Heinous Rwanda deportations go ahead

Guardian claims another deportation flight to Rwanda is planned in the next few weeks, despite the full high court hearing to examine the government's Rwanda plans not beginning until 19 July.

Yolande Makolo, a spokesman for the Rwandan Government, said the country only had one hostel with 200 spaces that was "ready" to receive migrants from the UK.

Other facilities were "in the planning stage" but with no contracts agreed, she told a press briefing on Friday, despite previous claims by Boris Johnson and other ministers that thousands of asylum seekers would be processed in the country.

Officials also said Rwanda was not a "prison state" and that there was nothing they could do to stop migrants leaving and attempting new journeys back to the UK.

UK ministers who backed sending asylum seekers to Rwanda were warned by their own adviser that its government tortures and kills political opponents.

The warning came weeks before the British government tried to send asylum seekers to the African nation.

The adviser raised concerns about the tone and accuracy of an official note on Rwanda's human rights record...

Last month the High Court heard that Whitehall officials had initially excluded Rwanda on human rights grounds from the list of potential partners for asylum transfers.

The court was told that Dominic Raab, the then-foreign secretary, had been warned that a deal with Rwanda would force the UK to constrain what it said to the nation about its record...

On whether Rwanda is a safe country, here's a reminder of what the court ruled: "The result is that the High Court's decision that Rwanda was a safe third country is reversed [BBC's own italics] and that unless and until the deficiencies in its asylum processes are corrected removal of asylum-seekers to Rwanda will be unlawful."
