What sort of electronic jigeery pokery is needed to partake in this wondrous new gaming net fest? I have a PC and a web connection, will that do or do I need one of those new fangled consoles?

all you need is zsnes, the emulator from http://www.zsnes.com/ (http://www.zsnes.com/)

then you need a controller for your pc

then you need a copy of the super mario kart game file which can be provided by myself if you cannae find it

simples!

aye, once you have zsnes, you can either use your keyboard as a controller or a gamepad if you prefer.

i'll flick through the roms and clag a RAR file together to sendspace over thiis of various driving / fighting / other multiplayer style games (mario kart, bomberman, streetfighter 2, owt else with a decent versus / multiplayer mode on it)

incidentally, ive got around 760 roms if anyone wants anything theyve not got i'll sort something out  if ive got it :)

Ahhh the irony, I have a Mac not a PC.

But I have Mario Kart(DS) and Bomberman(PS3, DS)

SNES Mario Kart's only for two.  Bomberman'd be good but we might as well just play one of the Flash clones, like Boomberman.  Or we could play Tetris Attack, that'd be good.  I'd destroy you all.

I'm pretty sure this is the game file for mario kart on the zsnes

http://www.sendspace.com/file/oiubif (http://www.sendspace.com/file/oiubif)

it doesn't need to be unzipped, just stick it in your game folder as it is and load it up

Most generic USB gamepads will be suitable, and should be configurable with ZSNES (if it's like any of the other SNES emulators).

ZSNES is for Intel Macs only, so no online gaming for me.

Anyone for a game of Urban Terror? (http://www.urbanterror.net/page.php?6)

I've picked up one on Amazon for a fiver, so will be able to give you all a beating when it turns up and I've got used to the controls - there is no way I can use the keys.

Yes it's an FPS, it's free, and I can play it on my computer against others on Windows, Linux & Mac OS X. It is also fun. There's an online game browser within the game itself and lots of people playing it.

edit: Perhaps I should stop hijacking this thread and start another for UrT.

My chauffeur and I are up for some Mario Kart - if we can work out how to connect the zsnes to the internet.
Title: Re: zsnes mario kart league (or some other multi player game)

ive just had a scan through the documents, and you have to get v1.41 to get it to connect to the net (they discontinued the netplay aspect after that. i was thinking about that snes9x thing as well, but i'll have to figure that one out from scratch.

My chauffeur and I are up for some Mario Kart - if we can work out how to connect the zsnes to the internet.

For Mac users only:

1. Get BSNES here (http://www.bannister.org/software/bsnes.htm)
2. Also get Emulator Enhancer (http://www.bannister.org/software/ee.htm) here (this permits network play and add joystick/gamepad compatibility)
3. PM/Skype me, or post here, for a game.
Title: Re: zsnes mario kart league (or some other multi player game)
Post by: NoSleep on December 08, 2009, 10:24:52 AM
Likewise (still for Mac only), for Gameboy/GBC games online go here (http://www.bannister.org/software/kigb.htm)
And GB Advance here (http://www.bannister.org/software/ba.htm)

Both with Emulator Enhancer (http://www.bannister.org/software/ee.htm) again.

Name your game and (for the SNES, GB & GBC at least) I will probably be able to find it.

edit: no network play for GB or GBA, sadly.

Post by: NoSleep on December 08, 2009, 11:41:02 AM
However, there is network play for the NES on the Mac (http://bannister.org/software/nestopia.htm) (again, with Emulator Enhancer).

will the mac emulator connect to zsnes fer windows?

Somehow, I figure it won't. You'd possibly be better off looking at an emulator with inbuilt online capability that has been ported from Windows to Mac. ZSNES is Intel Macs only, so I can't try that, but perhaps there's a NES emulator on both platforms out there.

Reminders as we're near the top of a new page.  Thanks to Ziggy for the original links.

Original ZSnes program:

http://www.zsnes.com/ (http://www.zsnes.com/)

Link to ZSnes V1.42n, the latest version which supported netplay.

http://linksadventure.no-ip.biz/programs/zsnesw142n.zip (http://linksadventure.no-ip.biz/programs/zsnesw142n.zip)

I just pasted the extracted file over the existing ZSnes file and it all seems to work fine, including potential server configuration for internet play.

Link to Super Mario Kart ROM:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/oiubif (http://www.sendspace.com/file/oiubif)

I also have a nice new fan-cooled gamepad, which seems to work quite well.

All this leaves is two questions:

1. Does anyone have any sort of save-state file with all the courses unlocked?  Not sure I can be arsed completing all the courses at the moment.

2. Does anyone want to try and play with me?  I'll be around between 7 and 9 pm this evening.  We both need the same version of ZSnes so make sure you're using the things as posted above.  Probably useful if you read the 'netplay' document included in the main program as well, so we all know what we're doing.

You don't need to unzip the SMK file, just stick the zip file in any directory you want (I have one called ROMs under the ZSnes directory) then navigate to that location in ZSnes and the game should appear.

NoSleep, (or anyone else) do you know if there's a snes emulator I can use on my old Mac G4 running OSX 10.2.8? Cheers.
Title: Re: zsnes mario kart league (or some other multi player game)
Post by: NoSleep on December 09, 2009, 02:03:03 PM
They have all moved on from the days of 10.2.8, but there should be some archives around that still have versions written when G4s and 10.2 were the new thing. Emulation tends to embrace the fastest, newest hardware & OS. I may have some old version hanging about on a CD somewhere, if you get no joy. However, they will probably not allow network play.

Thanks NoSleep, i'll see whats out there.

I actulaly posted a wanted message for a snes on freecycle recently so I could play all my old games again (my snes broke ages ago), so maybe that will come up trumps.

Why not fork out for an old SNES? I got myself a NES a little while back and it only cost me £20 or so, on Amazon.

In the meantime have a look around for SNES9x; that's the emulator I used to go with on my old G4. Perhaps the latest version might work on an old G4 under 10.2; I don't know.
Anyway, I've dug out two old dmgs of earlier versions of SNES9x for you to try:

When do we start leaguing?

Whom will I league with?

What is the nature of the league?

Races or battles or both?

What constitutes a win and a defeat?

Why don't people do mongs anymore?

Who is the president?

Does God exist?

Why do I get an overwhelming desire to kill myself?

When will I stop feeling terrible pain in my back and balls?

I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS
Title: Re: zsnes mario kart league (or some other multi player game)
Post by: daimoniac on December 10, 2009, 09:02:06 PM
i'll clag a format together for the league as soon as i know whow many we have and that it all works for everyone

a round of races, a round of battle games alternating sounds ok

in races 2 pints for a win, nowt for a loss

in battle games, 1 point for a win plus one point for however many hits you still have after winning, again nowt fer a loss...

on a side note ive also got micro machines...

Do any of the Mario Kart lovers here have Mario Kart on the Wii? I've only just got it but it seems perfect for some multiplayer party fun. You can even pick your own created Mii character as your Kart driver and I think you can have up to 12 people in a race. There'll be an initial labourious process of exchanging friend codes but after that I can't imagine the laughs letting up.

We should give it a try anyway. Obviously if weekender wins, we'll have to admit we've made a mistake and move onto another game but there's potentially a grand old time to be had. Does anyone know how to unlock your own Mii character to select as your racer?

My friend code is: 2837-0550-8492

I don't really have any reason to dislike weekender, our paths have only really crossed when he's alerted me to seinfeld and reggie perrin dvd bargains so I like him, frankly

I like him too, I just couldn't handle the bastard thrashing me and then gloating about it. Actually, it would be even worse if he didn't gloat publicly, but just chuckled to himself as he laps me constantly.*

*I could really have phrased those final ten words better, but there you go.

I'll post my code later, my girlfriend is watching something on the telly via iPlayer.

Hello.

I will play against you guys on Mario Kart Wii if you like but I don't know how to do it so please let me know if you would like me to play against you and then I will work out how to do it before 5pm. My special number is 3266-5607-6545 but if I am allowed to play is it ok if I don't use the steering wheel and use the classic controller instead even though that is sort of cheating a little bit? Because I find the steering wheel too difficult to use really. I was going to play on Zelda but this will probably be much more fun but I don't know how good I am compared with other people of course! So if you tell me that I can play with you guys I will look on the internet and find out how to do it then.

Keith

It doesn't matter what controller you're using when you play against me, you'll lose anyway.

You're more than welcome to play though!

Here's an easy guide on how to play online (assumes you have the WiFi already set up):

Load up Mario Kart
Select Nintendo WFC - 1 or 2 players
Click Friends
Click Register Friend Code
Type in Friend Code

Both players must have done the above otherwise it won't work.  I have added buntyman and Keith, now they need to do the same with my code.

Once that's done, someone needs to create a room (I will do this at the earlier of 5pm or when I've finished having a bath), then I think it's just a case of being invited.

Anyone else up for a blast?

Please also note that after a few grand prixs I will want a cigarette so there may be a short pause between games.

Yeah as predicted, you were a million times better than us. You might as well have been doing time trials for the amount of times you saw any of your competitors. How do you go so much faster? Special vehicle or just mastered the drift boost thing? Keith and myself (also a Keith) had some tight finishes for the closely contested 2nd spot anyway so it wasn't completely soul destroying. I had to head off for tea after a couple of GPs but would be keen to try it again. Maybe weekender could be handicapped with DK and a shite car

Hello.

That was really great fun. I was easily the worst player out of all three of us because I came last in every race pretty much but it was still great fun to play the game like that. Hopefully more people will join in the next time we do that because it would probably be even more fun with more people playing the game like that.

Buntyman and weekender were both really good and in the end it was just me and weekender and the only time I ever saw weekender was at the start of the race! After the start of the race I didn't see weekender once!

Anyway I had a great time so thank you weekender and Buntyman for those races that we had and I will definitely practise more on this game so that I'm not so rubbish at it.

Do you really think I'm going to tell you? To do a super-start, hit the accelerate button just after the '2' starts fading away.

Heh, I was playing automatic to go easy.  I can do the drift boost thing, but it takes a lot more effort.

Hello.

I have just added you, ziggy starbucks, on to my friends list on the game so we will be able to race against each other the next time we play the game like that. Unfortunately I can't play anymore tonight because I have to get ready to go out in a minute but hopefully we can all do that again soon like maybe in the week one evening.

Yep, I can do that, probably only until about 9.45pm at the latest if that's OK?  Being ugly I have to sleep earlier and earlier these days.

ok then. Although if you get bored of beating me after 30 minutes you can just end the game early. I'll understand.

cheers for the game weekender. I didn't get the hang of chatting in the room so I probably came across as a bit rude. You really are a mario kart master, although in my defence those mirror tracks confuse the life out of me.

You can't really chat in the room, you have to pray someone's on your wavelength.

Well done on taking some games off me.  I am now:

Won: 26
Lost: 2

Is anyone up for a spot of FPS? Aside from Urban Terror (http://www.urbanterror.net/page.php?6), which I've been enjoying immensely for the last few weeks, and is completely free to download and play, I've discovered another great, free, FPS - Open Arena (http://www.openarena.ws/files.html) - again built on the Quake3 game engine. It plays like a dream (smoother than Q3, it seems to me), and there's always a game going on sometime, somewhere. Plus, the player standard is not so rock hard (there's nothing but 10-year veterans on the Q3 servers these days) that I just get wasted by opponents that I didn't even see coming (I've almost won Open Arena Free For All a couple of times). It's only 304MB download, and has a built-in single player campaign to get you started before you go online (although I would get in there straight off - it's more of a laugh against human opponents).

OK, Baxter. There are plenty of empty servers, so we could meet up in the CaB chatroom, choose ourselves a game to join. I'm going to take a look there right now, then see if you're about in the chatroom. My moniker is The_Mysterious_Loser, but I might be going for the easier NoSleep any time now.

No worries. Playing between OpenArena & Urban Terror, last night, I managed to not notice the time until it was 6AM, which genuinely surprised me as to how the time had passed by so quickly.
I've turned alerts on in my chat room client, so if you enter or type my name (in the CaB chatroom) we can arrange to play.
Found a list of active servers here (http://dpmaster.deathmask.net/?game=openarena&sort=gametype&hide=both) for pre-game discussion (would love to have a pre-launch browser for OA - I have one for Urban Terror, already).

Hello.

When are we playing the game like that again because I thought we were going to race against each other tonight so is that still happening and if it is then at what time then? Also, mook, I haven't added you to my friends on the game yet but I will do it in a little while after Beetlejuice is over and also after I have had my dinner so then we can race against each other in the future if you want to.

I am really looking forward to racing against everyone again but I haven't practised very much because I was playing this other game where you're a little kid and you live in this town with these weird animals but it is quite boring really because there's no action so I am looking forward to playing Mario Kart Wii again.

Off the top of my head, here's where they can be used to maximum effect in order:

-First downwards ramp
-Over the little orange chevrons to do a super jump
-Through the bats
-Down the next ramp
-Past the minecarts
-Down the last ramp if you choose to go that way instead of the shortcuts
-On the last straight

Hello.

Well once again that was wicked-cool fun and hopefully there will be even more people playing the game like that next time because it's definitely more fun with more and more players! I hope everyone had as much fun as I did playing the game like that. My favourite bit was when we played this special game where we had to collect coins because I had never played that special game before and it was so crazy and we were in teams for that bit so that was different from how the game normally is as well. Thank you to everyone for playing on Mario Kart Wii with me this evening.

Hello.

I'm so sorry weekender but I didn't see your message until just now which is obviously too late because I've been busy decorating my Christmas tree which turned into a real nightmare because the tree is seven feet tall but the lights were only five feet long and I thought that that would be long enough for the lights pretty much but I had forgotten that you have to actually wrap the lights around the tree so they're actually nowhere near long enough and I tried everything but it was hopeless so I gave up in the end and the tree looks so rubbish because the whole bottom half of it is in complete darkness. If I had known that it would end up looking so rubbish I wouldn't have bothered doing it at all and just thrown the tree out of the window because last year I didn't even have a Christmas tree and it wasn't a big deal and then also if I hadn't bothered decorating the tree this evening then I could have played on Mario Kart Wii which is a much more fun thing to do than decorating a Christmas tree for five hours of course. Can we please race against each other in the week one evening? And also are there any other people who would like to play Mario Kart Wii with us? Because I can't stop thinking about how much fun it would be if there were lots of people all playing that special game where you're in teams and you have to get as many coins as you can because it was so awesome with four of us but I think it would be even more awesome than that if there were more than four of us.

I would definitely like to play as i enjoyed the previous races immensely despite the obvious superiority of weekender. I especially enjoyed racing Keith Bland because he's very good but not as dominant as weekender so we fight hard for positions during races and hit each other with shells. It was also fun having Boki in the races because is a nice man who is also a fan of Mario kart on the Wii. It would be nice to have more people because then its more likely that someone will get one of those flying death shells that annihilate the leader who is usually (always) Weekender. This will give Boki, Keith, myself and others a greater opportunity to win races.

I'm at the pantomine tomorrow so probably won't be around until 8pm

Yes!!! Finally I was able to get my revenge* on Weekender! The first GP was quite close to be fair as I refamiliarised myself with the controls but the 2nd was a bit of a demolition. My favourite courses came up to be honest so maybe I got a bit lucky but you have to admit there was a good distance between us at the finish line every time. Maybe you should consider going back to 50cc basics! Thanks for the games anyway, hopefully we'll get another game arranged soon.
