Quote from: Tony Yeboah on May 22, 2024, 12:20:15 PMJustin Moorhouse is very funny and indiscreet on the latest release. Especially when critiquing Paddy McGuinness' stand-up and John Savident's luvvie credentials.

Came to say very much the same thing. Best guest in some while. Especially enjoyed the Vimto ad story near the start. Then rounded off the end with a fun self deprecating massage tale.

Listening to the Justin Moorhouse episode, and there's a reference at the beginning from Herring anout the episode with Neil Fitzmaurice where some stuff had to be cut out about Peter Kay/Phoenix Nights.
Did we ever find out what was actually said/removed?  Assume a bootleg never appeared anywhere?

I was there, and some one else posted the details on this forum at the time, but it was basically about Kay secretly recording people so he could use the conversations to get material. The worst example was attending an AA meeting.

Twilkes

Clip from a Bob Mortimer episode - was this not the one he drove up hours for to replace Bill Bailey, and was meant to be not recorded?

I was 100% sure you'd be mistaken but you're surely right. How strange.

Treasure though. What a fucking brilliant 10 minutes. Best RHLSTP in absolutely years.

"Upgrade!"

"farmland"

"could you tell me about a Chris that's important to you?"

What a wonderful guest. And Rich seems so relaxed and happy. Beautiful chemistry.

Obviously more would be nice but I'm glad even to have this. I wonder what the real reason might be for non-release?

Snrub

I think the plan always was that the one in Hull on tour in March was the one that was not going be released - this one was at the LST in January.

AFAIK, Bob didn't want the second one to be released, simply because it was only a couple of months since he'd last done one and liked the idea of a more relaxed chat that only existed in the moment rather than anything sinister.

Mobbd

Ah, I see.

In any event, this one is on the main audio feed now.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

The whole chat with Bob is great, as usual, but my favourite bit is towards the end when...

Spoiler alert
... he suddenly realises he's a little bit drunk. There's just something so gleeful about the way he announces it while in the middle of telling a story about his cat's dental problems.

I love Bob.

Not strictly a RHLSTP although on same feed, his latest book club podcast with Joel Morris is pretty darn worth a listen. It's about the mechanics of comedy writing which Morris seems have made amusing and informative as well as being the first book club one I have felt inclined to download in a while.

Magnum Valentino

Joel's book's really good by the way

If you do, there's a thread on Morris' book :D

Cheers. Popped over to the thread and have downloaded the audiobook.

Watching Ball Show in Cambridge tonight if any CaBers happen to be in residence. I am the fat bald nervous man on his phone whose clothes don't fit

Add a beard and you've just described a typical RHLSTP audience.

Ade Edmondson on 30 Sept should be a good one.

He's sometimes an odd one, similar to Matt Le Blanc I've often found him less engaging as an interviewee than as his characters, although I would note that Matt Le Blanc had only one character.

Glad that Herring is still getting some big old names though.

Utter Shit

Yeah I listened to his Desert Island Discs a while back and he comes across as quite a serious guy. At times he seems a bit embarrassed by his back catalogue, like it's beneath him (this could be a total misinterpretation on my part, he's never said anything directly). I know he's said before that when he started out he had no intention of going into comedy, he comes across like he'd much rather be a respected dramatic actor.

Still should be good though, he's able to tell the stories that Rik no longer can. FUCK just realised what a fantastic guest Rik Mayall would have been on RHLSTP. Shite.

Mobbd

The recent Rob Brydon chat was very enjoyable.

At first I assumed it was a RETRO, so I ignored it, but I'm glad I caught my error.

Lots of funny Coogs impressions, great Paul McCartney anecdote, cheekiness about Rich's lack of success, etc etc. Reccommended.

I got more of a vibe that he just hates talking about it as he's done it so much. And as he says, The Young Ones was about 14 weeks of his life 40 years ago and he hasn't watched it since it went out, so it can get a bit annoying for him when people still ask him about it. I think he just wants to talk about the stuff other than what he's best-known for but naturally, the best-known stuff is what people want to talk about.

Pranet

I have a memory of him on some ITV late night show, back when they did 24 hour tv with new stuff on it, so you can imagine how long ago that was. It was iirc a show where the guest talked about their favourite books. And back then he was saying things like, I want to put all this comedy nonsense behind me, I mainly like ready clever books with lots of hard words in them. I don't think he feels like that all the time at all, but it seems like that feeling has always been there, off and on.

Snrub

Yeah the Brydon one was great. For some reason for years I'd take against him as a person (always thought he was a superb performer) but since listening to the Brydon & pod I was wrong and he's very good in conversation

Not heard it yet but thought I'd flag up since I know a lot of people skip them that the Gibbons Brothers are on this week's Book Club talking about Partridge

This isn't bad. Could have been better. Nothing revelatory but holy shit its the Gibbons. I don't know if they do many interviews?

There was some funny back-and-forth about the Gibbons and Rich being the brains behind Partridge but Rich could have pushed this a bit more. Probably would have done on mainline RHLSTP.

Herring didn't bring up being the creator of Partridge with Iannucci when they discussed him, and I got the impression that he thought the joke was a bit tired and played out, which now I type it, when referring to Herring's output, clearly makes absolutely no sense.

So it could be that he avoided it because when he had brought it up with Coogan previously he got a bit of a spiky response.

However this time it was the boys who brought it up, and he was obviously happy to join in.

Peter Serafinowicz is the RHLSTP guest on 24th September.

I too was low-key thrilled. These guys really were integral to the Partridge renaissance and thus, to much of my favourite comedy for the past 15-odd (and I mean odd) years. Yet they can't even get a second series ("please give me a second series") of their rather good Witchfinder sitcom. They sounded modest, normal and nice. Hadn't realised that they're twin Gibbons. Wish I had a twin to punch up my bad writing.

I guess they're not exactly household names despite what they do. But those of us who know, know.

Epic Bisto

Just listening to the Bob Mortimer ep. Top notch OOPGRADE and so many one-liners.

"Ooh she's a mooky fooker!"

Next stop is the Gibbons Bros ep.
