Have to post this here because I'm fucking angry and I need to vent. A "Korean People React" channel uploaded this incredibly ill-advised "Western Vs Asian Meme" video, and the comments section is now full of the usual pondscum wanking themselves stupid going on and on about how racism doesn't exist in jokes. Like the moment at 3 minutes 11 seconds into the video is just a good laugh and a bit of fun, apparently. Really fucked off at this, as it was one of those sorts of channels that I'd stick on for a bit of light relief from absolutely everything, and now the cunts have descended. To be fair, the European girl is clearly uncomfortable. Some choice quotes:

QuoteLMAO its not racism its a stereotype

QuoteIt's a stereotype it's not racist... people know that not everyone is like that, also Family Guy is American and people are not that racist in Europe... They are quite open :)

QuoteThis video just shows how ridiculously "politicly correct" westerners have become. Its not fun if you have to be afraid of offending all the time. If I was an asian I would be offended by how hard the girl tries to not "hurt my feelings".

That last one is of course from a white guy.

This is glorious (particularly if you agree with Glenn Gould about Mozart; perhaps not so much if you don't): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JauII1jCG6Q

Interesting slice of the 70s. I liked the no-nonsense Sister. "He seemed like a weak little man..."

I guess that wasn't the city's main A&E though. Would there have been one in every hospital in those days?

Also enjoyed the Blood and Guts film.

It was the Royal Southern Hospital in Toxteth. one of the local hospitals outside the city centre (alongside Smithdown Rd/Sefton General, Newsham Park, Broad Green, David Lewis Northern, Walton and Fazakerley) with the main city centre hospital being the Liverpool Royal Infirmary. All had their own casualty departments. When the Royal Infirmary was rebuilt and expanded in the early 70s, some of the smaller hospitals (the Royal Southern and David Lewis Northern) were closed (the A&E department in the programme closed not long after it was made). Newsham Park and Sefton General were closed in the 80s, leaving Walton, Broadgreen and the 'Royal' as the main casualty hospitals.

Eventually Broad Green merged with the Royal to become Liverpool NHS Trust and had it's A&E department transferred to the city centre site (Broad Green became a cardiothoracic centre) and Walton merged with Fazakerley to become Aintree NHS Trust (with the Walton site being closed down, though it's name lives on in the Walton Centre neurology department at Fazakerley). As part of the plans for rebuilding the Royal (which was left half-finished when Carillion went tits-up), the A&E department at Fazakerley was expanded in 2016 to become the main trauma centre for the area (it's less thna a mile from my house, and as there is a helipad built on the roof of the new A&E I get air ambulances flying over regularly).

Thanks for the info. Many of those old buildings, like the Royal Southern, were subsequently used as ad hoc office accommodation for various NHS departments, with minimal refurbishment. I know someone who did clerical work in Fielding Johnson Hospital in Leicester around 1990 - it had a large disused ward and theatre upstairs that still had dried blood on the floor. Spooky horror film stuff if she was still there after 5pm in the winter.

Soft White Underbelly. A series of riveting interviews with people who have ended up on the wrong end of society.

I liked part one. No Greg (a bonus) and a bit more of his missus. The distance is half of Wales (he's picked a very thin sliver, which is obviously good) but seems more likely to prevent him. Hope he gets one on the board this time.

"He could knock out a divertimento the way an accounts executive dispatches an inter-office memo."

It's funny. If you read Gould's writings on the page (try "The Glenn Gould Reader") it's often so stilted and torturously written, but the same oddball musings really come alive when he's presenting. There is a school of thought that his innovations in broadcasting and studio recording are his true legacy...

I love Jelle's Marble Runs, and I'm pretty confident in saying it's been my favourite sporting event to watch this year. It's pitched perfectly, and if you watch it too, I'm a Hazers fan (despite their logo being pretty boring).

Anyway, British Youtube celebs the Sidemen discovered them this week, doing a show on their "Reacts" channel where they watch an old event and bet on it. At the beginning, they were all "marble racing, this is stupid" but by the end they were screaming in support of "their" marbles and seemed pretty serious about doing a collaboration with Jelle's Marble Runs on their main channel, which has over 10 million subscribers.

It's just nice. Like that time Showaddywaddy and Einsturzende Neubauten were on the same bill and the EN fans apparently had a great time during Showaddywaddy's set. Worlds colliding, and everyone having a good time.
