I've never really explored forums and have only ever been a member of 2: this and webofmimicry (before it imploded). What other forums are there out there that I should consider?

What other forums are you a member of? And why?

i was just thinking of posting this same thing!

occasionally look on talkbass, an american bassists forum, for double bass/electric bass stuff

Do you ever get jokers on there pretending it's a forum about fishing?

Icehaven

I used to be a regular on British Sea Power's forum but very rarely, well, never visit anymore. It was busy years ago but then went very quiet, apart from a few regulars who knew each other well irl so could sometimes feel a bit like the good old pub/forum analogy of just randomly joining a table of people in a pub without being asked.

Same here. I'm also a member at the Steve Hoffman Music Forum and Yesfans, though I post even less frequently there.

I really miss WOM sometimes. I didn't add much to the place, but T responded to one of my posts once, which was thrilling.

I used to lurk the Wildhearts and Cardiacs forums a while back (probably even more /desolate than going on an Embrace forum)

Oof, the Cardiacs forum is a wasteland since everyone deserted it for facebook. Last time I looked it was wall-to-wall spambots, except for a couple of diehards who won't go near facebook in case it eats their souls.

If you want a companion forum to CaB it's gotta be Mumsnet. It's got some good stuff and some of their threads have been featured on this forum with hilarious results. I've lurked on there a couple of times. It didn't take but that must be my fault.

The Guardian's and Daily Mail's comment section

I used to comment on the Independent comment section and I got banned. Can you believe that? No explanation just summarily locked out.

Something very melancholy about visiting an old forum you used to frequent years back, and finding it mostly quiet except a handful of old names still posting to largely indifference.

I liken it to the experience of leaving your hometown for a few years and then coming back to find nothing has moved on in your absence, the same few regulars still propping up the bar.

For me it's Notbbc, which has gradually shed members over the years to the point now where it's basically the same five or six people posting on every thread, when they post at all. I'm convinced no-one new has joined in the last five years, possibly longer. What makes them keep going back, force of habit? Surely they must know what they all think about everything by now?

St_Eddie

Double Fine (videogame developer) - I don't really post there anymore though because I feel that I've outgrown the general community.  There's a lot of love and discussion for anime, wrestling and things of that nature.  Not really my scene these days.

AVP Galaxy (Aliens and Predator fan site) - I occasionally still post there but a lot of the members do my head in.  There's a lot of fanboys/fangirls, spouting crap like 'you're not a true fan unless...', which makes for a toxic environment.

Cook'd and Bomb'd is the only forum which I regularly frequent and post within.  I'd be lost without it.

Small Man Big Horse

The only other forum I've ever been a regular member of was a small Doctor Who one. It never had a huge amount of posters but they were a creative bunch, putting out a lot of fan audios. I still post occasionally but apart from when the show is on it's depressingly quiet, though at least on the plus side a fair few have become good friends and the meet ups are well attended. Also because of it I've had sex with one woman, and seen the vagina of a second. Hurrah.

GallifreyBase
Boxden
The Booth
DigitalSpy

Used to be on loads but i gave up on a few.

Bedrock which is a prog house/techno message board.  Suddenly closed after about 15 years recently which was a real shame.  Good set of people on there.

CaledonianGonzo

eFestivals.  Funnily enough, also operated by a guy called Neil.

billtheburger

I used to use the Rotten Tomatoes forums - they took it down a few months back.

F365.com

A football forum but mostly the subjects discussed have no relation to sport. Quite entertaining.

this an elite privvy forum?

It's a closed forum due to a one man gay porn posting army that had about 1000 alts. They very rarely open registration these days though which is a shame as it could do with some new blood.

Digital Spy.

I was on Digital Spy for over a year, then a thread was started about Travellers.
I detest those filthy bastards with a passion, and used the word untermenschen
to describe them, and was immediately banned permanently, as the word was
associated with Nazi Germany, and their treatment of Slavs during WW11.

They are ever-so slightly less tolerant of extreme comments and humour than on this forum.

gib

a very tiny spinoff of a spinoff forum that started with whatever the serious atheist forum was back in the day, freethought or the randi one, i forget

at every forum drama split i went with the more tolerant posters, off the top of my head we have

a swedish libertarian
confedrate flag waving proper christian who is one of the most kind and empathetic guy i've ever encountered
autistic trump voter
2 or 3 australian lefties
2 or 3 yank lefties
northern christian lefty mum
texan libertarian/lefty woman
best Poe's Law guy ever, may well believe in flat earth + Revelations, after a decade i still have no idea
white lefty canadian woman who is old enough to have done stuff with the black panthers

love 'em all, the offical owner is a boring lefty yet MRA twat, people occasionally pay him attention but setting him aside it's really good. No one new has joined for years and no one cares. On a good day you'll get 50 posts to read.

really drunk now but that took me ages to type so POST
