Canadian telly's lack of impact in Britain

ITV's Short Story Theatre was mainly Canadian anthology segments - even kids shows like the Bamboo Brush (shown late at night) from CBC kids' Sons and Daughters. Weirdly, some of the eps of Sons and Daughters (including Home from Far) were shown on ITV directly before the Aussie soap of the same name.

I really liked Continuum. One of the few North American shows that had a satisfying ending rather than being cancelled, abandonded or "will this do?"

George White

BBC1 showed To Give what We Are, the 1974 episode of CBC's Man Alive, a religious program utterly unlike the BBC namesake.

George White

ITV showed the CTV coproduction Sidney Sheldon's A Stranger in the Mirror.

CTV showed various C5/SKY REGULAR/video library regular Mary Higgins Clark TVms like Let Me Call You Sweetheart. These began on Canadian cable, with Kim Cattrall, Christopher Lee and Barbara Windsor in the Welsh-made Double Vision (1992), which was then aired on CTV in the later 90s. This got a cable/video release in the UK.

George White

Huckleberry Finn and Friends was shown on CHCH and certain CTV stations like CFCF Montreal and CJOH Ottawa. Its main Vancouver airing (where it was made) was on Family Channel

Coronation Street is very popular in Canuckland, I've heard

It's become even more popular in the last twenty years or so since they shifted it to primetime.

Theodore Tugboat, CBC's Nova Scotian spiritual successor to Tugs/Thomas the Tank Engine (with Mamas and the Papas' Denny Doherty as Ringo), briefly aired on GMTV. Same director in Robert Cardona, but instead of stop motion and trolleys, using remote control boats and shot on video, so it looks bloody awful.

CTV it seemed coproduced First Choice/ITV/Showtime's Murder in Space, and then repeated it after its Canadian premiere on First Choice-Superchannel.

Also noticed that RTE, ATV AND UTV showed CBC's the Whiteoaks of Jalna (1972), as well as Thames. ATV aired it in a late night slot.

RTE also showed Radio-Canada's Monique Maqnicique and Le Temps d'une Paix (RTE showed it alongside Jim'll Fix It), the 1979 Donald Sutherland CBC Bethune (branded asa  'play of the month'), CBC's World About Us segment Voyage to the Sea of Ice, the National Dream, CTV's Primtiive Man specials...

Seems that the newspapers in Canada were always glad to report when one of their shows got bought by Telly Eireann.

ITV regions LIKE ATV, Granada, Southern, Anglia, Westward showed the educational series from CBC, Alphabet Soup (1971-1973) between 1974-1976.  RTE aired it too, knowing their love of anything from the Great White North.
The BBC aired CBC's Classic Curling.

ITV's Fireside Theatre included 'Yesterday was Years Ago' and other eps of CBC's Here to Stay.
The Collaborators (CBC crime series) both series ran on the ITV regions, and were re-run.

I love the fact that the Guardian is convinced that ITV-aired CBS/Warner  Patrick McGoohan drama series Rafferty is Canadian. 'Patrick McGoohan as doctor hero in Canadian drama series', and other billings referring to the series as Canadian. It was set and shot in LA.

Canadian films shown on the BBC back in the day.

CTV showed the 1968 Thames series about Mountbatten, the Persuaders/Protectors/Strange Report/the Firechasers/Department S from ITC, Please, Sir, the Whicker's World about Harold Robbins, National Geographic, the Jackie Stewart Special, the Aussie series the Timeless Land, the BBC series In Search of the Real Che Guevera, Fame, Ken Loach's Wednesday's Child and the Nelson Affair, Frost over Canada, and those CBS Agatha Christie TVMs and Central tv/NBC's Kennedy.

They were the home of Yorkshire copro Swiss Family Robinson, Due South, the STV copro the Campbells and the Littlest Hobo, and the New Avengers, Night Heat (an ITV late night regular), the Starlost (ditto), ENG (another ITV late night show).
