Y'know uTorrent?  That thing we all use to steal movies, music and software?  It's only gone and stolen from us as well!

http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/6/8161251/utorrents-secret-bitcoin-miner-adware-malware

Now.  I have a Mac, I don't use Bitcoins and don't really have anything interesting on my computer at all.  Am I in trouble?

Thursday

This is a bit shit of them, but I'm probably too lazy to start using a different torrent client.

Junglist

Downgrade to 2.2.1, its the best version and the majority use it.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Yeah I've noticed it getting cuntier and cuntier with each update.

WHY DO THEY HAVE TO KEEP MUCKING ABOUT WITH THINGS

it's been getting worse and worse hasn't it, so like you I switched to 2.2.1 a few months back

Since then however I've switched to qBittorrent which is as lightweight and has all the same features I use in utorrent

I highly recommend it

kittens

how do i find/remove this bad bastard

Big Jack McBastard

JOiF has the right idea qbitorrent is the one to go for, or at a push Transmission.

utorrent went to shit as soon as they started putting in Facebook and Twitter buttons. cos you want your rampant porn piracy tied to your social media don't cha?

Where are you even getting working torrents from now? Seems like everywhere is shut down or fake now.

Pirate Bay or private trackers.  What are you after?

'My mate' says you could also use the Foxy Proxy addon for Firefox, nip over to a list site like so:

http://www.freeproxylists.net/

http://nntime.com/proxy-country/

HE then advises you to take an IP of your choice (don't forget the port number), right-click it's icon button, select 'Options' and then 'Add New Proxy' copy/paste the IP and port numbers to the textboxes and activate it (wee foxhead goes blue when the proxy is in use, it spins when it's working) and provided you've picked an active one, all those 'blocked' torrent sites are back once again free and easy, apparently.

You'll need to get a new proxy IP every now and then and some will already be closed off because some terrible people and I've no idea who guvnor, abuse them, allegedly.

They can also be used to fool sites like megaupload (or whatever the equivalent is) into letting you download more than one file at once, supposedly.

Blimey! I'm on version 2.0.2. Never occurred to me to update it. Well I won't bother now either!

I would add that if this thing is mining Litecoin then it's not exactly malware (i.e obtrusively accessing your PC files/OS) but it would most likely keep your CPU running hard by doing the mathematical computation required for mining.

So it'll probably result in your CPU running hotter than it normally would and thus wear out your CPU fan faster than the usual million hours or whatever it's tested to do, and wasting processing power that could be used by the other programs on your PC.

Actually it's a really shitty thing to do. I dunno why I bothered typing this.

I switched to Transmission a long time ago and couldn't be happier.

Also, thanks to everyone who PM'd me to pass on information from their friends about what torrent sites are still working and how to access them. It's good to know what not to do sometimes, you know?

It really is malware. Mining Bitcoin isn't financially viable as the electricity it uses costs more than the resulting Bitcoin. So it costs you money if you get infected by it.

rarbg, pirate bay and kickass still going strong, just use Opera and tick "Opera Turbo" to use their free SSL VPN to open up access from UK ISPs

I'm also in Torrentshack and Torrentbytes in terms of private trackers

Torrentshack seems like it could disappear any second (multiple changes of domain, down for a while, web bills unpaid)

I haven't tried Torrentbytes for a while but in it's heyday that site was awesome

I was wondering what you should do if the ISP is throttling things like Bittorrent and anything else it seems,

I've heard you should use a VPN, but the free services seem to block P2P

Is this something that you can sort out on Opera?

As is probably clear from this message I don't really know what I'm talking about- but my internet's been very slow for the last few months and I think it is to do with this,

Thank you

Puce Moment

I'm using qBittorrent and find it excellent.

I am also using kickasstorrents and piratebay every day. Nothing much has changed there - except kickass has been getting the hump with people using adblocker and has started to prevent usability.

Hank Venture

Is that what that shitty ad is?

How do you switch to another client/downgrade without losing your torrents? Asking for a friend.

My friend installed this and it downgraded automatically whilst keeping all the torrents. A lot less hassle than they expected.

VPN should take care of that, but having recently tried VPN from one of the better providers, it was underwhelming to be honest

Performance was at times excellent, at times terrible, it also drained the CPU on the "not that shitty" PC I use for Bittorrent and made the PC unusable after a while downloading/seeding

If it disconnects without you realising, then you're back to using your ISP connection, and I found the auto-reconnect less than reliable

They did provide an alternative to VPN with a proxy, and whilst that might hide your actual IP, it wouldn't hide your traffic type from your ISP looking to shape it

I suggest you change ISP, I've had zero shaping problems with Virgin and find their 150mb product offensively fast
