Anyone watching this? I'm enjoying it far more than I expected. Never liked Bradley Walsh in anything tbh but he's much more likeable than usual in Blankety Blank.

jobotic

Walsh fake corpsing again though

Butchers Blind

Does he tell one of the contestants that their fanny smells?

"I wouldn't say she doesn't shower often, but when she opens her legs, you can smell her [blank]. What have you got Gareth?"

I really thought you'd need Lily Savage for something like Blankety Blank. Really didn't think Bradley Walsh had the personality / humour

Blofelds Cat

Yeh--as he walks on his sticky little microphone wilts, sniffs the air suspiciously, he dives across to one of the contestants and buries his face in some auld dears crotch and declares "fack me luv, your stench trench fackin reeks like a Grimsby trawlermans hand towel" as part of the Supersnatch Game

Artie Fufkin

I remember watching a porn film back in the day called Soapy Tit Wank, and I always sing that to the theme tune.
I'm high-larious!

Les Dawson ruled when presenting this show. I remember him telling one contestant after a poor answer "I've got to go all the way over there [points at minor celebrities] for that?!?"

jobotic

Ha ha. I can't present that turd of an answer to Liza Goddard

"I wouldn't say she doesn't shower often, but when she opens her legs, you can smell her [blank]."

Contestant: "Cunt."
Walsh: "Gotta be, all day long."

JesusAndYourBush

It's utterly shit.  In the old days (Wogan, Dawson) when the contestants revealed their answers there was a little bit of banter with each one.  Some of the answers were sensible/logical, some were stupid/bizarre, some were rude.  With this new version it gets to the contestants giving their answers and it's BAM - BAM - BAM - BAM - BAM - BAM, there's your 6 answers in a flash, no banter, no humour, not a titter.  When you've got a format and it works don't try to be clever and mess with it, it rarely works.

Glebe

Not seen this but I imagine weary old Walsh is really starting to look his age!

I watched a few Les ones the other year, I imagine there's a lot of verbal gold throughout his run. Ones of the ones I saw had him introducing Matthew Kelly with the words "He's sort of like an enthusiastic mop."

I've always thought Wogan played it as a man who knew he was hosting a crap cheesy game show, whereas Les Dawson played it as a man trapped hosting a crap cheesy game show.

That's it exactly. It was such an inspired way of hosting a game show, to treat the whole thing with utter disdain while giving the impression that you deserve so much better.

As for this new version, I think Walsh does a good job. He sort of presents himself as a slightly baffled stooge who's trying to keep order, which works quite nicely.

At the other end of this scale, I saw last week that they're trying again with Family Fortunes, but it lasts for an hour now. I bet the banter they must be using to stretch that out is excruciating.

JesusAndYourBush

I saw the new Family Fortunes the other day.  It was ok, but nothing special.  In contrast, whenever I see clips of the US version it's always hilarious, but a lot of that is down to the American contestants being a lot madder than our lot, plus the host is excellent.

Does it feature Cuddly Ken snapping a ridiculously thin and long microphone?

If not, fuck off, shove a whole wild badger up your arse.

Speaking of whom- one of the cheap freeview channels was re-running the seldom seen Kenny Everett Video Show, from 1978 (Thames TV). Talk about a time capsule: Christ's Trousers it was dull. The Moody Blues, Yellow Dog, Capt Kremmen etc etc, and only Sid Snot and Hot Gossip to enliven the proceedings. In my memory it was anarchy, with the crew laughing and punk rock... nah.

Oh - and he did a sketch exactly like the Manilow/Nose and the Stewart/Arse ones we've all seen, but with John/Glasses.

Hee! Isn't it appropriate that gilbertharding should contribute to this thread, readers? ( you know, because of his avatar)

Not sure if it deserves its own thread, but I came across the Kenny Everett Video Show last night (albeit initially with the volume turned off, which may make it more interesting), on That's Scotland which seems to pretty much show music videos all the time. It's definitely fascinating as a piece of television, a variety show from a parallel universe - Hot Gossip dancing in a showerroom and Leo Sayer seemed to be singing in a toilet. Not all that funny though, but you can't have everything.

And, I'm tempted to add, real tee-hee-nicky-nacky-noo stuff, puerile and beloved of the Brexiteer/'I blame all them woke snowflakes' mindset.

Perhaps, but I found him hilarious when I was seven. Which sounds like a back–handed compliment, but Everett was fully aware that children loved his rude, violent, silly comedy. Anyone who performs a sketch in which Rod Stewart has a giant inflatable arse, or one where Spider–Man pisses himself, is clearly in tune with what makes children laugh.

And those particular sketches still make me, a middle–aged Corbyn–lovin', Daily Mail–hatin' Remainer, laugh.

The rest of it, as far as his BBC1 tenure went, was just mentioning Joan Collins a lot.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago and they've gone way beyond tedious banter. In between rounds, they brought on a punchbag so one of the contestants could demonstrate his skill at kickboxing. Absolute dogshit.

I saw all of his BBC shows when they were first on, and when they were repeated on UK Gold around 1993-ish I watched them all again and was surprised that I remembered every sketch.  With other shows from the same time, when I'd rewatch them I'd barely remember anything but with Kenny I must have been paying close attention.  And they were just as funny 2nd time around.

Aye - everyone remembers the BBC shows. They were great (I was 11). The Thames stuff, which I was probably on when I was at Scouts, and wouldn't have been allowed to watch anyway... was just awful. If he picked the bands - well, he had shit taste in music. Have a listen to the Chartmusic episode for on-the-nail criticism of Cuddly Ken.
