Title: What FF games are worth playing after FFVII?
Post by: The Boston Crab on December 19, 2018, 06:25:51 PM
Come on. I played a few hours of 8, not good enough. That was the end of the line til XV which is one of the worst games ever made apart from the graphics and food porn. I hear some of the ones in between are great. Which ones, please?

My bro says Ten and Twelve, I think, but I can never remember because they're just numbers.

8 is not that bad, but it suffers coming after 7. The only other one worth playing is 10. I know that people go on about 9 but the story and gameplay are for bairns.

9 is good.

I have a really petty requirement for FF games, and it's that they don't look like Saved By The Bell: The College Years. It's not like I'm playing them for their gameplay, so the aesthetics really have to be just right.

XII is my favourite (above even FFVII). I especially like that it is set in Ivalice (like Vagrant Story and FF Tactics). The combat system is very good, allowing you to program your team, using increasingly complex AI, so that they automatically back you up, attack, heal, whatever.

X is good, too.

Final Fantasy IX is definitely a good 'un (second only to VII in my opinion).  Some of the character designs are a bit weird/gross but it's got a great atmosphere, a decent abilities system (none of that horrid junctioning/drawing from VIII), a fun yarn and a killer soundtrack.

10 out of 10 - Best game ever made (aside from Final Fantasy VII).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Final Fantasy VI is likely the best of the games, prior to VII.  There's some horribly tedious grinding involved though.

10 out of 10 - Best game ever made (aside from Tiddlywinks).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Final Fantasy X is an irritating festival of twats and the point where I gave up on the series.

10 out of 10 - Best game ever made (aside from literally every other game ever made, especially Final Fantasy VII and Tiddlywinks).

No clue if X holds up at all but I liked it an awful lot around the time. Played IV around the same time and it was my favourite of the lot, doubt it holds up. VI is solid.

Maybe Bravely Default? It felt way more like an FF game than the more recent iterations of FF

Tactics and Tactics Advance are a different thing but good too

Not a fan of IX myself, it was a refreshing change from VIII but it dragged like hell for me.. think I was more invested in VIII's story even, tbh

As long as I can simply describe every game as 'an irritating festival of twats', then yes.  Yes, I can.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy

Obs.

7, 9, 12, Chocobo Mystery Dungeon and Theatrhythm. The entire rest of the series is awful.

Everyone has a different opinion of FFs.

VII and X were my favourites, but I quite enjoyed VIII (ignoring the draw system thing).  Hated XII, I guess because that's when things changed.  XIII was alright.  Couldn't be arsed with the follow-ups and got bored of XV.

Thanks, I counted up the votes and it's 9 then 10 then 12. I think I'll just watch some LPs this evening because I'm ill. Cheers, gents.

Yeah I like 9, I feel like it's one you could go either way with. I don't think it's the most mechanically interesting Final Fantasy, but I think it's the most heartfelt, it's the last one a lot of the old school team worked on I think, and it feels that way. The last one before all the wanky emo Tetsuya Nomura elements enveloped the series.

Still have the fondest memories of Dragon Quest V (the one with the wives).  The purest, least fatty fantasy they ever did.  If you're not into sprites, though, DQ8 might be worth looking into for a decent follow up to FFVII.  It's about on a par with FFIX.

VIII, IX and probably X.

Somehow forgot to mention  IX when  going through them, loved that one.   Not as much as VII and X, but close.  Indeed it was very much  the last hoorah of the classic FF, though XII was kind of classic style but with MMORPG kind of gameplay.

Replayed FFX a couple of months ago.  Yeah, started the linear pattern of the others, and Tidus' "This is my story" mantra must have fucked off everyone around him, but it is a pretty good game.  The floaty cut-scenes with the out of sync dialogue didn't bother me at all, and I did shed a few in that snoggy tree pond sequence.  Plus it's got the voice of Bender in a major part!  There's a series on Netflix about a guy who bonds with his taciturn, retired dad by getting him into FF Online, and it's surprisingly not shite at all. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6497076/

FF9 was the last one in the series I really enjoyed, although I know it's seen as a minor entry. FF1O seemed to begin the trend of having absurdly long intros in which the story goes nowhere and gameplay elements are drip-fed to the player. I ducked out without even getting through all the shrines and didn't come back until I got a review copy of FF13, which I hesitate to even call a game really. After 13 hours of that, and only just reaching the point where I had access to guardian forces and enough combat options to really as gameplay, I fucked the whole series right off.

...I got a review copy of FF13, which I hesitate to even call a game really.

Yep, it's appallingly bad.  The "game" essentially plays itself, instead choosing to focus on the story.  Which would be alright, I suppose, if only the story wasn't the worst atrocity ever conceived by a human being and executed in a way which dethrones the conception itself of its status as the worst atrocity ever conceived by a human being.

10 out of 10 - Best game ever conceived by a human being.

I doubt I've really enjoyed a FF game since VIII, which I wouldn't mind going back to sometime (if I could find the lead to connect my PS1 to my tele). IX didn't do a lot for me, and at the time I considered the setting pretty dull after VII and VIII.

X was fine, I guess. But XIII was an atrocity and I didn't really find much to shout about in XV either. Boring characters going through stories I fail to give a shit about.

VII I must have played through about five times over the years, VI is the other I'd certainly like to revisit at some point.

The main thing that annoys me about final fantasy 13 is that what I'd imagined it would be from reading early previews was so much better than whatever they actually came up with. I thought it'd be about this floating island world where the poor people live and the planet above where all the rich people lived, and basically the plot tension builds from that concept.

And "fal'Cie" and " l'Cie" are the worst most unwieldy words ever conceived in all of Fiction. The just sound so horrible in the mouth.

Always sad when people ignore 14 for being an MMO, even when it's pretty justified. The story going into the expansions is one of the best they've ever told, the music is sublime and it's basically the best/'truest'  FF content they've put out since 12.

aving said that, it's like a 50+ hour game before you hit the expansions and if you skip that you end up with no clue how to play or what's going on.

I'm very glad I devoted a summer to it, really enjoyed Storm blood, keep meaning to return and catch up with the patch content and am 100% in when Shadowbringer drops next summer. But yeah, I get it.

I quite liked the few hours I played of XIII because you just run forward along a corridor and won all the battles by mashing X. That saved a lot of time.

The best Final Fantasy game is X-2: it's got fanservice, dressing women up in skimpy clothes, homoerotic minigames... presumably has other features. It's like the lighthearted parts of FFXV except there's a really good progress/battle system in there.

It'd be interesting to see if it works at all if you haven't suffered through X first.

Yeah I love X-2, it's a nice lighthearted game which is a breath of fresh air between main FF games.   And job system :D

FFVIII's alright, but I found the only way to get the most out of it was to follow loads of guides to figure how to win the stupid card games, and then it becomes ridiculously easy.

Before that I would invariably play to disc two and then give up at the boring prison sequence.

I didn't have a guide and found it easy enough to complete (whereas the final run in the crater for VII was rock hard in comparison; only finished it by buying a guide, rearing chocobos for 20 extra hours and acquiring Knights of The Round). It was a decent game to play but the story and the characters were far less engaging than VII and I didn't like the music as much, either.

I enjoyed it but the story is so slight it almost doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy game. The first few chapters are great. I thought 'this is exactly what I wanted' but then the last chapters rush through some linear set pieces in one of the most lacklustre second halves ever and all the great characters barely get any more screen time after their initial introductions.

Yeah, I never used her either, except for the purposes of grinding her (ooh err) up to level 99.  I mean, this was even back in the pre-achievment days, so what exactly was the point?!  Ah well, just another thing to add to the stack of poor choices which constitute a wasted life; destined to be rued on my death bed with great shame and deep remorse, I suppose.

Erm, explain?

I'm never much of a fan of the obligatory "happy go lucky" character.  There's staying cheerful in the face of desolation and then there's just being annoying.  I did like that Vanille had more depth though (i.e. goes completely batshit when Sazh voices annoyance at it and explains *why* she acts chipper all the time)

The alternative would to be the English term, which is now firmly in the alt right playbook. Next we'd have to start discussing how much of a Feminazi Yuna is.

Didn't these have a battery which means the data goes when the battery dies? Or was that just gameboy cartridges?

VII and IX can both be completed using nothing but attacks, items and Limit Breaks.  I haven't got around to trying this with the others yet.

For replay value, I'd say that VII is the best of all the ones I've played (IV - XIII).

Agreed.  I've completed VII around 6-7 times.  Whereas, I've completed VIII and IX twice each and for any other games in the series which I've played, I've either completed them once or I've given up halfway through (or in the case of XIII, about 5 hours in because it's absolutely bloody awful).

Prompted by this thread, I have just begun a playthrough of FFVIII, using only attacks and Limit Breaks.  The downside of this is that I can't revive or cure my characters mid-fight, as apparently you need to junction a GF to use items in battle.  I've just been killed by the Elvoret in Dollet.  It was a combination of a dodgy controller, and terminal indecision when using Selphie's Limit Break.  Frankly I'm amazed I made it as far as I did.

Famous last... words?

Um.

Ah.

Hmm.

Oh dear.

Well, I've got as far as the end of the Missile Base, but the ironclad boss is giving me a lot of trouble.  Without a monumental amount of luck I may have to declare myself beaten.

That boss took me multiple attempts to beat and that was during a regular playthrough, using all of my magics and curing myself like a great big bruised and battered sissy!

I'm depending on Selphie's Limit Break - I think I may try going in with her on low health.  It's either that or waste time twatting her in the battle itself, which is how I finally beat the bastard on the train.

Anyway, getting back to the point of the thread - VI is definitely worth a play, although it might jar a bit if you're dependent on battle animation in a FF game.  Actually I wouldn't mind a remake just to give the visuals an upgrade.

Less battlewank animation is half of the allure of the earlier games.

Oh i'd add Lost Odyssey to this thread.

Incredible game.

Blue Dragon, to a lesser extent.

+1

The unofficial Final Fantasy

Or "the real FFXII" as I called it at the time (wasn't keen on the official one)

All I can remember about Lost Odyssey is there only being one good voice actor (the comedy wizard guy) and a really long, tedious bit where one of the kids has to trudge up a really long bridge, really slowly, in a blizzard. Also there being nobody much to talk to and nothing to find in the very linear towns. Got bored and dropped it. So no, I do not third these votes.

Good point.  Not an over-the-top remake, then - just some tweaks to make the movement more natural, rather than the existing slide of static sprites.  Retain the retro look, without the grating.

The thing about FFVII though is that it's an absolute top tier game. I've still never experienced a game that's come close in terms of my investment in the characters, world and plot. It made me empathise with a stuffed bear being ridden by a magical cat, for fuck's sake.

I enjoyed X, most of IX, parts of VIII and half of XV, but they're just no better than good RPGs. VII was the game-changer and is genuinely one of the greatest games ever made. The remake could be absolutely magic if they update it with the leaps and bounds made in terms of technological advancement in gameplay and graphics, but leave the story the fuck alone. Which they won't. But just imagine a game that looks as beautiful as FFXV but with the levelling and materia system, story, setting and characters of VII. That's a winning mix right there.

I wonder if this Brexit business would ever have happened if people had taken my advice all those years ago and called the Euro the Gil instead.

I can only agree 100% to this. I go back to about December 1999, I'm living in student halls and have gone over my ankle badly and can't get around. Out of sympathy, a flatmate lends me his PS1 while he goes home for the weekend, along with "this game I can't be having", which was FF7.

I'd been an avid gamer in my early years, from ZX Spectrum to Sega Master System to Amiga 600, but then lost interest in anything beyond the latest Champ Manager. I doubt I had ever played any kind of RPG, but this game wrapped me into it's world in no time. I would guess I put in a good 20 hour shift at first.

Metal Gear Solid had a similar effect around the same time, but I think FF7 ranks as the most rewarding gaming experience I've ever had. I played the ported PS4 version last year and it still hit the right spots, still laughed when Cid bellows "sit your arse down and drink your goddamned tea!" and when he chews Cloud out for his "let's mosey" line.

It's funny how Cloud is remembered as this angsty emo character when the reality doesn't really live up to it at all. I mean he's full of stuff like that. I mean early on he's this jaded mercenary type, but even that doesn't really fit the "emo" thing.

I feel like the characters are often vague enough that you project a lot of character onto them yourself because the translation means you have to. And I guess he's remembered that way because that's how a lot of american 12 year old's interpreted it. But then that became how they wrote him, and it's probably how they'll write him in the remake.

I agree with that and it's part of the charm of being able to name the characters - you end up naming them after people they remind you of and it adds extra edge to the story, that's it you and your mates on this journey. VI was particularly great for this.

I'm excited and terrified for the VII remake in equal measure.  They'll either fuck it up or enhance a masterpiece

Yeah I never saw him that way and I named myself after the daft sod.  He had (more than) a few things going on in his head, and the younger me identified with him for some reason growing up but I wouldn't say angsty emo type.   That's more Squall's domain.

Locke's picture always reminds me of Nagsworth.

I was around 18/19 when I played FFVII and VIII for the first time, perhaps the perfect age. Stroppy get that I was, I probably related to both Cloud and Squall in various ways. And, yeah, I named the Rinoa character after a girl I fancied but never got anywhere near. Eh, the folly of youth. I often think my interest in the FF games dipped when you couldn't rename the characters - I'd sacrifice voiceovers for that again.

I note VIII has not been re-released on PS4 yet (unlike VII, IX and X), which might say something about it's reputation.

I'd be happy with just a straight port like they did with FF7. Not sure I'm arsed about the total remake they're doing of VII... for one thing I imagine it'll all be voiced and cute ninja girl won't be named after my friend Mariko anymore, for instance.

Pretty sure I was 16/17 as I remember thinking "wow Squall is my age" by the time VIII came around  and yeah I did identify with a lot of his stuff as well like "thinking too much".
It was a bit of a trip replaying it a little while later and thinking "well fuck, now I'm 'old' and no longer his age" :(

Thought I heard something about how VIII was written that it's not as easy to re-release and they'd basically have to remake it.  Maybe,  but it's not exactly the most popular...

Complete aside - I remember for VIII, IX and X being massively excited and buying them on release day, then playing nonstop until finished.  Fair to say those days are behind me now, I got XV like 6 months late and still haven't finished it...

I once wrote and arranged this song I was dead proud of, only to realise the second I'd finished that I'd ripped the whole thing off the opera sequence in VI.

I now know the answer to the opening post is Final Fantasy Tactics (originally on the PSX). In actual fact the best version of the game is the remake for the PSP (Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of The Lions) as there is a superior translation from the original Japanese and upgraded CGI cutscenes.
