They're still going?

Bands from the 00s onwards often don't really appear to split up formally, even when it's clear they've kind of chucked it, yet probably leaving the door open for a momentous occasion like a 15th-anniversary album tour with The Rakes supporting.  A quick check of their Wiki page will usually have no end date attached to their existence.  Bit of a shame really, it was much more fun when bands would split up properly, like The Jam, The Smiths, Oasis, Lostprophets etc.

The Psychedelic Furs are releasing a new album in July, 29 years after their last one https://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/the-pyschedelic-furs-made-of-rain-exclusive-signed-cd/ .
I met the Butler brothers on a train in about 2012 and they were working on new material then. They've pretty much spent most of the last years 20 doing the nostalgia circuit in America - I saw them do a "singles" gig maybe three years ago, which was decent enough, but I'm not sure how enthused I am about this: "The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll" is a terrible title.

The Blow Monkeys have put out ten studio albums but they did have seventeen years off between 1990 and 2007.

Still, *ten* albums. Fair play to them.

Captain Crunch

I've had people express surprise when I say I'm going to see Half Man Half Biscuit.  Then they start talking about that Trumpton song.

That is strange, given they've been putting out albums and doing gigs (at decent sized venues, at least in Manchester) fairly regularly for, what, the last 30 years?

The kings of this.
Ireland's longest running showband.

Oh, they have been criticised.

Trust me, they're SJWs compared to the Zulus.

From my understanding Gomez managed to tap into the career-extending and relatively profitable 'jam band' scene in the States circa the time they were dumper-bound back home.

I'm a bit surprised they didn't push home the ground they'd won in America with those last two albums, but they were maybe just knackered out by that point. I think it was around that time I heard them on one of those big US tv shows (House, CSI, that kind of thing), which I hope bought them a few pints.

Lieutenant Pigeon – of 1972's 'Mouldy Old Dough' fame – still appear to be releasing new music as of 2019.

I was hoping to link to their latest single but to hear it you have to send them a cheque in the post.

Lisa Jesusandmarychain

Some marvellous value at £4.99, there.

Two pages and nobody's mentioned Therapy? yet. Very frequently I've spoken about enjoying a new album to be met with several "they're still going?!" replies.

I'm always amazed at the amount of pop singers who continue well after their chart success has run out. Kim Wilde's last album was in 2018, and the Wikipedia entry for it notes it was her first charting album in 25 years. What record label goes "ah yes, a formerly successful pop star whose last five albums have failed to crack the top 100 - lets give her a contract"?

"Ball and Peacock worked on the side project Operation Aloha. The experimental project designed by photographer Christopher Wray-McCann brought together 14 of his friends, living in tree houses making songs with whatever they could bring to the island of Maui, Hawaii. "

I find the fickle 'find 'em, fuck 'em, forget 'em' of fandom fascinating.

Every couple of years, I think about the excellent Therapy? stuff from my youth, but I've never been sufficiently stirred to see what they're up to.

I just watched the "Pop Don't Stop" video off of that album and...I'm stumped as to why anyone would write it, release it or buy it.

Thanks to their mention on the previous page, I played that most recent Johnny Hates Jazz single. It sounded like they'd gotten together on the off chance of writing a song for the reformed Take That, but had been rejected, so they thought "fuck it, let's do it ourselves". And their original lead singer returned...there was apparently a version of Johnny Hates Jazz you could have seen at one point without the original lead singer?

Swing Out Sister are still going, and apparently released their eleventh album a few years ago.  Seems like they're big in Japan.

Their finest moment for me is unquestionably their superb cover of "Am I the Same Girl".

The original singer left after the first album and was replaced by Phil Thornalley, who had previously not only produced the Cure's 'Pornography' but also filled in on bass for a time - that's him in the video for 'The Lovecats'.

Pancake

Was in the Dulux Decorators Centre the other day and heard Chelsea Dagger by the Fratellis, which is literally the worst lager and football shirt twat going WOOOOOAAAAA in your face, in a song.

For some reason googled them hoping to find a news story of them perishing in a caravan fire but apparently they're still going

They've spent their post-major label career largely alternating between weird, heavy albums and poppy, punky albums. The former are usually excellent and the latter rarely worth a go. 2010's Crooked Timber and 2012's A Brief Crack of Light are their two career highlights by my book, some very odd stuff on the latter in particular.

Deep Purple?? In 2020? Good god. They still sound pretty good too.

I saw them live recently. Opening song or two were new (both off 2018's Cleave) and the levels/volume felt off. Very 'thin' sounding, and his voice was all over the shop. Thankfully, after that, they absolutely smashed it.

Her last two studio albums (2013's Wilde Winter Songbook and 2018's Here Come the Aliens) have been self-released on her own label Wildeflower Records. It should be noted that there was an 11-year period between 1995 and 2006 where she never released anything after her deal with MCA expired.

At that point it looks like she took time out to start a family, but also must have been when she started her gardening career, at which she has been very successful, winning a Royal Horticultural Society award and doing a Guardian column.

I feel like bumping this thread is appropriate, given the topic.

Charlotte Hatherley popped into my head today, listening to some Kleenex Girl Wonder and there was a bit which reminded me of something off her - as far as I was aware - only solo album after leaving Ash. Well, she's been pretty busy in the intervening years, releasing new music up to a few years ago, and being in several touring bands (including Bryan Ferry's) and is now the main musician behind someone called Nakhane.

Anyway, I played her last single, from 2018, and it might as well have been an entirely different musician. Obviously, evolution and all that, but.

Ride. I had no idea they were back together until a friend mentioned she was going to see them tonight.

Memorex MP3

The Dodos, 2009's band for people who were so desperate for more animal collective content that they'd rave over a collection of Sung Tongs knockoffs.

The Wrens endless attempts at making a follow up to the Meadowlands only finished last year, with one member getting fed up and releasing his bits as a solo act and the whole band seemingly having a massive falling out.
