Absolutely loved the first four seasons of this. Rewatched and Rewatched on dvd. Not revisited in some time so I wonder how it holds up.

Bought the four movie (is that right?) dvd at the time, and had to drag myself kicking and screaming through the end of them. My overriding memory was they were BORING. Not overtly bad, just like the first four seasons but a bland retread with no jokes.

There's only one bit from those movies I liked and has stuck in my mind. The gang were talking to a baddie leader, he announced his plot and then himself said NEH NEH NEH, but in a not very dramatic way. Loved that at the time and I've used it myself since. Not a very good rate of return from four feature length episodes.

I'm pretty sure I bought the following season 6 on dvd. Either didn't make its way out of the packaging, or started watching one episode and gave up.

Futurama for me is the first four seasons which I hold in the highest regard, although I haven't seen for quite a few years. Everything after that I'm choosing to ignore.

I'm hoping they get Ricky Gervais to be Bender. He's got a funny laugh.

Insane to go ahead with this without being certain DiMaggio can come back.

Feature length episode about Bender losing his most beloved cigar and while angrily searching for it he finds his long lost kindness chip, develops endearing relationship with Nibbler. Sits on a space bench having conversations with the universe. One day when jonesing for his cigar he calls Hermes a tubby cunt but it's okay we're allowed to laugh he's hurting

For a moment I wondered if you were actually describing the plot of one of the movies/episodes I haven't seen.

Quote from: Thursday on February 10, 2022, 09:18:44 AMYeah I remember the whole series being unsure whether or not they were actually supposed to be together, always felt like such a strange reticence from the writers.

I feel like the series as a whole was always very inconsistent as to whether it was trying to be an episodic Simpsons-type show where everything resets at the end of every episode or something more serialised with actual character development and story arcs and so on. It kind-of fell between two stools.

It would be "tubby jamaican cunt"

That's just the story from last night. They are still negotiating. Announcing it before negotiations are finished is just a negotiating tactic, like the one they used for the previous revival. Considering fan reaction, it doesn't seem to be a tactic that will work well in Disney's favour.

Captain Z

Surely they can replace him and nobody will tell the diddly-ifference?

If DiMaggio is replaced in a Futurama revival no one watches what sound does Bender make?

JamesTC

I'm so sad Bender died but at least I have my new friend Bonder. He works down the factory bonding steel girders together. He keeps saying he wants to maim all humans and that I should kiss his reflective plate posterior.

frajer

Replace him with that fella who does Jake the Dog.

king_tubby

Bender died on the way back to his home planet.

The only thing I'm curious about with this revival is did Groening & Cohen learnt anything from Disenchantment or was it only Josh Weinstein who had watched a modern cartoon?

Admittedly that just made Disenchantment's friction between being a 2010s adventure cartoon with an ongoing plot and a 1990s Harvard Lampoon screenwriter cartoon even more awkward than Futurama's attempts at continuity. But at least there was a nod towards modernism sorely missing from Comedy Central era Futurama.

If it's on Hulu does that mean no more Simpsons crossovers? Will we get a Handmaid's Tale crossover episode instead?

They could be competent and do interesting science fiction plots and it could be quite good, but that's a lot harder than having Fry find a Tesla or someone stealing The Weeknd's head.

ETA: Maybe they should reboot it, because Fry can't keep coming up with 90s references in 2022? Pretend they froze him last year, and a whole new world of jokes awaits where Fry finds his Facebook profile.

If they rebooted they could exploit the idea that the internet is fragile and we could easily end up with a lost era if enough data storage get wiped. So a 10s Fry would be from a dark age where nothing survives but his own stupid memories. I liked how in the first four seasons Fry didn't understand his own epoch any better than anyone else.

But they won't write themselves out of the chance to reference memes and have celebrity cameos.

Quote from: Wadded Beef on February 10, 2022, 12:27:22 PMCan't wait for this to turn into another 'season 5 of Arrested Development' situation.

feel like that ship well and truly sailed with the 4 feature length episodes in 2009. i was still fairly young and optimistic and couldn't believe the disappointment at a show being revived with such a drop in quality!

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

The 2010 series found its feet after a very shaky start. In fact, I'm feeling almost depressingly nostalgic about it now. Despite that, I lost interest long before it got cancelled again. I don't know who was clamouring for another series all these years later.

One of those 'fuck my hat' type things: There is a greater gap between now and the Comedy Central run than there is between it and the original Fox series.

Something about the Omicron Persei 8 variant.

2023 seems like the best part of closer to the year 3000 than it does to 1999

I can remember when 1999 seemed ridiculously futuristic.
