The Guppy

Quote from: Mister Six on November 24, 2021, 01:27:00 AMCan someone tell me what happened in the mid-credits scene? I turned it off and deleted the file when the credits began, and I can't be arsed downloading it again.
Vinder found the bloke Bel saved from the Passenger Pulse of Doom, and he's like "seen this bird?" and he's like "aye but she fucked off", and he shows him a recorded message Bel left.

Bel's like "best be brief because I'm on 1% battery, I love you, I've gone off somewhere, I'll tell you where in a minute, I love you by the way, I think we should get a cat, remember that time when we bought salmon and it was off and we took it back and the guy was like nah that's how it's supposed to smell, I really love you and I think you're brilliant, do you think we should get a cat? Anyway I love you and I've gone off somewhere and the co-ordinates are OH SHIT ME BATTERY BZZZZZT*click*"

Then Vinder made a face and the credits resumed.

AND DAN FELL THROUGH THE BAR

Mister Six

Ah, classic Chibnall.

What a waste of Mr Inbetweeners. Although at this point that's pretty much the standard operating procedure for Who, isn't it? Remember when Moffat got Olivia Colman in to lie in a bed, then deliver a couple of lines of dialogue?

"Now we know. Now we know."

The Eleventh Hour is mad for how it casually burns through guest stars; Nina Wadia, Perry Benson, Annette Crosby, as well as Colman. Pre-fame Tom Hopper as the handsome masturbator too. Couple of lines each and then done.

Of course, they were merely fodder to flesh out Amy's world and where she fits in it. As opposed to Neil who was in it to do precisely nothing.

Quote from: Mister Six on November 24, 2021, 01:27:00 AMA thought on the inevitable fucking up of The Doctor's backstory: what about some later writer revealing that The Doctor's backstory is permanently in flux, constantly shifting, so that it can never be defined and entirely known? That way "Theta Sigma", the half-human, The Timeless Child, Clara as the reason The Doctor stole that particular TARDIS and everything else some misguided fool decided (or will decide) to cram into the pre-Hartnell years are all true and all false at the same time.

That is basically what the EDAs did to get around the half-human thing.

I like it, though.  Not making a meal of its guest stars, just having really famous people pop up for something relatively insignificant.

One of the things that makes the show quirky if that's not become a shit word.

Midas

Isn't this also a budgetary thing? I recall RTD saying (in the Toby Hadoke interview) that they often struggled to book big name guest stars for large parts because they could rarely justify the expense, when there was always other things to spend the money on (i.e. concept artists, CGI artists, matte painters, model-makers, prosthetic artists, practical FX, etc.)

S'pose offering someone a small role isn't the same as giving them a shit one, tho.

Kelvin

The bigger stars always gave it a bit of a credibility boost, though. Like it was in rude health, something every actor wanted to be associated with. You don't want the show relying on guest stars, but it's also no bad thing when people see high profile and respected actors in something like this.

Cloud

Yeah that angels episode was so much better.

Getting concerned about this preview of New Years Day (also when RTD takes over can he pleeeeease reverse this shit decision, I used to love having DW to look forward to on Christmas Day). I wouldn't put it past Chibnall to want to "make his mark" (yes another one) by blowing up the TARDIS. And then the Doc struggles around on Earth for a bit before being given a cliffhanger "failed regeneration" at the end.  Hopefully RTD can sort that out with some sort of retcon too rather than going down the road of "ooh new TARDIS with working chameleon circuit".  Or worse, Chibnall managing to set one in stone first. Wasn't there hints of the police box going away because ACAB or was that just right wing trolling?

"Hopefully RTD can sort out this thing that I've just made up in my head"

Cloud

Pardon me for speculating, I didn't realise we were only allowed to be concerned about confirmed ideas and not shit that could feasibly happen based on the performance and personality of the current show runner.

Don't think so. They're no longer allowed to use the St. John's Ambulance logo but I doubt they'd ditch the police box.

Or what Christopher H. Bidmead did in season 21?

The Roofdog

Can you imagine Whittaker's Doctor being stranded on Earth. With Capaldi or Smith it'd be "how can they integrate with human society" With her it's just going to be "oh it's Debbie from accounts"

Heh. She's been distinctive this time around though, sort of.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

A sizzling spoiler-free preview of episode five, Survivors of the Flux.

Spoiler alert
Not bad.

The tedious clusterfuck of episode three aside, I've actually quite enjoyed this series. I'm not especially interested in most of the component parts, but the epic serial format has charged it with a bit of superficial zing. It's certainly more enjoyabe than anything Chibnall has written for Doctor Who thus far. Regard that as faint praise if you like.

There's no point adding all the usual caveats at this stage, we know what they are, so I'll concentrate on the positives.

Jericho is a welcome addition to the team, Kevin McNally is excellent. Chibnall has managed to (co) create a memorable recurring character. Better late than never, I suppose.

And the surprises don't end there: he's also managed to write a light-hearted scene that's actually quite funny. It's not exactly side-splitting, but it does contain some jokes that land. Well done, Chris!

Craig Parkinson is great as this sort of surrogate scheming Master figure (that's not a spoiler, he isn't the Master), and it's nice to see Kate again.

The episode is well-paced and structured for the most part. It zips around space and time, but in a way you can actually follow.

Negatives? Oh, alright then. While Jodie Whittaker has been pretty good this year, her role in this episode is 90% expository. Chibnall lumbers her with an incessant volley of questions, most of which receive tiresomely enigmatic answers. That's not how you build intrigue, it's just frustrating.

I wish the Timeless Child/Division bollocks would fuck off forever, but inevitably we're stuck with it right now. RTD will presumably have to retcon it at some point, as I can't imagine him being happy with such a vast and cumbersome remoulding of the Doctor's backstory.

tl;dr? S'alright. I was never bored or particularly annoyed by it.

Re: Ballad's review there,

Spoiler alert
More Kevin McNally and Craig Parkinson is great news, but having yet more subplots to worry about has me concerned that it's getting too unwieldy for Chibnall to manage even a vaguely competent close. I keep remembering how Cybercunt was killed by The Master and the whole annihilation of the human race (which, of course, was earlier teased with the Captain Jack appearance and used as a cliffhanger in Villa) was completely forgotten about because all Chibnall was interested in was the Timeless Child reveal.

Can't help but suspect the Flux and Swarm parts of this story will be dispensed with perfunctorily so that Chibnall can wallow in his teenage fanfic bollocks about the Division and the Timeless Child.

And he probably thinks that's good plotting, a big surprising pivot like peak Game of Thrones used to pull.

Female Doctor Who turning kids to a life of crime says Tory MP dickhead.

QuoteNick Fletcher said "female replacements" in shows like Doctor Who were robbing boys of good role models.

The only characters they had to look up to were gangsters the Krays and Tommy Shelby from Peaky Blinders, he said.

"Is there any wonder we are seeing so many young men committing crime?," he told MPs taking part in a debate on International Men's Day.

His comments were met with surprise by Labour Party chair Anneliese Dodds, who said she thought she had "misheard" him.

The reason boys turned to a life of crime was "far more complex" than "who should be the next 007", she added.

But later, Mr Fletcher tweeted a statement, saying his "rather nuanced point" that there were "increasingly fewer male role models for young boys" had been "misconstrued".

Dickhead.

QuoteAfter his speech gained attention on social media, Mr Fletcher released a statement on Twitter, saying his point "in no way linked Dr Who being female to crime being committed by men".

He said: "Teachers, parents and carers need to teach young men and boys that males can make a positive difference.

"Promoting this can be done through various means, including through films and programmes.

"Yet something not often discussed is that the only characters many boys with no good male role models in their lives see on television and online are increasingly criminal."

The MP added: "I did not link a Dr Who being female to crime being committed by men - in fact, I was making a statement that boys and young men also need positive role models within the media, just as women do."

Utter dickhead.

Chibnall being showrunner has potentially led people to crime.

This is a joke. The Tory cunt is a cunt.

Mister Six

"Crime isn't due to poverty, or a lack of opportunity, or a failure by schools, or parents having kids before they're ready due to social pressure, or poor socialisation due to systemic failures, or a lack of proper mental health provisioning, or a prison system that is too punitive and not rehabilitative enough, or a countrywide inability to express emotions in a constructive and healing way, it's because there are too many women on my TV."

I fucking hate Tories.

Jerzy Bondov

Breathtakingly stupid and pointless.

And that Tory MP is pretty bad as well!

Mild relief, how would you compare it to the first two episodes? They went down fairly well, but I didn't get a whole lot out of them myself.

What the fuck is a fucking Tory doing in the Don Valley anyway? Fucking cuckoo MP sneaking in on the back of GBD crap and stinking out his new nest. You'd think he'd remain in disguised mode for the duration but no, he suddenly thinks that what a constituency which happily avoided odious cunts like him for almost 100 years suddenly wants is more hateful bullshit. Kick the fucking squatters out.
