From Warming Up, yesterday:

QuoteI am starting to wonder how long it can all go on - there's no plans to stop in the short term, especially whilst I have two mortgages to pay. It feels like interest is waining a little bit - it's tougher to get a crowd on Mondays post-Covid and downloads are down a bit (though they've changed the way they measure them). Tonight we had a stellar line-up of Doon Mackichan and Fern Brady but the theatre was only a little more than a quarter full and some of the upcoming ones, admittedly where not all guests have been announced, are selling very slowly.

Those hundred or so people tonight were excellent, but the audience is really an extra character in this podcast and are, I believe, the reason we get such good anecdotes and revelations from the guests. The atmosphere is so great that people open up and funny people thrive on laughs. I could go back to doing the shows without an audience, as I did in lockdown, but that would be a shame.

Quote from: Mr Trumpet on October 08, 2024, 11:22:25 AMI liked him in Darkplace. But his book about action B-movies is actually one of the worst things I've ever read.

Even before all the Linehan-endorsing shite, I realised I had grown weary of him when he popped up in one of those recent Wes Anderson Roald Dahl things for Netflix and really pissed all over it.

Ralph Fiennes shouldn't have to share the screen with Dean Lerner.

lauraxsynthesis

That's a shame so few folks came on Monday. I would have been there but I didn't have a dogsitter that night.

Mobbd

I know nothing of the Exploding Heads but I believe they're popular on CaB.

They're on this week's episode: https://shows.acast.com/rhlstp/episodes/rhlstp-532-exploding-heads

Hooray!

buntyman

I didn't know of them either but I had to bail on the episode pretty early on as the fake phone call was a bit too unfunny for my taste.

That'll explain 4 minutes of ad reads at the beginning and about the same in the middle of recent episodes then. JESUS

Huxwell

I've not read any of his stuff in about a year, why does he have 2 mortgages?

Are falling attendances and lower listening figures not the same thing that's affecting everyone because there's just too much content out there?  I used to listen to every RHLSTP even when I didn't know who the guest was because there was usually something of interest to them.  But now even RH himself has his podcast, his book club, his stone clearing, self playing snooker....  Then there's every single other person with a modicum of fame launching their own podcasts in competition.  It's madness  at the moment, there's only a certain amount of time in a day when I am awake and something has to give, to the point where it all gives and you just miss all out on all of it.

That's absolutely got to be part of it. I listened to the Buxton one the other day, and don't get me wrong I enjoyed it, but given he's been on the pod more than most other guests, I didn't rush to listen to it and the convo itself was fine but unless I'd read the chat on here about social media I'm not sure I could remember a single thing about it. RHLSTP and Rich are in a bit of an odd spot in that most of the time the big hitters (in comedy at least) have been on loads now, and because of the mass amounts of content I'm more likely to skip the newbies - also as generally Rich doesn't have much history with them. I know that is kind of be default, but in the old days he'd occasionally stoke up a fake online beef with them eg Ed Gamble. The real joy these days are probably the established non-comedy guests who have been around a while but not done a RHLSTP before eg Paul Heaton.

The podcast has probably peaked - and I mean that in terms of listeners - but I think it can probably amble on for a while. I'd wager RHLSTP probably holds its own reasonably well being a pretty old brand for a podcast now, and other comedy pods that have either bigger agencies or production companies and actual money behind them.

They moved house but not sold the old one yet. No viewings for a while so it's probably overpriced for what/where it is.

Is it odd that I know more about the Herrings' lives than my parents know about me and my children.

And I do sometimes wonder what doesn't make it into the blog...

Agree. I stuck around for maybe 25 minutes. It just wasn't funny enough and I also hate sport.

I decided to listen to the Benjamin Partridge one instead. I'm glad I did! I'd listened to a couple of Beef and Dairy Network episodes and I truly admire the craft but it never made it into my roster of regular pods. I didn't even know he was one of the Three Bean Salad guys, so little did I know about the man himself. He was brilliant on RHLSTP - really witty good company, great chemistry with Rich.

If people haven't listened to BP's episode yet (I know some of you have, I read the posts!) I recommend it. Especially the second half (I'd say it takes a while to warm up but it really gets there). An emergency question led to a brilliant, brilliant story about a dead fox. Really weird and funny and good.

Twilkes

He's sure spunking them out recently - Fred MacAuley's is great, albeit with an oddly-placed advert for the Department for Work & Pensions at the beginning.

Twilkes

And Tommy Cannon today - another comedian that could legitimately write a book called 'Can I Have My Ball Back?' [notmygag]

Quote from: There Be Rumblings on October 08, 2024, 06:38:26 PMJust always seems so desperate to be taken seriously.

There was something recently where they asked him his top ten films and it was all Bergman and Kurosawa and Malick and Godard and Welles, but no, not the ones you've probably heard of, it's the other ones I like. Because I'm an intellectual filmmaker.

Then you see his actual output and it's travelling to somewhere basic like Brussels with Rob Beckett and sniggering at Belgians for having their coffee a slightly different way.

lol undergrad showoff taste. love bergman and tarkovsky and all that but come on i find it so sus when you're PERSONAL faves are in every artsy top ten list ever made

Stinky Lomax

The correct Personal Faves Top Ten list is: Back To The Future, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Terminator, Die Hard, Aliens, Predator, Robocop, A Goofy Movie, Face/Off and Tremors. Will accept Labyrinth in place of AGM.

GoblinAhFuckScary

not to come off as an anti-intellectual though! love all the things just think ayoade is a pretentious bore

Stinky Lomax

Yeah, totally. I love Citizen Kane and Badlands and all that, but I couldn't watch them once a week every week for the rest of my life, which I think is the true criterion for a favourite movies list.

The Bumlord

I couldn't make it through the opening scenes of Citizen Kane. That fucking voiceover. Shut up!

Stinky Lomax

Anti-intellectual, eh? *attacks with sugar-glass pint*

How many films I wonder have you sat through before it was made, it's a victim of its own succes, so many movies copied it's innovations that you now take them for granted

Had the same reaction to Paul Heaton. It worked that Herring isn't a gushing music fan and doubt many interviewers would get into a crisp discussion.

In contrast the one with Al Murray was dull and there wasn't much left to say after his previous appearances.

I thought he was OK this time, but yeah he's such a dad. All his war machinery and that. His Churchill voice was funny.

I really didn't care for his first appearance at LST. He talked about current politics like a pub bore. A complete waste of stage.

Hi Richard.

TheCurrencySusan

The Tommy Cannon one was quite nice. It saw Richard in "respectful" mode and he (more-or-less) just let Tommy give his reminiscences. Nothing major about the falling-out with Bobby, although it was alluded to a lot (including by Tommy himself).
