I'm wondering wtf is going on in his head. I mean, I know loads of footballers are right-wing but this is proper whackjob stuff, and the people defending him are either far right types or conspiracy theorists into QAnon etc. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up going into Holocaust denial at this rate. And now he's saying 'I was just making a point that you can't trust the media'. Well, duh, anyone who supports the Hillsborough Justice Campaign knows this but did he have to do it by retweeting garbage denying a war crime? I read an article about a couple whose son-in-law was shot dead by Russians in the street. They dragged him outside and shot him in the head, and threw a grenade into the family home and burned it down. His mother-in-law was pointing to a patch of blood left behind when he was shot. But apparently it's all fake.

The sakura emoji in Le Tissier's name is apparently a symbol of standing up against authority. Funnily enough, Le Tissier didn't have a problem with authority before COVID, he was perfectly happy to slag off Black Lives Matter and anti-police protests, but he can't see his grandkids (because I think this sparked it off) and all of a sudden he's Julian Assange?

Quote from: Gurke and Hare on April 06, 2022, 10:35:44 AMI mean, Baddiel's a cunt but he's hardly the only one who thought Le Tissier was a great player who should have got more England chances but now thinks he's a wanker is he?

Of course not. I just thought it was funny. Also the 'Unbelievable' video as a piece of work is fucking awful. I thought at the time Baddiel can't have been trying very hard, but nowadays I wonder...

I was amused by this tweet:

Quote from: @tompeckThis will come as a shock to many but actually if you play Championship Manager 94 for the required 28 seasons Matt Le Tissier does usually get sacked as an ambassador for Southampton FC after publicly denying Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

QuoteJoin me on GETTR. https://gettr.com/user/mattletiss7 I'll be interacting more with people over there as it seems a lot less toxic 👍🏼

QuoteJournalists reported extreme content on the platform was prevalent, including racism, antisemitism, and terrorist propaganda... Politico observed the white supremacist Proud Boys organization was being promoted on the platform... Trending topics on the platform on the day of Gettr's beta launch included pro-Trump slogans, as well as hashtags including racist and antisemitic slurs... a study published by the Stanford Internet Observatory found that Gettr has "very few—if any—mechanisms for detecting spam, violent content, pornography, and child exploitation imagery"... The study found sixteen examples of images on Gettr that were flagged by PhotoDNA, an image-identification technology used for detecting illegal content, as "child exploitation imagery"... a quick search turns up a user whose name includes the N-word as well as pro-Nazi content...

Wonderful Butternut

Of course he's on fucking Gettr.

Of course he is.

He can be Graham Linehan's new friend.

Kankurette

I wonder if he'll run into everyone's favourite transphobic Irish comedy writer.

Jesus, first Lovren is revealed to be a fascist and now Le Tissier denies war crimes and joins a far right platform. What next, Theo Walcott eats a baby live on TV? (Incidentally, if you're a Southampton fan, their Reddit is heartbreaking. My dad's mate must be so gutted right now.)

JamesTC

Oh fucking hell, Rickie Lambert is a raving anti-vaccer too. I liked him :(

Kankurette

Yep, found that out on the Saints Reddit. Cunt's gone bananas.

Seeing people with Ukraine flags in their bios defending Le Tissier sure is weird. Cognitive dissonance much?

Just been there and there's a petition to replace Le Tissier from the banner, I suggested former Saint Neil Shipperley as his only crime was public masturbation.

Alan Shearer? Dave Beasant? Franny Benali? He seems like a good sort. (And I think his daughter does some kind of PR thing for Southampton. Kenzie?) Or Sadio Mané, Theo Walcott, VVD, Jose Fonte...

They have, seemingly, settled on Benali, but disappointingly not a picture of him in his moustachioed pomp.

Shearer and Beasant and the others you mentioned don't really qualify as legends or cult heroes - they all belong to someone else. I'd nominate Parhars, or one of the Wallaces.

Kankurette

Le Tissier's now got the fucking Heritage Party leader agreeing with him. Christ on a bike. Aren't they actual Nazis?

There's a joke about Ali Dia now being Southampton's second least embarrassing player.

Quote"My views are my own and always have been, and it's important to take this step today to avoid any confusion," Le Tissier wrote on Twitter.

"I will always remain a fan and supporter of everything Saints. I can, however, see that due to recent events it's important to separate the work I believe in from my relationship with the club."

Chelsea v Real Madrid, aka the Horrible Cunt Derby.

Also Louis van Gaal has the big C.

Memorex MP3

Was Le Tissier paid well when he was with Southampton? He's been such a moron lately I have this image of him being conned into signing really shit deals in the name of loyalty when he could've made drastically more elsewhere.

Edit: if we're to believe him the most he ever got was 4k a week and 2k per goal; Ravanelli was on 42k in 1997

Kankurette

And the first goal of the Horrible Cunt Derby has been scored by a sex pest. As has the second.

As for Le Tissier, I assume he was on high wages but not the ridiculous ones footballers earn now. Wasn't he involved in some kind of betting scam?

He's from Guernsey so probably wasn't short of a bob or two.  And he must have been one of the highest earners of the club.  He was close to moving to Chelsea for a bit and stayed, so he must have been on a fair whack to turn that down, even if he did prefer to stay at Saints.

Quote from: Kankurette on April 05, 2022, 09:33:02 PMImagine being a leftist Saints fan who watched them during the '90s and discovering one of your heroes is...like that. One of my dad's old mates is a hardcore Southampton fan, he used to steward at the Dell and both his kids are fans too and knowing his politics, I can't imagine he's too pleased that Le Tissier is such a tool (and he wasn't a big fan of Lovren, if only because Fonte made Lovren look good and Lovren was nothing without him). That family are the reason why I have a soft spot for Southampton.

I have more family in Southampton than anywhere on earth. My mum's two sisters and her brother all moved there - never been able to work out exactly why and why my mum didn't except that my dad used to go out with one of her sisters - and there are quite a few Saints fans among the kids and grandkids.

We're not particularly close though - last time I was there was in the mid 90s - so I'm not sure exactly what I think. I know that one of my mum's sisters was actually a Communist Party member and her youngest son claims to still be a commie (despite being some sort of business chief). I might ask him. His elder brother is apparently well in with the Saints board though and knows all the players so I suspect he may actually know Matt. Mind you, whatever he says it won't come as much of a shock to me when we met in the early 90s for the first time in years and he told me that his best mate at school had been Graham Roberts. Yes, that Graham Roberts. The one who I'd booed and hated when he'd been playing for Rangers a few years earlier.

Kankurette

I think my dad's mate met Le Tissier back in the day, but not sure.

My mum married my current stepdad in 2016 and the Southampton friends came to the wedding, and we agreed that we would not mention the subject of Ronald Koeman (and Southampton fans can feel vindicated now, he was an utter prick, although he did sign Gueye). It was pretty funny at the time.

ETA: on the subject of Dutch managers, is Ten Hag confirmed for United?

Jockice

Well, the elder brother phoned me up the day before my dad's funeral in 2005 asking for directions. Then he didn't turn up - in fact I don't think any of the Southampton contingent were there, although there had been a couple at my mum's - and the only time I've spoken to him since was when he phoned me (seemingly at random, for no real reason) about five years ago. He's not on Facebook but his wife is so I'm friends on it with her and a few other  family members but I don't really know them well. Funny things families. Of course this has absolutely nothing to do with football even if it means I've always had a soft spot for the Saints. My sister had her first wedding on FA Cup final day 1976 you know. It's just a good job we found a room in the reception hall which had a television in.

Think I saw an article somewhere saying that Mc Laren was coming as his no. 2, so we know all the carpets and carpeting accessories will be in good hands.

Kankurette

The players will have to take turns cleaning out Casper's cage.
