To be fair Stevens has nailed it. He is a really good actor. He can do "normal" subtle acting but also ridiculous OTT stuff like this and Eurovision

Just enjoyed him in "cuckoo" doing a similarly broad and loopy German accent. He's legit very funny :)

New chat is up!
Miriam Margolyes. He asks her about her "wanking policy".

Haven't listened yet - and probably won't as I'm not that interested in the guest TBH - but did Buckles say anything about Ramble Book 2, positive or negative?

The Adam and Joe thread got me thinking as the book is going to be covering the A&J years - it was originally supposed to be out in August then slipped to next year, and now I can't seem to find anything on Amazon or the Harper Collins site, so I was wondering if it was no longer happening or it was an error, especially as there were fewer pods in the first half of the year because he was writing it (amongst other things)

I think he mentioned something about work continuing on it and he's got deadlines, so sounds like it's definitely happening.

Icehaven

Yep in the intro he definitely said he was still working on the book and cited that as a reason the podcast had returned slightly later than intended.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

The Margolyes episode is great, she's an ideal Buckles guest. Very funny, sharp and interesting.

Thosworth

She'd dialed down the Professional Eccentric and was very thoughtful and reflective. I'd be happy with either, but it was a nice change.

Yeah totally agree. It's one I'd typically skip but wanted a new podcast so went with it on the basis that at least the jingles would be good while the posh old lady said "cock" and "cunt".

She broadly skated around that so fair play. It was alright.

Publish date of 10th April 2025 for Ramble Book 2, according to bookshop.org :

https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/ramble-book-2-adam-buxton/7722311

"After the phenomenal success of Ramble Book, Adam Buxton shifts his attention forward to the 90s, to write about his burgeoning career as a late night cult icon on Channel 4 alongside his childhood friend Joe Cornish. Funny, tender, and cut through with Adam's hysterical asides, the book is likely to delight his ever-growing fanbase and the many thousands who came out in force for Ramble Book."

I wish I could warm to Sam Campbell but I just can't for some reason.

The chemistry is off, it's a slightly stressful listen.

Adam's 'Australian impression' was a very poor choice to break the ice.

Not sure he's an interviewee type, seems more of a performer and preferring playing up to the crowd

johnnyhandsome

My god, maybe my hangover is painting this bleak, but Buckles is so painfully stilted with Sam. Godawful questions

Tiggles

This was like two cats trying to work out if they are going to get on or not.

I get the impression that Cambo is generally wary of interviews and Adam didn't let him do his usual thing of being charmingly and entertainingly deflecting, which definitely made things awkward. I thought Sam relaxed a bit towards the end as they built trust; I'd be really interested to hear them do this again in the future.

The Latitude on-stage stuff sounded very funny.

Thosworth

If didn't get anything awkward out of it. Sam impressed with his knowledge of Adam, and culture in general. I also really enjoyed the editing - repeatedly cutting between the one-on-one interview with the onstage performance the next day. It was really effective, I'd love it if more interviews that followed that format.

Tiggles

Yes I really loved that editing - for me it highlighted the contrast between Sam in performance mode and Sam in conversation, and maybe them just knowing each other a bit better.

And yeah I've always been impressed by the depth and breadth of Sam's cultural knowledge and intellectual curiosity. Obscure references are scattered throughout his work in a way that has sent me off to Google more than once. I'd love to hear more conversations that get into that kind of stuff with him.

Icehaven

I haven't listened to it yet but the notes say it was recorded over two days while walking round Latitude festival. Doesn't sound that conducive to a relaxed chat with someone you don't know very well.

Pranet

I thought it was an interesting and entertaining podcast. Don't think I've come across Sam Campbell before.

This has happened to me a few times on here. People say, oh that was awkward, and I listen to it, and its fine.

selectivememory

Yeah, it was ok. As I just said in another thread, I don't quite get why Sam Campbell is so hyped, but I find him likeable and funny enough.

Dunno, sometimes wonder if people are projecting a bit when they talk about Adam's conversations being awkward. It really wasn't that bad, was it?

popcorn

Whenever I feel the conversations are awkward or unsatisfying it's always because I feel the interviewee is not on Buxton's wavelength, doesn't get his humour, or is otherwise boring or annoying. In this case I don't think Campbell was providing very interesting answers and kept leaving the chat with nowhere to go.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

It was an amusing episode. Adam and Sam had decent chemistry, they were on the same silly wavelength, and it wasn't awkward in the slightest.
