Small Man Big Horse

Quote from: Sebastian Cobb on August 12, 2024, 12:04:07 PMFinally got round to watching this. It's definitely quite different to what I saw in Glasgow in March 2023. The last section was a completely different thing about Hal Hartley's Henry Fool. I'd mentioned that before but didn't realise it had been dropped so a lot of you probably didn't have a clue wtf I was talking about.

I'd love to hear a bit more about that if possible as I'm a huge Hal Hartley fan and wasn't aware of Lee also (presumably) liking his work as well.

Quote from: Magnum Valentino on August 21, 2024, 06:25:53 PMAlso can anyone remember what Stew's Smash Hits fiancee was called? He and Kate discussed it.
Quote from: sevendaughters on August 21, 2024, 09:52:47 PMGina Morris

I meant to look into this but forgot. I was wondering if she was one of the unnamed women (back row, left) on the Cluub Zarathustra photograph. I think I remember that one of them is Stew's girlfriend of the time (the other, I think, was a Medieval Babe - or possibly an Opera Babe, can't remember).

Not sure if either is Gina but I'm a bit shit with faces:

I think this is Gina:

sevendaughters

middle back in the top image looks like Lore Lixenberg (the opera singer from Club Zarathustra and Attention: Scum). not sure who top left is but don't think that's her. could it be Lorraine Bowen?

They're all named except those two girls. I've just remembered that the book describes them as violinists though.

Then you've got Lore, Sally Philips, Richard Thomas. Then Eldon, Roger Mann, Simon and Stew.

McDead

Munnery there, with his sword.

Eldon looks almost exactly the same.

This has popped up on youtube for anyone that is sky-less and didn't ask for a *cough* link >

I saw the show live earlier in the year, and still found this fun. Well done Stewart Lee.

I'd cough in your direction if I thought that that would work? I don't know if it would result in something I could access on my phone.  Anyhow, thanks a trillion for the link.  And Stew, if you sail these waters, please don't do a Sadowitz!

I'm nearly at the end of this now I especially love the Jazz bit.

I once had an awkward conversation/bit of a riff with Stew after a gig about Albert Ayler.

I'm sure that's just a coincidence.

And what about the Bald bit?  Has he been reading CAB?

Marv Orange

Might have missed this mentioned but basic Lee has been posted on YouTube

Was interesting seeing reviews around the time of release reporting Stew being neurodiverse as fact.  Having seen the whole thing though, I think he was just joking.

Although it's hard to separate the man Stewart Lee from the character Stewart Lee.

It was originally more extensive and definitive earlier in the run.

Red82

Oh I see.  That's good then.

We can add him to the small list of touring ND standups.

finally saw this a couple days ago. it was good! i liked it more than snowflake/tornado

curiousoranges

I saw this live and I'm a bit reluctant to watch the recording cos they're never as good.

When in the run did you see it? The version he filmed in spring 2024 is a bit different (and much better, imo) than the version he was touring in spring 2023. So that might make it worth a quick look?

In a podcast interview with Kate Thornton a little while ago he said he'd seen a doctor who said he scored very highly on an autism test and basically yes, he's autistic, but he didn't bother getting a formal diagnosis.

There's even more doctors practicing naturopathic medicine while touring the UK scene now then? I pity the patients...

Just listened to that, thanks. Amused me that there is strong a connection/friendship between Kate Thornton and Stewart, presumed because of the Bafta thing, she was just showbiz detritus to him.

Her being a fluffy light entertainment fixture at the time, having to get a post win vox pop from him - gives him a stronger case for his rejection from the mainstream, when worlds collide! - well, the character of Stewart Lee at least - haha.

Fun to hear him to speak to someone non-comedy. Loads more interesting. Him being on the periphery of the pop scene in the 90's etc.

Red82

I'm definitely going to listen to this Thornton interview too. Thanks for the heads up.

It's great, one of my favourite podcast eps in years actually.

Wonder which one. My money's on Tom Baker.

Stew is due to be on the new series of the Headliners podcast with Nihal from 5 Live which will be out on the radio and Sunday and presumably straight after as a pod for all pod/Stew fans.

He also was on the Steve Wright tribute show on Radio 2 a few weeks ago saying how good a lot of his characters were, but it was only as a talking head every now and then, but heard it last night and thought the completists would want to know.

Surprised at that. I seem to remember FoF having a pop at Wrighty in the University of Life sketch.
