Boris Johnson is in the final fortnight of his premiership and, according to Downing Street, later today he will be meeting the chief executive, Ilan Gur, and the chair, Matt Clifford, of the new UK Advanced Research and Invention Agency (Aria). This is the body set up to fund high-risk scientific research. It is an odd choice for a legacy visit because Aria was only established because of pressure from Dominic Cummings, who was Johnson's chief adviser in No 10 until he left to become one of the most vocal, and effective, campaigners for Johnson's removal from office.

What is the point of Gur and Clifford spending time meeting with Johnson when  Johnson is leaving office in two weeks and is spending most of his time on holiday?

Also, it feels like Johnson has had more time off in these past couple of months than most workers in the UK have in a year. The sheer hypocrisy of Rees Mogg and Truss who claim that ordinary British people aren't grafting enough being fine with the Prime Minister taking so much time off while still in office. And the Johnson backing Twitter accounts being fine with it too.

Boris Johnson's government has quietly published details of an "election power grab" to neuter the UK's elections watchdog and undermine its independence.

In the government's first act since the Prime Minister returned from his second holiday of the summer, it set out details of the proposals, branded "extremely dangerous" by the chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life when they were first suggested.

The publication comes just months after the Electoral Commission found the Conservative Party had broken electoral law over the funding of Boris Johnson's Downing Street flat refurbishment.

New draft proposals would strip the Commission of the power to bring its own criminal prosecutions for breaches of election law.

And they would impose a duty on the body to follow the government's "priorities", despite claiming it would not "interfere" with the governance of the body or its operational independence.

It reads: "The statement seeks to ensure greater accountability to the UK Parliament on how the Electoral Commission discharges its functions."

And the document says the Commission should "support the government's delivery of legitimate executive priorities"...

Outgoing UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said households "have to endure the cost-of-living crisis" to counter Russian aggression during a visit to Ukraine.

Mr Johnson said the West must "stay the course" on Ukraine despite rising living costs, driven by the war.

He said while energy bills were high "the people of Ukraine are paying in their blood" for Russia's "evils".

He visited Ukraine unannounced and was given the Legion of Honour.

The prime minister also announced a further £54m military support package for Ukraine.

So he can announce military support for Ukraine despite being a caretaker PM but not help with the cost of living?

We'd have been in a much better state had they not shuttered up the Rough storage plant owned by Centrica. At one point it was seen as important from a national security pov as it alone could sustain about 7 days worth of gas.

The company I used to work for built the metering/nomination system for that facility and in 2017 they had big plans for adding new business rules and storage products. I ended up rewriting the allocation algorithm and attending site testing but they surveyed the site and decided to put it all in the bin so it never went live.
