I'm glad people are coming round to my way of thinking on Bill Maher. Boring unfunny right-wing asshole (who occasionally criticises the right, so he's had a lot of free passes).

Quote from: iamcoop on January 22, 2022, 06:49:15 PMFor anyone wondering why Andrew Doyle has blocked them the only thing I can think of is that it's to do with pronouns in someone's bio.

He blocked my partner on Twitter (she's doesn't know who he is and has never interacted with him) and we were trying to figure out why.

She's an academic and he also seems to have blocked a lot of other academics she knows and the only thing they had in common was they all had pronouns in their bio.

Very very odd man.

Found out very recently that he used to lead Soho theatre's stand-up workshop and trained Olga Koch who's own career in comedy has now eclipsed Doyle's.

Blimey. I know right-wing comedy is largely dependent on people pretending to like something because they agree with it but even by those standards, it's weak as fuck.

That's ironic considering that Koch appears on Trashfuture (leftist podcast) and related podcasts quite a lot, and recently did a BBC podcast series with one of the main presenters (Human Error on BBC Sounds)

bet he will have blocked you for some innocuous criticism where you replied to someone who replied to him or something. if he sees ANYTHING critical or a joke at his expense, he blocks

I know the whole block vs free speech thing is a tired cliche (and gets used against people like Owen Jones), but Andrew Doyle, the failed academic's whole schtick now is FREE SPEECH yet seems to have extraordinarily thin skin.

i mean to be fair, he does look like someone's partway through making a papier mâché model of a mekon over a balloon

Seems we have the same opinion. He's a worthless, sneering prick and always has been.

I listen to the West Wing Thing podcast with Dave Anthony and Josh Olson, and Anthony is quite enjoyable on the subject of Bill Maher and how he's a talentless hack who was lucky to come up in comedy when he did.

Fambo Number Mive

Most of what I've heard Maher parp out is lazy, reactionary, divisive bullshit. Another wealthy "commentator" trying to divide ordinary people.

Apparently Bill Maher is a part owner of the New York Mets, according to this video from Eddy Burback

He also thinks adult readers of comic books "need to grow up".

I think he'd fit in well on Fox News.

Famous Mortimer

That's excellent. Fuck Bill Maher.

Quote from: peteprodge on January 24, 2022, 01:21:13 PM

That's always read as such a hilarious self-own, as it's a tacit admission that "the right" have historically been fucking shit at jokes.

This is always how you know this line is the funniest thing this person's ever said and it wasn't intended that way.

The only thing I saw Maher do was some atheist documentary a mate shoved on after the pub, I thought it was lazy boorish wank, much like Gervais' mutterings on the subject.

The collapse of the 'new atheist' thing into juvenile name-calling and arrogant prejudice makes me really glad I didn't get sucked into it when I was a teenager. I was circling around the drain for a while but thankfully, I was too busy watching football and wanking to actually pick up a Richard Dawkins book.

Retuned my Freeview especially so I could watch these GB edgelords last night out of morbid curiosity.

First thing to note was it wasn't particularly funny. Rather, it was just 3 men going through the papers chatting aimlessly. For ages. Golf course chat really. Simon Evans was alright - held it together quite well although he has an odd habit of peering directly into the camera at times with his little piggy eyes, as if he's checking it's still recording. Scott Capurro chatted a lot without being his normal thoroughly unpleasant self. Leo Kearse was - unsurprisingly - a waste of space and looked conscious of the fact he wasn't contributing anything to the conversation. It just felt a bit pointless really.

And then it ended, Farage suddenly appeared on the screen and I felt like I'd been caught watching torture porn.

I'm sure he's a lovely guy really and he only looks like the biggest mid-life crisis of a prick on the planet.

Yeah, he blocked me for that exact reason. I made some quip about him having lots of media work for somebody who spends nearly every interview he does talking about men like him being silenced, didn't even tag him so assumed he searched his own name and blocked me.

I'm not telling anyone here anything they don't already know, but the biggest snowflakes will always be the ones constantly moaning about snowflakes themselves.

Simon Evans, in his defence of the show (and of GB News in general):

Quotearound half of the panellists are life-long Labour supporters, and have been invited to review the news from that perspective.
https://www.spiked-online.com/2022/01/29/the-hysteria-about-right-wing-comedy/

He doesn't specify which half.

Kankurette

Of course Spiked is defending it. It's not hysterical to expect comedians to be funny.

j_u_d_a_s

Simon Evans, Andrew Doyle, Leo Kearse etc:

"These bloody woke snowflakes in comedy just aren't funny and are killing comedy!"

Simon Evans, Andrew Doyle, Leo Kearse etc. after they get their own showcase show on a thinly-veiled propaganda channel that invited a Winston Churchill impersonator on to mark the anniversary of his funeral, no I'm not making this up:

"It's not meant to actually be funny"

idunnosomename

I think Simon Evans can be quite funny but does seem a bit of a cunt, increasingly so. I mean he certainly knows how to write and say a joke, which Andrew Doyle objectively cannot. Dont know about Leaky Arse

Johnny Yesno

Yeah, it's a shame to see Evans involved in this because despite him being a tory, I quite like his schtick. On one of his economics shows, he was being critical of gift aid because he couldn't see why it was more important that the tax went to your particular hobby horse, neigh, donkey sanctuary than into general taxation to fund hospitals and schools. I don't think I've heard anyone in the media, left or right, express that view so it was a bit of a surprise. Tories tend to love that charity shit.

Were people hysterical about it? He mentioned being 'ratioed', but not what the comments actually said. Most of the commentary I saw said stuff like 'this'll be shit', 'don't recognise any of them', 'budget David Baddiel / Alex Brooker etc', 'is that the cunt off Balls of Steel?', 'Oh Rhona, not you as well'(my own response), or 'that's an awful lot of white blokes' - hilarious that Evans' article champions 'diversity of opinion' when discussing a programme made up by mostly white blokes, that most under-represented part of the population.

Mr Trumpet

I'm sure some of those white blokes went to state school.
