RIP Marlena Shaw

This passed me by but Marlena Shaw passed away last Friday.

I love California Shaw and her disco stuff was great as well. Plus anyone who releases an album titled Who is this Bitch Anyway? is alright with me.

Very sad to hear this.

On a trip to London some years back, me and my partner decided to go along to Ronnie Scott's one evening, and to my delight we found that Marlena was playing there. I expected a set full of 'California Soul' soundalikes but what we got was more akin to Millie Jackson. Marlena did about two and a half songs in her long set, pausing every couple of lines to tell long, rambling, bawdy tales about picking up guys on cruise liners and in hotel bars. One of the greatest shows I've ever witnessed.

That sounds ace. I'm a big fan of Jackson too, her live albums are exceptional.
