"Her inside the doors" is watching this hideous, self-indulgent, false luvvie fest, and so it's on in my background. I fucking hate it.

Glebe

Long time since I watched it. Utterly vacuous celeb-fest.

kalowski

I can only imagine they spend hours backstage choosing the anecdotes that are supposed to appear recalled on the spot.

"AHA HA HA HA HA!! NOW! Timothée Chalamet, you have a very unusual hobby, don't you?"

"AHA HA HA HA HA!! NOW! Timothée Chalamet, you have a very unusual hobby, don't you?"

Tim briefly looks totally rumbled, mortified, the look of a man on holiday in Spain realising he has left the oven on, then suddenly remembers

OH THE ANECDOTE! yes, I do graham......

PlanktonSideburns

Gman moves on to talk to a British bake-off, and tim closes his eyes and looks skywards, breathes out

kalowski

"Phoebe Waller Bridge, you once got lost in Cannes, didn't you "
"Well. Yes. I was there with Daniel and we were promoting the new Bond. I'd done a bit of work on the script. We'd been for mussels, Dan utterly loves mussels, do you know? You've worked with him, haven't you? We'd been for mussels, and we had to get to the showing. Well, we asked the waiter, "What's the best way to the cinema" and he thought I'd said "What's the best way to see La Mer?" and gave us directions to the beach. And we went. We were at the beach miles from the show. I think they were waiting for us. And in the end we were given a lift there by a strange Frenchman who lived on the beach with a donkey and a camel. And Dan rode on the donkey and I had the camel. And we arrived just in time and as we trotted, yes, trotted, ha ha, up to the red carpet and everyone's around Dan says, "Don't let anyone see the camel toe". Well, I didn't know WHERE to look!"

Glebe

"NOW! Tom Hiddleston, a little bird told me you have a very naughty habit!"

"Um, yes I do actually!"

AUDIENCE laughs. Robert De Niro smiles. Carey Mulligan takes a sip of wine.

Did Graham Norton used to be edgy and outrageous? I don't remember if he really was or if I was just surprised to hear such rude words on the tele when I was younger. I have vague memories of his previous chat shows being a bit spicy.

Mister Six

He'd show (censored) porn to his guests and such, wouldn't he? Can't keep that up 25 years later with a big grey beard, I suppose.

Twonty Gostelow

He famously usurped Jack Docherty's Channel 5 chat show of course, after covering for him when he was on leave, and never looked back.

And thank God he did too, saving us from this sort of rubbish

Jerzy Bondov

So Graham Norton was amazing, phoning up cunts called like A. Minge or B. J. Lickout, oh hello is Mr Minge there, hu hu hu hu hu, Joan Collins or someone sat there like fucks this, amazing

Just making absolutely sure this is sarcasm?  Jack was great.

I'd prefer 'bitter irony' - I was stroking my beard at the time. Seems most people prefer chat-show hosts who can fake-laugh at anything.

Jack Docherty was one of the channel's early stars but then he went on holiday and this came along: Not The Jack Docherty Show, which is what it was called when Graham Norton was guest hosting. Norton won best newcomer at the 1997 British Comedy Awards for guest hosting The Jack Docherty Show - on a night when he was sat at the same table as Docherty, who had been expecting to win the award.
That's presumably bullshit, right? Docherty had been around for years at that point

And to be fair, he didn't really usurp Jack. Jack had already been trying to get out of it for ages.

I enjoyed how phoned-in it became; from every night, to most nights, to some nights, to a night. And reflected in the set, by the end Jack presenting surrounded by packing crates.

It wasn't a bad show,  just hampered by the lack of guests. Closest we've ever got in the UK to getting that format right though. And everyone seems to ignore that for every time a US show gets someone BIG like Bowie, they have thirty editions where the guests are a news reporter, the lead from a newly launched sitcom that is already likely to be cancelled, and someone you don't know promoting a book you'll never buy.

Nope, entirely true. Odd that they put Jack in that category, but presumably they decided to treat him as a newcomer because it was his first show that was His, rather than part of Absolutely (though being produced by the same company, tsk.)

Fair enough. Was it a media invention then, Norton being a cuckoo in the nest and manipulating his way into favour at Docherty's expense? I'm sure JD was often asked to give his opinions on Norton afterwards and would avoid the subject, but maybe all that was bullshit for the sake of a story.

thr0b

A bit of both. Norton became his regular stand-in - he was already hosting Bring Me The Head Of Light Entertainment, so was a Channel 5 "face" at that point. As Docherty took more and more time off, Norton covered more and more, and became a stand-out.

The show was produced by Absolutely Productions, so if Jack wasn't happy with his stand-in getting more plaudits, I'm sure Norton would've been dropped. As it was, he was picked up for his own show by Channel 4 fairly Sharpish.

I have the perfect clip for you, courtesy of Arthur Matthews: https://youtu.be/wb4a_CLHtBs

If I recall correctly, in addition to all the smut, his Channel 4 show was quite interesting because most of the guests weren't there to plug anything (ooooh, more smut!). Not that I was particularly interested in what Joan Collins or Roger Moore had to say, but at least it wasn't just another part of the press junket cycle for whatever new film or telly show was out.

Malcy

I gave up on it years ago but still watch clips online but nothing recent as it's fucking dreadful. Lee Mack's Kent joke and Billy Connolly during the red chair remain the highlights for me, especially the later. Got a huge laugh out out of that. Norton is a pain in the arse and really wish Jack Docherty had got the gig as mentioned above he was so much better.

Doesn't matter as long as it technically actually happened.

(For those who haven't seen it: Nathan Fielder later released an entire episode of Nathan For You depicting his efforts to manufacture into reality the boring, painstakingly long anecdote that he relates in the clip above.)

Blinder Data

Graham Norton is deservedly top dog in British broadcasting. His chat show is good fun and his Saturday morning show on radio 2 was occasionally very funny. He's miles better than Jonathan Ross or any of his peers.

He makes it look easy - a unique gift.

Love you Graham 😘

Blue Jam

To be fair the UK simply doesn't do chat shows the way the US does. Graham Norton is probably the best we've got.

Jonathan Ross on the other hand... I know he has a reputation for being kind and generous and just so bloody nice, but does that really make up for him being such an inept interviewer?

thr0b

Aye, Norton is great. His nightly Ch4 show was great, even though so much of it was clearly staged.

Jonathan Ross And His Quest For A Toss stopped being any good around fifteen years ago, and was only fleetingly good for around seven years before that. 80s & 90s Ross being quite good and getting Vic & Bob on telly being brilliant.

mothman

Ross's problem (OK, one of them) is the almost creepy need he displays to make out he's like uber best buds with anyone who appears on his show. Norton seems to have avoided that.

But there's also something to be said about the drawing power of the BBC internationally - Ross's show on ITV doesn't get anywhere near the level of guest that his one on the Beeb did, while Norton hit the high notes (metaphorically) as soon as he took over.

up_the_hampipe

Did Parky have the same problem when he moved to ITV?

I last saw Graham Norton's show about three weeks ago. It was an absolute chore to sit through.

Why does every single white male on the telly grow a beard when they're in their 50s?

Whatever happened to Andy Davies? I seem to remember him being on the early episodes of Ross's ITV chat show but then he sort of vanished.
