Love a bit of Peter Bouncer, I like the 'Raving I'm Raving' version without the Mark Cohn/Walking In Memphis bits (although I like the original too)

Also went down a bit of a Top Of The Pops "rave" rabbit hole last night (apologies for the spam!)

Carl Cox - I Want You Forever - 1991

SL2 (Slipmatt & Lime) - DJs Take Control - 1991

Isotonik - Different Strokes - 1991

Kicks Like A Mule - The Bouncer - 1992

Cubic 22 - Night In Motion - 1991

Xpansions - Move Your Body - 1991

Orbital - Chime - 1990 (love how bored they look, and how their equipment is so obviously unplugged!)

N-Joi - Anthem

N-Joi - Adrenaline - 1991

Bizarre Inc - Playing With Knives - 1991

Bizarre Inc - Such a Feeling - 1991

T-99 - Anasthasia - 1991

Dream Frequency - Feel So Real - 1992

Moby (with hair!) - Go - 1991

Shades of Rhythm - Extacy - 1991

808 State - Pacific - 1989

Urban Hype - Trip To Trumpton - 1992 (not a fan of all the Trumpton samples but the tune itself is a banger, produced by the great Ron Wells. Check out the B-side 'Urban Hype - I Feel The Heat' for a better version without the Trumpton stuff)

Altern8 - Evapor8 - 1991 (there's several other Altern8 appearances on TOTP on Youtube)

Congress - 40 Miles - 1991

There's also the 'Smart-Es - Sesame's Treet' TOTP appearance on YouTube but, as much as I love Luna-C, it's really bad! :D

monkfromhavana

Not as bad as the "jazz" vocal on the Congress performance.

Also, I see that Bassman's in a spot of bother, which is really unlike him....

Yeah that all sounds very grim. Always the ones you least suspect huh...

I saw a recent video of Bassman and he looked unheathily skinny, almost skeletal. I guess that's what a chronic crack habit does to you.

Junglist

When he's chatting about raping people etc on the mic, its not really a shock. Was a don MC back in the Hysteria days with Spyda, Trigga etc before they all got bigger in the scene.Tbf Palmer 'Da Charmer' was worse.

Sebastian Cobb

Nearly started a Bassman thread but didn't bother.

In other DNB news it looks like the owners of Ram Records (BMG) have decided to fold it.

https://www.dogsonacid.com/threads/ram-records-shut-down.824971/

Sonny_Jim

Yeah had a read of that thread, bit depressing but it's not like it diminishes what they achieved with the label.

Bought a cheap dance mat because I could do with jumping around a bit and was delighted to discover that you can play this on Project OutFox:

Gave it a go, couldn't do it so did some Boogie Wonderland instead.

stranger

Ram was an amazing label back in the day. I've no idea what their recent output has been like as I drifted away from upfront D&B. I remember being pretty disappointed with the 'Moving Fusion - Start of Something' album (from 2002 apparently - jeez!) and a lot of people in that DOA thread have the same opinion :D

One of my favourite Ram tracks was the Truly One '96 remix. A Kool FM favourite. That drop at 2 minutes used to cause riots!

Boisterous hidden gem from this one-and-done offshoot of 80s new wavers Kissing The Pink:

Quote from: stranger on March 21, 2024, 05:30:24 PMAah that sucks. Babylon is an all time classic

For sure and the remix

which reminds me - not sure if I posted it here before - this Pete Parsons interview was really good (he says the above is one of the favourite productions he was involved in).

stranger

Yeah that Pete Parsons interview is good. Jay Cunning's podcast is a decent listen every week and the interview episodes are always interesting.

Here's a short interview with Undercover Agent (apologies if this was already on the Facebook link above, I try and avoid FB these days!) Worth a watch anyway

First time I heard The Bouncer it was the Klaxons cover version :(

Heh, "Jimmmmyyyyyy!!"

I didn't even know though this was a thing, just listened to it.... oh dear!

In other news, Knite Club 3 tickets are on sale. It's not until September but I got a ticket already as the last one was a lot of fun.

Also Ron Wells has released another collection of old tunes on Bandcamp, The Hedgehog Affair Anthology. Lots of great tunes on there.

monkfromhavana

Currently have this compilation on as I work

https://www.discogs.com/master/1150000-Various-Routes-From-The-Jungle-Escape-Velocity

Classic tunes and a few unreleased tunes (Bodysnatch - 'Secret Summer Fantasy' and Krust - 'Asian Love Dance (Remix)'), just a shame that all the tunes are clipped at the end. Got the CD upstairs and it came with a nice booklet with the producers all talking a little about their track, how they made it and what they were thinking at the time.

monkfromhavana

Had a tooth taken out and I'm feeling all miserable and depressed, so I thought I'd whack on some happy hardcore to cheer myself up

DJ Seduction - Leaving The World Behind (DJ Ham Remix) - a very classy tune (for HH), wish there had been a few more like this.

monkfromhavana

Forgot how good this one is from 95 (well it is engineered by Hyper On Experience), love the piano and the vocal

DJ Demo - Dreamin'

monkfromhavana

Classic stuff and a great name. The schmatlzy Champaign sample in the middle is fantastic, like the dial on the radio has just flicked over from Weekend Rush to Magic FM.

The Diplomat - Top Banana Buzz Rush Junkie

monkfromhavana

Probably the maddest tune released between 1990 and 1993, but I like it. You don't get many 9 minute long hardcore tracks, and this one achieves it by cramming in enough ideas and riffs to fill at least 30 tunes.

stranger

Been listening to this amazing Ben Sims mix today. Ben Sims is a UK techno stalwart (if you like techno I highly recommend his monthly 'Run It Red' podcast, it's ace) but this mix is mainly 89-91 warehouse style tunes, with some other stuff thrown in including plenty of hardcore favourites. It's 4 hours long and it's made my work day absolutely fly by. The Soundcloud link is below and you can download a 320kbps MP3 of it here.

Ben Sims - Ilian Tape Podcast Series 100
https://soundcloud.com/ilian-tape/itps100-ben-sims

Having a listen to the Ben Sims and it just stuck me for the first time that the lead synth in Plez (first tune, absolute classic) owes at least a small debt to Was Not Was - Wheel Me Out.

Is there a tracklisting available?

I found this on his Facebook page:

Sad to hear MC Duke died recently. This one tune alone has been sampled in dozens of rave/early jungle tunes

"This is a trip, the twilight zone"
"Another jam from the Miracle maker"
"If you're lookin for an attitude, I'm the one"
"Can't beat the system, go with the flow"

...and so on and so forth

MC Duke - I'm Riffin'

Everytime this thread bumps I half expect to see someone's died - sad times - RIP MC Duke.

I'm Riffin' and to a slightly lesser extent Miracles were big tunes when I started clubbing. If he'd have got paid for everytime his vocals got sampled in the 90s he'd have been a rich man.

Quote from: stranger on April 24, 2024, 07:04:50 PMSad to hear MC Duke died recently. This one tune alone has been sampled in dozens of rave/early jungle tunes

A lot of the samples are Simon Harris' excellent beats (not to take away from Duke in any way)

monkfromhavana

And Roger Johnson too, who passed on the same day (I think).

I actually went out on Saturday to what was billed as disco/psyche/soul night with Indian music influences. First DJs played old soul / jazz funk and hip hop (including MF Doom!). 2nd DJ ended up playing 80s house tunes (The Morning After, Underground Solution - I Luv Dancing), NextDJ steps up next and it's announced he'll be playing 1992 hardcore...... which was a bit odd given the line up.

Of course, I had a whale of a time, but no-one else there seemed to have heard of this music before, but a few gamely shuffled along to it. 'Mr, Kirk's Nightmare' got a good reception though, mainly due to the sample. Was all fairly big tunes, but nice to hear The Turk and Vamp at about 8pm in a converted shop.

Last DJ, the headliner was bobbins.

The piano house equivalent of that is probably Mixmaster - Grand Piano, which seems to be several tunes crammed into one.
