do, hit a woman?" then Jen steps forward XD

then it turns out Susan's also a drugwolf

I know they'd never be able to keep the kids, and it's hardly an ideal environment with Owl's Onlyfans and Megg and Mogg being massive potheads, but I still wish they could.

Reckon that's probably to account for Insta's strict no nipples rule. He still seems to be allowed to have her with her bush out (and in one memorable recent story, with a massive cock)

I'm partway through Bad Gateway now, and man is it bleak compared to Crisis Zone; where in CZ you have something wacky like turds slipping out of WWJ's arse in the jacuzzi 'cos he's such an Anus King, or the kids building a disgusting multi-storey hotel, BG is never that heightened, employing a slow, melancholy pace. I wonder how much of it is Hanselman's changing mood, and how much is the demands of pacing an Insta comic. There's no room in CZ for the excruciating pace of Megg waiting at the welfare office, after all. Maybe CZ will change Hanselman' s tone permanently; I hope not though, even if the rapid yuks of CZ are legitimate and enjoyable. (Edit: such a delineation between the tones of his long form and short form media isn't hard and fast, as the most recent CZ strips show. Although, even if Hanselman has upped the bleakness, the pace is still pretty snappy).

Have you read any other compilations? Crisis Zone is most broad in terms of humour, but "In Amsterdam" and "One More Year" are more comical than "Bad Gateway" and "Megahex" (I assume, I've not read it). I think Hanselmann is quite good compartmentalising the two styles both the bleakness off the main canon story and the more comical episodic comics.

I'm partway through Bad Gateway now, and man is it bleak compared to Crisis Zone; where in CZ you have something wacky

Exactly why I got into CZ but struggled with the Megg and Mogg books I've looked at before (although I do plan to sit down and take a proper crack at then when the libraries open again). I think also things were so stressful and odd at the beginning of the pandemic that disgusting hijinks were a necessary distraction. The times are still awful now, of course, but with the vaccines emerging and people used to the weird new status quo, there's more room for gloom in the strip.

Only got into Megg, Mogg & Owl this year and picked up all the available trades in the Fantagraphic comixology sale. Absolutely love them, although I agree that the pervasive dread can unsettle my brain if I'm in the wrong mood. Megg's relationship with her Mum gives me guilt in a way that I'm a bit scared to explore.

I've been really enjoying the Quarantine comics and Christ the rate and quality of outputs is impressive, isn't it. Got Seeds & Stems arriving for Christmas as my first physical copy of their misadventures.

Can't remember which book it's collected in but Werewolf Jones disguising himself as an arcade machine to get wanked off (specifically the silent panel before the final "Game Over" panel) is the hardest I've laughed in 2020.

Since Seeds and Stems is a collection of zines, can it be read out of sequence with the others?

Yeah I reckon so. I'm another newcomer to Megg Mogg and Owl for what it's worth. Seeds and Stems includes strips from the Werewolf Jones and Sons zines and gives some  background for the Jones family dynamics which I really enjoyed.

My favourite is a strip from Megahex[?] where Megg and Mogg rob a deli store and end up with lemons, bottled water, boxes of "the bad Skittles" and a ball of mystery meat because it was dark and Mogg just grabbed. Then they get paranoid about the cops coming and bury all the stuff in the woods, but that's not enough so the next morning they hatch an ingenious scheme to go to the deli and buy everything they stole so the cops will never suspect that it was them.

Definitely - a fair chunk of it is out of continuity (or alt-continuity), though a few bits that seemed like throwaway jokes at the time have gradually become central. Even WWJ's kids were initially introduced as kind of a one-off joke ("ha ha, this degenerate has kids") and it's only been relatively recently that they've developed their own distinct personalities.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how Crisis Zone affects Hanselmann's work going forward. It's seemed like he wanted to make a hard turn into more serious stuff pretty much from the moment he got a book deal (the first couple of chapters of the original version of Bad Gateway, Megg's Coven, appeared in an Australian comic magazine around that time) but the wacky comedy stuff was clearly super popular and he was smart enough to run with that for a few more books.

I suspect even if he does go back to the Bad Gateway approach and storyline, he'll still do more comedic side projects (even just more zines) to keep the comedy fans on board.

*edit* And it's over!

Almost didnt bother checking insta today. Some nice admissions here about the run...

Quote
Thanks for all the kind words. I’ve enjoyed doing Crisis Zone for you this year (even though some days it felt like an immense, exhausting burden). I set out in mid-March to provide some free entertainment for the terrified masses and hopefully help relieve some of the anxiety and horror going around. Originally it was going to run for around a month and maybe be printed as a zine... I became addicted to it and couldn’t stop... probably should have stopped months ago... ANYWAY, the book comes out August 10th from @fantagraphics (English version), will also be coming out in Spanish, French, Swedish, Italian and more languages. Book will include at least 500 additional panels, a director’s commentary, character follow-ups etc... (preorders through Fantagraphics will net you a special Crisis Zone calendar for 2022). No rest for the wicked, I’ll be continuing to work my ass off on this project over the next 6 weeks, gotta make the book fancy, if you are able to I hope you’ll consider picking up a copy for your rumpus room or bomb shelter. Thanks again for all the kind words, the criticism, the moaning, the threats... all of it. May your 2021 be tolerable! Good luck! 🖤🎲🎲🎭<|:-)

I got all five of the collected books (Megahex, Amsterdam, One More Year, Bad Gateway and Seeds and Stems) on Kindle because I didn't want to pay the exorbitant shipping costs. I imagine the e-books will be available even if physical copies aren't.

Got a copy of Megg and Mogg in Amsterdam via Amazon from a comic shop in Paris (I *think* it's in English), last copy apparently.

Gonna snap up Bad Gateway and Seeds & Stems at the earliest opportunity.  And this is off how much I loved following Crisis Zone and...this thread.

I don't have a great phone or an e-reader, but Waterstones and Wordery seem to have them at normal prices (for UK comic hardbacks).  Fuck it, might do it now, try to stop me.

You can get them in the UK off Amazon or wherever for about 15 quid. You don’t really need to import the American editions. I picked up One More Year from a comic shop in Brighton

Read Megahex through to Bad Gateway, waiting on Seeds and Stems.

Predictable opinion - Megg and her mum is heartbreaking.

Oof yeah. Even though the dynamic with me own mum is nothing like Megg's, reading those sections leave me queasy, and make me feel guilty that I should somehow be better at communicating with mine. Raw and powerful stuff.

They're just all really disappointing people.  Obviously Mogg is hateful but when he tries to get a job even for a second, you cheer for him.  Even Jones tries to get clean for a second.  Owl is an interesting one because you lose sympathy over time, not necessarily for his behaviour but him also sort of blaming his shitty friends for his own failures - though they are responsible for a few of them.
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine
Post by: 13 schoolyards on January 07, 2021, 01:00:13 PM
In Megahex Owl has a fairly straightforward arc - he's crap and has issues, but isn't quite as crap as everyone else so the ending is a bit of a feel-good moment for him. But once you get into the rest of the series, Owl gradually becomes (IMHO) the worst of the lot.

Everyone else has their moments of self-awareness and their (brief, pathetic) attempts to redeem themselves, but Owl's just consistently a bit of a smug shit who is never quite as righteous and well-meaning as he thinks he is. Everyone else has their moments of doubt that make them people you hope can improve, but Owl is always going to be Owl.

I never got this "Owl is the worst" line of thinking. Sure, he's smug and condescending, but they've cost him jobs, fucked up his stuff, fucked up his dates, got him arrested, seriously injured him and they even raped him on his birthday, yet still he puts up with their shit and bails them out of their mess.

Nothing Owl has ever done is remotely as bad as what the others are capable of. His biggest crime is that he hasn't permanently left them, but that's not an unusual trait for abuse victims.

He's not the worst, but maybe the least likeable, by the end.  Or maybe even the most pitiable; it'll depend what he's been doing during Bad Gateway.

Likeable is maybe the wrong word, most frustrating?  I suppose that's his arc; he's the most able to get away from that shitty life, and yet he persists, but then he does eventually leave.

It's sort of odd reading Megahex, where he does leave, and then Amsterdam and One More Year *sort of* happening in between?

I'd say Owl's the worst (though "worst" is probably not the right word) because there's no real hope for change. Everyone else does horrible things then occasionally expresses some minor regret; Owl never does anything *that* bad, but he never realises he's not perfect either. Over the run of the series, that gradually wore me down.

If Owl's not the worst, is he the best? Or is that Megg? Booger?
Title: Re: Megg Mogg & Owl in Quarantine

I think the reason for the Owl-hate is similar to the reason some people really hated Diane in BoJack Horseman. People feel like Owl "should" be better than he is. He's the most functional of the trio - he holds down a job, cares whether the house is clean, he does far fewer drugs than Megg and Mogg. He should've left that pit of horrible a long time ago. Instead he hung around for almost a decade after high school, perhaps because he has a crush on Megg still, but in my opinion because living with two huge drug addicts allows him to indulge his own cravings while handily blaming them when the shit hits the fan. Owl, you know you have to be up early for your new job working for your dad's golfing buddy, WHY are you doing ketamine with the two stoners?! You're the only one who cares about bettering himself so what the hell?

Megg didn't have much of a chance in life, her mother dealt drugs out of the house while she was a kid (something nobody would do if they had a decent income), and Mogg is quite content to leech off his parents. The bar is much lower for them because realistically, what can you expect from them? Owl is capable of better behaviour and of escaping Drug World, and so people shit on him harder.

Just read a recent fanzine interview with Hanselmann where it sounds like he's been going asbsolutely mental with the extras for the book version of Crisis Zone (also, if you order it direct from Fantagraphics and can stomach the massive postage you'll get a free 2022 calendar).

It also sounds like he's a bit over the planned direction for Megg's Coven - he calls Bad Gateway "boring" (then takes it back) and says he's not really sure about going all serious and dark after a year of piss-farting around on instagram.
