Oh was pointed in the direction of this before. 1981 Japanese Synth pop/soul(soul?) It is rather lovely.

I don't know what I expect this thread to be but anyone got any other Japanese language recommendations? Or anything that is ace that might have been completely passed by because it is not in English? Is there an Albanian Kate Bush?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys3GSK6XO6o&feature=youtu.be

Full album.

A couple of tracks actually remind me of Carly Rae Jepsen at her mid paced quirky vibe. She has a similar timbre to her voice at times. Edit: actually a lot of it is giving me CRJ vibes.

Rose Garden is honestly one of the most electrifying and joyful songs I can remember.

I love her dearly! I was staying in Triora the summer before last and played Akiko when having dinner with my host and he was struck by how much she sounded like Kate Bush to him, particularly on Ai Ga Nakucha Ne.

Here's an odd one for youse

I've been completely obsessed by Susumu Hirasawa this year (you might know him from Satochi Kon film's soundtracks, but his solo work doesn't seem very famous). he's made so many techno pop bangers

Code-Costarica

Archetype Engine

On Line Malaysia

and this is just the tip of the iceberg really

his band P-Model is quite something too

Wire Self

Shagan Daishi

fit bird

Mishio Ogawa is good, but less weird than Akiko Yano.
Solo stuff gets a bit too close to easy listening, but her band Chakra are good:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUR2CobettE
and she's great performing here with the Haniwa Allstars:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbvTpX59jrc
Jun Togawa is good, but edgier than Akiko Yano.
From an album about singing robots:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMD8LtG8Yao
With her band Yapoos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X9IQ3021Mw
and solo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n78YYThHZfE

Ichiko Hashimoto (who I think filled in for Akiko Yano while she was on maternity leave from YMO)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcGId2DnbSE
Who goes all the way from lovely piano stuff to bad Sam & Dave covers.

Basically typed this out word for word, but you beat me to it. P-Model are the greatest.

and if we stick to synthpop japanese singer, Jun Togawa never fails to cheer me up

edit: soz fit bird, didn't see your post :) although I guess there are never enough links to Togawa's songs

I like loads of Japanese stuff. Something I always recommend is Salyu, who did an album with Cornelius a few years ago that was pretty good, but the live album they did afterwards is extraordinary. Love this performance of Dorei ("Slave") .

Sandi and the Sunsetsz - Sticky Music

Featuring Hosono in vid and producer I think?

Sandii's solo work is also excellent. Both her and Yukihiro Takahashi (of YMO) do their own wonderful versions of one of my fave tunes Drip Dry Eyes. Sandii's being really dubby

Sandii

Yukihiro

Managed to catch Haruomi perform a few years ago and I was a taaaad disappointed he'd reverted back to his Tin Pan Alley grooves of his pre-YMO days: "I used to make techno-music but I don't make techno-music anymore"

He DID however play Tokyo Rush in the encore which was fabulouussz. I missed out, bc the London show actually had Ryuichi and Yukihiro come onstage and play Absolute Ego Dance. Fucking gutted

Cliché as balls but I like Babymetal's Metal Resistance and The Gru rock pretty hard as well.

There is an old 90s hop hop ditty called Da Yo Ne which I have always loved. https://youtu.be/ZF99pK_go9g

I wil listen to everything posted here with glee but Rose Garden is eating away at me. What does that initlal vocal remind me of? I have listened to the entiire run of Chart Music podcast and I am sure it was on that. 00:26 into this:

Oh this is amazing. I appreciate the other tracks but this my thing.

It's great isn't it. The synchronised "woo!" at the end of the bridge (3:50ish) is one of my favourite ever musical moments. Such a concentrated moment of joy.

Here's another good one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brec06BA6JU&ab_channel=TOYSFACTORYJP

And here's them covering Hammond Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_vw58ooxCM&ab_channel=oblateaustral

I'm guessing Salyu x Salyu is an extension of Salyu. This is my contribution. How amazing? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DChoNWcIbLw

Sorry. Turned Mouse on Mars off and went back to these. Paradise... swoon.

There's Hiroshi Yoshimura, who I heard on Radio 3 and then found all his albums on youtube, his music is nice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uh4vuiDsvpg

There's also a band called Prism, who play this really epic prog/virtuoso guitar music. Like Steve Vai/Joe Satriani type stuff crossed with ambient/spiritual music. I don't normally listen to guitar solo stuff but their music is really uplifting

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UXcu6bd3ZU

There's also Fifi and the Mach III, a punk band that John Peel used to play sometimes in the late 90s.

The phenomenon of Japanese 70s-80s ambient music getting big on YouTube in the last few years has been written about quite a bit - there's a few articles online about it. Some of these albums are more widely heard now then they ever were at the time.

Wonderful thread, thank you all for the recommendations. I'll be working my way through.

I love the song in the OP and popcorn, that live band. Wow. The second song had me crying with happiness. I haven't felt like that in a long while from new music.

Sincerely, thank you.

This is something jazz/classical/ambient that I heard on Radio 3 about 5/6 years ago and it ended up being my doorway into similar stuff - from Israel and Poland - Sirkis/Bialas (I chat to them on facebook sometimes now too)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzEYUDkV4bY

it sort of led me to more famous artists in a similar style like Agnes Obel

Is Salyu a singer or a band?

Salyu is a singer. She released her first album under the name Lily Chou-Chou, which is sort of Bjorky and dreamy. One of the songs was used briefly in Kill Bill (though wasn't released on the Kill Bill soundtrack album).

I'm guessing Salyu x Salyu is an extension of Salyu.

The name Salyu x Salyu was used for Soundbeams, a one-off album she made with the producer Cornelius (who is fairly well known and worth checking out if you haven't already).

In Japan they use the format "Someone x Someone Else" for collaborations - like, I dunno, The Girl is Mine might be written as being by "Michael Jackson x Paul McCartney" or something. The name "Salyu x Salyu" is a reference to the fact that the songs all use multiple overdubbed Salyus, like she's collaborating with herself. When they did the live shows they hired a group of singers and dressed them up to look like five Salyus.

The Soundbeams album is OK but imo it pales in comparison to the live arrangements.

Don't know much about the subject but Cotton Casino of AMT's previous band Mady Gula BLUE HEAVEN* are pretty sweet

*think that's their proper name.

I hadn't actually heard the original version of that until just now (it's ace) but as a result of far too much delving into the whole alt-idol scene I've spent the last week or two in love with BiS Kaidan's noise punk cover of it. They were a collab effort between the already pretty abrasive original anti-idols BiS (no not that one) and noise band Hijokaidan and put out two whole albums along those lines. There's something about cutting idol vocals with those walls of feedback that really works for me but be warned you may well just find it to be a screaming fucking racket.

And while we're at it I might as well throw in a more recent bit of what I thought was pretty quality shoegaze from RAY. The alternative idol scene is a vast bottomless pit and at least half of it is borderline unlistenable but there's some really interesting stuff going on there.

Otoboke Beaver. Edit: I didn't mention it but this album is fucking amaziing.

Just writing to say I've been seriously obsessed with the opening title track of the LP mentioned in the OP (Tadaima) for 2 years now, despite not investigating further into the artist (or even the album) beyond that.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjS4CyBNkZhR-Ho_D6TIxLgUILBaZtflC

I was first attracted to it cos of the striking surreal comic sleeve art that I saw on someone's Instagram and then I just really got into that one song. It has this brilliantly exciting 'Japan at the dawn of the 80s' peppy preppy newave energy I can't get enough of.  It is very frustrating the albums not on Spotify. Need to get the vinyl eventually, it's so neat looking.

Sin Agog

OK, let's do this. I undeleted my account just because the existence of this thread was eating away at me (it's nothing to do with y'all- this place is just too diverting if anything). To say ta ta, here's a bombardment of wonderful '80s J-Poop and Techno Kayo, from the beautifully ethereal to treacly synthscapes to straightforward, sparky pop to mildly annoying herky-jerky ear-inveiglers.  Cheers to everyone for being so fucking decent!
