Quote from: neveragain on September 02, 2024, 05:58:51 PMI watched an episode of Grace and Favour on the That's TV channel. Dear Christ... Never again. And that's the first time I have taken my name in vain, so you know it was dreadful.

Mrs Slocombe's pussy joke of the week was - for context, she was redecorating her home - "My pussy was right in my drawers." This annoyed me because it isn't even a joke. What's the funny double meaning? Mrs Slocombe's private parts could be found in her knickers?
surely the joke there is that the double entendre is on "drawers" rather than "pussy". meaning both parts of furniture and also her knickers.

either subversive or possibly a sign you shouldn't be writing this shit anymore because you've run out of jokes

Yeah, it does work like that but it's worth mentioning that in the original series, when Mrs Slocombe talked about her pussy, there wasn't always a double entendre and what was being said only made sense in relation to a cat.

Bad Ambassador

Another Christmas special, incredibly titled "Roots?", features the entire main cast performing a number in blackface. That's not on Gold either.

Most of the main cast, not all. The episode also plays on national stereotype.

Quote from: Ignatius_S on September 04, 2024, 07:38:25 PMIs this going to be one of those 'technically, it's a New Wave song' sort of situations?

no...I watched it but can't remember a song in the episode

I can only find the episode on Dailymotion but Mr. Spooner's scenes in the apartment are cut, although there is a bit where you can momentarily hear the song. And I'm sure I saw a version of the episode on Gold where this scene is trimmed, probably a copyright issue.

Oh yeah and Carol Cleveland is in that episode actually. She pops up in OFaH's 'The Miracle of Peckham' which was on Gold the other day.

I watched a bunch of random episodes on dailymotion and it seems like first series was fairly humdrum, down to earth, almost Rising Damp ish real life stuff. But by the 6th-8th season Slocombe and Humphries can't come on screen without being dressed in silly outfits (punks, sailors, skateboarders, etc) and making big entrances (bursting out of crates, confetti, etc).

To big audience reaction natch.
