Quote from: bgmnts on August 13, 2022, 01:54:04 PMWell i'm referring to the ostensibly centrists like Riley and Baddiel and the like. They are essentially tories sure I suppose.
I don't think Baddiel is a Tory but Riley almost certainly is.

idunnosomename

David Baddiel is simply a complete fucking idiot

edit:
actually no sorry that takes away his agency from him bullying a black footballer and never apologising to him personally. Jason Lee's career was genuinely hurt by his fucking chant on the national broadcaster, and does he care? no. he just gets his shitty kids books bought up by national libraries because hes fucking david baddiel who did wembley once. ahhh.

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

well screeching about antisemitism in the labour party made jeremy corbyn go away, so screeching about antisemitism in the civil service will make it easier to dismantle what public sector jobs are left and turn it all over to private consulting firms. british jewry will love that because they love business so much

Zero Gravitas

the socialism of fools they say, which means it has a good chance of working.

Poirots BigGarlickyCorpse

seriously though every time I see the word "Jewry" I immediately associate its use with Nazis

Zero Gravitas

Conjures images of well-loved accordions for me.

570 Conservative members polled

QuoteSome 2% of Tory members (who chose Truss) cited race or ethnicity as a reason for supporting Truss and not Sunak

What a lovely bunch of people. And that's just those who were prepared to admit it as a reason in the survey.

Most Tory members would have preferred Johnson than Truss or Sunak.

QuoteWhen offered the choice of Johnson still being in No 10, or Truss taking over, some 63% of Tory members said they would prefer Johnson to be still in charge against 22% who wanted Truss. Even more starkly, 68% said they would prefer to still have Johnson than see him replaced by Sunak, who was preferred by just 19%.

The poll found that almost three in ten of the Tory electorate (29%) had already voted. Some 47% said they would definitely be voting for the candidate they had opted for. Just 19% said they had yet to make up their mind.

Whether they are tories or not is immaterial. They are willing tools of the tories to prevent progressive change.

It is the centrists that allow these cunts to stay in power always

i imagine that a certain generation of entertainers have effectively become conservatives, but could never support the party itself due to the remembered cultural negativity of e.g.Thatcher.  There's a (slightly) younger generation that could be more easily described as Cameronites and while they're usually still 'shy tories' the cultural queasiness isn't quite as pronounced.  I suspect Baddiel is the former and Riley is the latter.

They're both wealthy, elite educated (I assume Riley is Oxbridge?), probably own property (their own and probably more) and are largely insulated from the effects of government policy.  Their material interests are firmly stacked up on the side of the conservatives, anything else is an almost hobby-like engagement.  Which is why these people hold such importance in an ephemeral platform like Twitter.

Yeah, the only time I've heard it used in real life was by an old woman at an anti-Iraq War protest I went to. I got chatting to her and out of the blue, she said something about world Jewry, I had to ask her to repeat herself as I didn't catch it, and she blamed Jews for Iraq. Good thing I hadn't converted then, it was awkward enough.

idunnosomename

Yeah seems both schools Riley went to are about 4k per term. Then got into Oriel Oxford and considered a job in finance. Clearly not short of money

The Westminster government civil service remains huge in the UK, and has grown considerably under Tory rule. Truss's noises aren't a serious threat to this, because the Tories and the service both remain committed to centralisation above much else.

It can (and will) solve every single problem we have, as long as we dive headlong into developing it ASAP. Infinite energy ends all human suffering. Simple as that.

Ah man now I feel bad for not backing infinite energy or wanting to end all human suffering

Feel like pure shit wish I could sell bottled Chernobyl dust and make us all friends again

It's funny how when you stare at Ted Rogers for long enough he starts looking completely different.

Amazon's been doing well out of Sunak's business relief schemes:

QuoteAmazon could be off the hook for tax in the UK for at least two more years after benefiting from reliefs brought in by Rishi Sunak during the pandemic, a report suggests.

The research from the Fair Tax Foundation indicates that the US tech company claimed more than £800m in capital allowances – business expenses that can be offset against profits – in 2021, £500m more than in 2020.

The value of these allowances was boosted largely thanks to the "super-deduction" scheme for businesses that invest in infrastructure, which was introduced by the current prime ministerial candidate Sunak when he was chancellor last year.

Under the scheme, from 1 April 2021 until 31 March 2023, companies are able to claim allowances equivalent to 30% more than the value of investment in new plant and machinery and up to half the value of further investments in technology that forms parts of buildings, for example air conditioning.

As a result Amazon enjoyed a £75m discount on its tax bill for the year to December 2021, according to the foundation, resulting in Amazon having no tax to pay in 2021. It has already set aside almost £66m against its tax bill for next year based on an estimated £250m of trading losses from 2021.

If the company spends a similar amount on equipment for its warehouses this year, that number will rise again, so that Amazon would have to make profits of more than £600m in the UK before it paid corporation tax this year or next...

Sunak also wants to set up charter cities: https://www.thenational.scot/politics/20267661.rishi-sunaks-beloved-charter-cities-pose-huge-threat-democracy/

Yeah, totally. Completely overstated

Nuclear is totally safe and anyone who says otherwise is fearmongering

Only another 10,000 years and these places won't kill anyone who tries to live in them.

Still, that's probably just collateral damage isn't it?

Paul Calf

"Oh, but Three Mile Island was 43 years ago. Nuclear safety has advanced massively since then!"

"Oh, but Chernobyl was 36 years ago. Nuclear safety has advanced massively since then!"

"Oh, but Fukushima was 11 years ago. Nuclear safety has advanced massively since then!"

Still, at least we won't be leaving huge caches of deadly rocks stored underground for future species to discover.

Crenners

Longer term, there are much safer, much more preferable alternatives but we will unfortunately never have the opportunity to put that in infrastructure in place without nuclear power.

lol what makes them think she'll be boxing for the EU's corner. And that she's in any way working class? She did PPE at Oxford because her dad is a professor ffs

Kankurette

The Tories and their mouthpieces live in a parallel universe where they are somehow not the elite.

Fambo Number Mive

I presume Sunak's boxing gloves and shorts are gold coloured in a reference to how rich he is. Not sure if there is any reference in Liz Truss' earrings being triangles.

Correction - once we are firmly committed to nuclear power, and industries are profiting from it, there will be no more infrastructure towards safer, more preferable alternatives.

jobotic

Nuclear power run by private companies that have to cut every corner to generate profit for shareholders.

No way that could go wrong. It'll be like the railways except we'll all die.
