Comedy folks in music videos.

Inspired by this Kate Bush thread, I've been on a bit of a KB YouTube kick (inside!), can't recall noticing it before but I see that The Comic Strip's Peter Richardson pops up at the end of the 'Rubberband Girl' video. That in turn has inspired my latest died-on-it's-arse thread discussing comedy folks appearing in music videos!

Could have posted this in Oscillations, but then comedy being the main theme... of course I'm really talking about comedy folks appearing in other people's music videos rather than comedians who dabbled in music (Alexei Sayle, for instance)... and then of course there are the novelty/Comic Relief etc. releases (Cliff Richard and The Young Ones, Mel & Kim etc.), but then what the hey, it's all good if we wanna discuss them too.

Speaking of Kate Bush, Tim 'Lord Percy/Kevin Darling' McInnerny appears in the video for her song 'This Woman's Work'. Meanwhile Hugh Laurie features prominently (alongside John Malkovich!) in Annie Lennox's 'Walking on Broken Glass' video, in a very Price Regent-like role.

Then there's Chevy Chase in Paul Simon's 'You Can Call Me Al' video and Chase and Steve Martin in the video for Simon's 'Proof'. The Ghostbusters theme music video features cameos from several SNL/other comedy people including Chase and John Candy (who was originally supposed to play Rick Moranis' role in the movie).

And then there's Graham Chapman in the video for Iron Maiden's 'Can I Play with Madness', Bruce Dickinson being something of a Python fan. Dickinson later collaborated with Mr. Bean of all people for this cover of Alice Cooper's 'Elected' for Comic Relief.

Jack Black appears in the video for Beck's 'Sexx Laws', of course with Tenacious D he's no stranger to the music world.

I know there are some blindingly obvious vids I can't think of at the moment... help me out people!

Hey hey, good one TCB! Going back to Kate Bush, apparently she appeared in and wrote a song for The Comic Strip, something that kind of rings a bell, also there's no music video for it but apparently Lenny Henry contributed to a KB song (alongside Prince!), namely 'Why Should I Love You?' from The Red Shoes. I one of those people that considers themselves a kind of Kate Bush 'fan' but in fact I only really know handfuls of songs from different albums. Meanwhile, since you mentioned Rik, any excuse to post this lovely photo:

What else... speaking of The Young Ones with Cliff; Rik, Ade and Nigel Planer of course made up Bad News alongside Peter Richardson... was there an official video for Neil's cover of Traffic's 'Hole in My Shoe'? Just ToTP appearances and such on YT.

Mel Smith of course asked Kim Wilde to do 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree' with him just so it could be 'Mel & Kim'... did The Goodies ever release any 'official' music promo videos? Also there's Graham Fellows who had a hit as Jilted John before going on to John Shuttleworth. And countless novelty comedy records from sitcom/stand-up folk, but that's enough comedians doing there own songs/music videos for now!

After Jack Black & Kyle Gas were the drug smuggling janitors for Foo Fighters 'Learn To Fly', Jack returned as a crossdressing hillbilly in their 'Low' vid.
Rashida Jones was in their 'Long Road To Ruin' promo and just yesterday they put out a vid for 'Love Dies Young' with Jason Sudeikis adlibbing a motivational speech in character as a German synchronized swim coach.

He's directed/starred in a few. I remember doing a little "ooh!" when spotting him doing a very uninvolved/secondary spot in the video for "Use It" by The New Pornographers.

He also directed the video for 10AM Automatic by derivative and bafflingly successful band The Black Keys, which also stars Jon Glaser.

Now that you've mentioned it, I'm pretty sure I saw a video for that when I was a kid, I have a vague memory of Neil walking down a high street and stepping in a puddle.

The Mr Show people have been in a lot of stuff, David Cross was in a Strokes video, Jill Talley and Tom Kenny in a Smashing Pumpkins vid, I'm sure there's a few more.

DJ Bob Hoskins

Not sure this counts, but a pre-fame Adam Scott was in the video for Drive by R.E.M.

Some may well argue that being a "comedy folk" is stretching it, but Phil Jupitus appears in the background of bits of the Housemartin's 'Happy Hour' video. He had a job at Go! Records at the time, I think. He also directed and made a brief appearance in Billy Bragg's 'Sexuality' vid.

His fellow 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks' captain Sean Hughes turns up in Terrorvision's 'Tequilla' and the Cure's 'The 13th' promos - Robert Newman is also in the latter.

Hasn't Jack Black been in a few Foo Fighters videos as well?

Does John C Reilly in the JSBE video for Talk About The Blues count?

Some of that weird morphy shit in Michael "Wacko Jacko" Jackson's Black Or White video had comedians turning into other people didn't it?

Thank God somebody (else) mentioned this one - every single time I've mentioned Sadowitz to anybody I know (in contrast to complete strangers) over 40*, they've had no idea who he is until I say "the guy from Ebeneezer Goode".

*people under 40 have no idea who Ebeneezer Goode is either

Robin Williams in the video for Bobby McFerrin's 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'. Oh and Bill Irwin, who I'm not familiar with too. [EDIT]Oh wait dissolute ocelot just mentioned that!

And lest we forget McFerrin's 'Thinkin' About Your Body' is referenced in the infamous Little & Large C&W Megamix, thanks to it's use in this Cadbury's ad. The matter is settled!

Hobo With A Shit Pun

Key evidence that Morrissey hasn't always been a gammon cunt (or at least could hide it from collaborators): Kathy Burke in the video for Ouija Board.
(With bonus Joan Sims doing a lovely Madam Acarte turn, although that doesn't suggest anything about his politics. And for that matter Burke was happy to work with James Dreyfus, so who knows. Maybe he wasn't a cunt at that point either. Although he has always been annoying).

Ah yes, and Keith Allen natch. Wasn't the video originally supposed to have a darker tone? And isn't Blur's 'Charming Man' supposed to about Allen, Damon Albarn having not gotten on with him or summit?
