Im after one of these but there are literally 500 trillion of them on the market. Currently looking at the ue boom mini and the sonos 1, although the latter seems quite limited (eg no AirPlay), but I would rather have something that can be permenetly plugged in rather than working from the battery.

Any other suggestions?

I highly recommend Kitsound Boombar 2 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-Rechargeable-Bluetooth-Compatible-Smartphones-Black-Boombar-2/dp/B00JAHBOZ4

I picked it up from Tesco for £50

Sonos is very good, but out of my price range.

I got the Bose soundlink which sits in a recharging cradle. My first choice was the sony srs x5 though but it was a tad too big. Both are around the 140 mark but do sound incredible for their size.

I've got a Jabra Solemate which is pretty impressive.  My mate has one of the smaller Jawbone speakers, which I think may be better, annoyingly.

Their both quite small too, but go very loud.

The only thing with these speakers, and I've seen it on most of them, is that the intervals on the volume are too big, and even the lowest volume level before it mutes is FUCKING LOUD.  Not always easy to have a quiet listen to something on these things.

Puffin Chunks

I have a Bose SoundLink Mini and its sound is absolutely exceptional... hard to believe given its size.

It sits in a charging dock (so plugged in) and I can just pick it up and take it with me if I want it out and about.

May be a bit pricier than you're looking for though.

The Bose one looks good, but is the extra £100 quid over the ue boom mini justified? I could spend that additional £100 on sweets, drugs or a quality facial.

My girlfriend got me a red Jambox Mini, which looks like one of those "style over substance" things, but actually gives great quality playback (with very good bass, considering its size), has a good battery life and makes a great noise when you turn it on. Heard one of the bigger Jamboxes and that was even better.

just seen these in a magazine (how quaint), cambridge audio used to be good shit at one time didn't they?

http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/products/wireless-speakers/g2

£99 there - but you can get them for £79 if you shop around it seems.

edit... and this is what barrie strutt had to say about them

QuoteBarrie Strutt

"It is certainly a wonderful piece of kit. I have a Cambridge system situated in our sitting room where music is played everyday. I have a a collection of jazz specialising in hard bop; not an enthusiasm shared by my wife! The G2 enables me to take my IPod collection with me anywhere."

thank you barrie strutt.

I went to a shop (how even quainter), tried loads of these and came away with a Cambridge audio Go, it was noticeably finer sounding than any of the other offerings, including those much pricier.

is that the version2 one?

that one has 18hrs battery life, worth the extra 20 quid for that i reckon. what's it like a low volumes, it's not one of these things that has STILL TOO LOUD as it's lowest setting is it?

sorry for asking you questions, i've tried to find barrie strutt, but the bugger seems to be hiding or listening to hard bop, you know what barrie is like.

I picked up a UE mini boom for £50 yesterday. Was initial shocked to see how small it was actually was - sits easy in the palm of your hand like a fresh puppy. Sound quality is brilliant though. Not massively bassy obviously but crystal clear and not tinny at all. Good enough for me, although airplay seems a bit flaky.

No, it's the version 1, there was no version 2 when I bought it - that came out about a week later of course.  No problem with low volume, it goes right down to whisper quiet and the steps up and down are small.

I'm also pondering getting one of these for the bedroom, but 200 quid is kind of pricey for a clock radio.

Cambridge Audio Minx Go

After some extensive research I got this from Richer Sounds for £90. I've taken it on holiday with me and its a great little system. What Hi-Fi said its the best speaker in its price range. Theres plenty of positive reviews out there.

I've got Harmon Soundsticks. They look really lovely and I think were designed by Jony Ive at Apple. Apple bank rolled their development but apparently had a major fall out with Harmon and I don't think they even sell them at the Apple store anymore. With the bass fully cranked up they're really impressive sounding. They seem to vary in price quite a bit depending on where you buy them from.

I'm looking for one of these for a bedside table, which I can charge my phone off of overnight - speaker plugged in the mains - which would also be good for moving to a shelf in the bathroom each morning.

I see the Minx Go is currently cheap, but can you not charge your phone off those?

Anyone have any experience with the JBL Charge 2?  The red one is only £70 on Amazon, while the other colours cost considerably more.

The Minx Go has a USB port in the back that you can charge things from when it's plugged in to the mains

PaulTMA

Ah bugger it, I went for the JBL.  They're a good brand anyway and it looks nice.

Cambridge Audio is owned (mostly) by the bloke who owns Richer Sounds. That doesn't make their products any worse (for the most part, they are pretty good, IMO) but something to bear in mind when the overly friendly Richer Sounds salesperson keeps pushing you in their direction.
