Film podcast recommendations.

Harpo Speaks

Filmspotting might be of interest. One contemporary release reviewed per episode, but in addition they are often doing a season of weekly reviews focusing on a particular director or genre eg a Cassavetes marathon, or a selection of 40s noir etc.

It definitely is, but it's one you need to pick and choose episodes for.  If he's not talking about something you're already interested in, or have some knowledge about, you'll not be swayed.  The best/worst of the year and that kind of stuff is always fun though.

Film Junk is the only one you need to be honest.

Chedney Honks

Debatable, but I seen they got Bond AND the MCU. Both genres.

Are there any good series focussing on a director, movement, genre or films from one country? What Harpo mentioned with Filmspotting sounds the closest thing, but I guess that's only a few episodes for each topic. Haven't listened to this one but Paul Rust and Matt Gourley have a horror podcast called "With Gourley and Rust" that takes you through the main franchises and most recently Jaws (shark films):

QuoteNothing says slasher films and horror franchises more than an easy-listening, cozy-cast by two gentle movie lovers like Matt Gourley and Paul Rust. Join them as they take you through the Jasons, the Michaels, the Freddies, and beyond.

Again, I'd recommend Wrong Reel which has a range of shows, including some based on theme or shared characteristics.

Recent shows include:

The Singing Detective
Late period Orson Welles
Pre-Code Hollywood
Yoshiaki Kawajiri - Animation Legend
The Johnson County War
British Gangster Classics
Jean Cocteau and the Orphic Trilogy
Once Upon A Time In The West
Punk Rock In Cinema
Naughty Nineties Nostalgia
Etc.

Love Smershpod, anyone who enjoys the podcast like me should buy Thunderbook by John Rain.

mothman

Is it any good though? The issues I outlined above don't stop me enjoying the pod on an ep-by-ep basis, but they do make me look askance at the idea of a book by him.

Looking at WR now and searching Kurosawa brings up 8 episodes (cinema of doom, Bushido code etc.) so yeah it probably is close enough to what I'm after. Found a couple of dedicated Kurosawa podcasts too (there must be more like this for other directors with some bad and some hidden gems):

Quote from: High and Low: A Kurosawa PodcastThis is a podcast dedicated to Akira Kurosawa and his contemporaries. Joel and Spencer pair a Kurosawa film with another Japanese film from that same year. Whether or not you're a lover of Mr. Kurosawa, it doesn't matter. They are not film experts. They are friends hanging out and chatting about Japanese movies and James Hong and whatever else comes up.

Quote from:  Sanshiro's Boys - Akira Kurosawa Retrospective Timothy Amatulli & Chris CôtéAn Akira Kurosawa fanatic teams up with an Akira Kurosawa newbie for a casual, chronological look at all of the Japanese master's films.

The first one sounds like an interesting concept, second a classic concept. Inevitably both will be shit.

I'm a bit surprised to see its generally muted reception here, although I haven't listened to any other Bond podcasts yet (I'll check out the recommendations - I'm rewatching all the films with my dad over the next year, so I need all the witty zingers and trivia I can steal! There are certainly episodes where the guest is clearly not very familiar with the film (or Bond in general) and those are a bit boring, but it makes up for it with the side specials. I recently heard the Mrs Doubtfire episode and it had me laughing out loud.

I was a little disappointed that Thunderbook didn't really contain much other than synopses of each movie, with jokes and observations taken verbatim from the podcast, but I haven't finished it yet and I was happy to throw him the ten quid or whatever it was anyway.

TVCream Creamguide Films Commentaries - haven't done one for a while sadly, but a very entertaining and very funny ramble involving Scottish people and an English one interspersing some adroit movie chat in between discussions of Wimpys and impressions of Cosmo and Dibbs.

I ditched Kermode On Film because that young lad Jack whatever his name is that he keeps having on with him really started to get on my tits. I somehow began finding him even more irksome than Simon Mayo.

Don't always agree with 'em but Filmspotting have long been my film podcast guys, to the extent where I'll watch their marathons along with them and won't listen to an episode til I've seen the film first.

mothman

Yeah, the Jack guy. Having to listen to their endless love-ins is a chore. Just fuck already!

Resurrecting this thread to recommend The Important Cinema Club podcast, the work of two Canadian guys which is remarkable for the breadth of the topics covered (eg Chaplin, Miklos Jansco, Sonny Chiba, horror-themed porn) and for their banter being seldom annoying and occasionally even funny.

Unlike most, I really like Kermode, so I gave the episode on the Exorcist a chance; and the sidekick, who watched the Exorcist for the first time, gave such a contrived, try-hard interpretation of the film - "it's about his mental health."

Don't think I'll ever forget it.  I think I have a problem with slightly obtuse readings of the Exorcist because Blatty is seemingly so open about his faith and his beliefs, reading it in any other way than fairly straightforward feels contrived.

I am currently enjoying:

The Arrow Video Podcast - A journalist/director and SFX bloke talk about various Arrow Blu Ray releases and make recommendations of other films based on them and what they have been watching. Very much cult and trashy fair in the main, with a lot of obscure Giallo and Asian/Eastern European films being recommeded

Pure Cinema Podcast - Each episode has both hosts giving their top 5 films on a specific topic. Again quite obscure as they don't want to just discuss the usual films but not as left field as the Arrow one

Films to Be Buried With - fun light podcast where celebs discuss their favourite films. Very much dependant on the guest. Nish Kumar is surprisingly excellent on it, and James Acaster less surprisingly so

Evolution of Horror - Does what it says on the tin. The first series was a 13-episode run through of the slasher sub-genre with various interesting guests discussing specific eras. That's as far as I have got so far

I drifted away from this a while ago, does every other male guest still pick Goodfellas as greatest film of all time?

I dip into this when it's something I'm interested in, sometimes I do find that the louder one (Justin) tends to cut off Will just when he's being interesting, but I guess that the price for it being a handy 30-40 minutes. Also, they got me into Matt Farley and the Motern films. Will is also a good letterboxd account to follow.

I listen to it quite sparingly and haven't noticed that but it is widely regarded as such so it isn't surprising, especially when a lot of them are casual film fans

Crenners

Most beyond Wrong Reel and Projection Booth are quite poor and amateurish. I like the Arrow podcast but seldom interested in the films they cover. I've tried most named above before reading the recs and they're very variable otherwise.

Third Window Films podcast is very good, some great guests, but it's extremely narrow in focus (Third Window Films).

The Pink Smoke is often excellent, especially when Martin Kessler appears, but it can be dry and dull.

I was going to mention this. I've been really enjoying it so far.

It's not particularly technical and is fairly broad but the host is really amiable (sometimes too much, he tends to over-enthusiastically agree with almost everything any of his guests say) but he clearly adores the genre and it's brought a lot of stuff to my attention I hadn't heard of before.

It also makes a nice change from the vocal-fry frat-boy style of horror film podcasts, of which there seems to be thousands.

It does tend to live and die by it's guests though, he has some on who are always engaging and illuminating (Jamie Graham, Anna Bogutskaya and Larushka Ivan-Zadeh are three I always enjoy) and some who I can't really get on with (who I won't name as it's subjective and I don't want to be a dick).

Really good podcast though, particularly enjoyed the episodes based on the TV horror stuff of the 70s like Whistle And I'll Come To You and A Warning To The Curious.

Dr Rock

Maggie Mae Fish, on YouTube does a kind of cinema examination, often through a feminist lens, but not always cinema. Her recent take down of Nazi Sympathizer Hero Of A Thousand Faces fella Joseph Campbell was a delight, as was her explanation of Twin Peaks as it related to Dynasty.

Crenners

Lasted three seconds but it generally can't bear American YouTube vernacular or delivery.

I always enjoy Dan Martin when he is on here, and he is also one of the hosts of the Arrow podcast

Junkfood Cinema is pretty good.. They talk about a genre or subject matter of film, or a specific actor. Usually of the trashier variety of film. One of the hosts wrote the recent film Black Phone

I have discovered recently that I really love listening to people talk about cult films. I must have heard a dozen discussions on Robocop of Evil Dead 2 and it never gets boring

Pure Cinema Podcast is already a new favourite for me, cheers for recommending it

The Edgar Wright featuring one about underrated British horror films is superb, and has made me splash out on a couple Blu-rays. Dangerous for the wallet!

PCP and AVP have bloated my Letterboxd watchlist to ridiculous proportions

dead-ced-dead

My friend and I started a film podcast not so long ago. I know there are strict rules around self-promotion round here, so if people are interested, I can forward a DM to them.

I'm working my way through some of the others named in this thread, but does anyone have recommendations for podcasts specifically similar to The Important Cinema Club? I often don't agree with him, but Will Sloan strikes a great balance when discussing the kind of content I'm looking for (more obscure, high-low topics) without being tiresome like so many film obsessives.

Old Nehamkin

Will Sloan's other podcast Michael and Us is good. I also quite like his reviews on letterboxd. He's a pretty insightful guy I reckon.
