Worried about Derek

I didn't watch Derek when it was broadcast.  At the time I was becoming less and less enamoured with Gervais what with his sneery face and smug attitude.  Watch a sitcom starring him as somebody with learning difficulties?  Don't think so.  Now though, even though my dislike of him has vastly increased, a morbid desire to see what it was actually like prompted me to watch the trailer.  Good Lord.  Does he keep this up the whole way through, the gurning mouth with the lower jaw thrust out?  This looks like being hard work.  A rough fuckin' ride.  Wish me luck!

Robot Dog is a cultural landmark. It was really a game changing moment.

You know nothing of hell. Nothing.

There were some threads about Derke on here way back when it aired that went on for like 150 pages, wasn't there? I can remember seeing someone photoshop together some action figures of its cast, with packaging covered in barely legible English, and laughing like an idiot. Does anyone else remember those? I'd love to see them again.

You solve the Lament Configuration puzzle box.

You open your eyes.

You are in a rundown care home.

You are immediately wrestled to the threadbare carpet by a squat man with a severe haircut and a jaw that could open tins.

"'E likes this," the man grunts close to your ear. "If he didn't, he wouldn't let me to do it."

You struggle and yell for help from the nearby care home attendant but she shrugs. "It's his domain, and we are mere servants to his will. Go limp and he'll get bored eventually."

"That's my cue to enter," growls a bearded sex pest pickled in cheap ale. He is smiling but that smile doesn't reach his eyes.

A dog bounds over. It is made of tarnished steel and has tea strainers for eyes.

You pray for Pinhead.

Don't worry, there are plenty of moments when he takes a well-earned rest from doing it and starts slipping back into Ricky Gervais for a moment. Then he remembers he's supposed to be doing a character and juts his jaw out at the end of the sentence / kindness lesson.

The bit where our thick-as-pigshit kind hero casually reveals that he's a bit skeptical of the whole religion business right after his dad dies and later DESTROYS a PRIEST with REASON and LOGIC in the Christmas special.

It's absolutely fascinating. A detailed psychological insight into the mind of the Gervais, revealing absolutely nothing about anything else whatsoever. The widest artistic gap between what the author thinks it is, and what it actually is, in human history. And just when you think it can't get any worse, it does. And then again.

My personal highlight is the care home residents acting out the lyrics to Radiohead's 'Bones' in a hilariously direct way. Played completely straight.

Jerzy Bondov

Derek doesn't actually have learning difficulties. Otherwise the show would be extremely tasteless.

Midas

He's just really, really kind

Those action figures are funnier than any episode of Derke will ever be.
