Got to be honest, a lot of rumours floating round that we gave up too soon on TGP. Could well still make a return under new name, just looking for some fresh investment. I still got all the game shit in a lock up in Lymm. Just so boring going in and cleaning up and serving cunts drink

I think it's already shaping up to be a good year on Switch. Assuming we get them, we have a Luigi's Mansion sequel (the original is great), Daemon Ex Machina (that game about the big mechs), the first console Fire Emblem in years, a sequel to the only good Yoshi game in years (namely the Wii U one), and the first proper console Pokemon. I don't care about Animal Crossing or whatever, but that too.

Throw in even two of the rumoured games and I'll be very happy indeed.

Fire Emblem for 20 minutes
Smash DLC for 15 minutes
Yoshi for 15 minutes
Free new Mario Party board.

Mario Maker Port/Remake
Metroid Prime 1 / 3 Port/Remake
Pikmin 3 Port/Remake
Assassins Creed Port/Remake
Phoenix Wright port release date

A Pokémon logo with Fall 2019.
Animal Crossing is Amiibo Festival 2

Just like last year this is probably going to be a bad year for the Switch. I expect a lot of ports/remakes everybody played already and expect the new titles to be postponed into 2020.

I suppose it depends on whether or not the new games are interesting to you or not. Daemon Ex Machina, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, and to a lesser extent, Yoshi, are all games I'm excited, but not delirious about.

Metroid Prime 1, if it gets ported, is imo, an actual masterpiece, and one of my three favourite games of all time (Smash, and BOTW, fact fans). Pikmin 3 is excellent, and could really benefit from a revised control scheme. It's one of the few Wii U ports I'd actually bother with, if true.

The other two big rumoured games... both would make me very happy indeed, but I don't really expect to hear about them before E3, even if they are real.

The problem with Nintendo is that you always need to go in with the lowest of expectations, but it's impossible not to get hyped, when you consider all the rumours and possibilities.

Agreed. I thought it looked interesting, maybe fun for a week or whatever, but I've yet to see anything that really wowed me. The backgrounds look a bit samey, at the moment, and I'd like to see some more of the combat. I'm cautiously optimistic, though.

Same here.

I read a Dutch preview about Yoshi and the guy said the game was more of the same, but that it's supposedly a very short game and not very impressive. I also have all the supposed remakes already on Wii U and Gamecube. So I'm going into this Direct with very low expectations. Hope they have a good new title up their sleeve.

Yoshi, as I suggested above, is a title that's looked worse the more I've seen of it. I really liked the Wii U game, but I'm not loving the idea of having to play through levels twice in this one, and it generally seems a lot slower paced this time around. I won't be getting it unless the reviews are good, but I've still not lost hope completely.

Post by: Kelvin on February 13, 2019, 10:40:09 PM
FUCK. YES.

Top down Zelda, with gorgeous art, love it. Never played that one, either, so I'm totally fine with it being a modern remake of a game from 20 years ago.

I didn't think they did a good job showing Fire Emblem. Far too much focus on the training school, not enough about the actual combat or conflicts.

I also thought it was obvious that the graphical gap between Switch games and the other consoles is just getting bigger and bigger. Mario Maker, Zelda and Daemon Ex aside, they all looked badly dated.

Overall, I was happy with it, though. 4-5 games I know I want, and a few others I'm curious about.

Remake after port after remake. Annoying.

Mario Maker 2, Luigi's Mansion, Daemon Ex Machina, Yoshi, Astral Plain, and Fire Emblem are not ports or remakes.

You might not be interested in those games, but they're all new games in their series.

Luigi wasnt in the Direct was it?

No, I actually wrote that post when you first wrote yours, and only posted it at the end. Scrap that game, as we still don't know for certain it's out this year.

I still think you're talking out your arse about no new games. Mario Maker, Daemon X, Yoshi, Fire Emblem, and Astral Plain are all new games from Nintendo or one of their associated teams. Zelda is a remake of a game from over 20 years ago, not just a quick port from the Wii U. I presume we also still have Pokemon, but they never show those games in Directs like this.

You might not like those games, you might think they look bad, or they aren't your thing. But "no new games" is simply not true. I do have a lot of question marks about those games, but they are new experiences.

Oh, and Animal Crossing too.

That's 7-8 new Nintendo (or Nintendo published) games this year. I honestly think I'm interested in twice as many games this year as in year one. It just doesn't have the massive tent poles like BOTW or Mario Odyssey.

Hey mate I apologized for my immediate reaction to the Direct. Was just disappointed. No Animal Crossing or Pikmin or Metroid or Pokemon does that with a Nintendo fan.

Twed and Kelvin are right. Mario Maker is cool and Toad DLC awesome. And that 8 bit part of Dragon Quest looked dope.

Was just hoping for more new new games thats all.

That AC3 port for example is not necessary imo

Title: Re: Nintendo Direct Feb 2019
Post by: brat-sampson on February 13, 2019, 11:21:02 PM
AC3 is trash, but Maker 2 and Awakening Remake both look like utterly brilliant games. I haven't played Awakening since I was a wean, so will probably go back in. I'm not fussed about FE and still think it was a decent direct. It didn't show anything like Animal Crossing or Pokemon but we know they're both coming this year anyway, and Metroid just got reset, so would be surprised to see anything on that even this year. At least they managed expectations with that earlier video.

No you're not, you're delighted.

The main thing I'd want from a Mario Maker sequel is a world builder - the ability to create an overworld map with multiple levels and an ending. That would give more purpose to collecting coins and it would incentivise ramping up the difficulty rather than just trolling with ridiculous stuff right off the bat, and I think it would lead to some really creative, cool stuff. I think having your own worlds would lead people to design them as real games rather than doing lots of one and done piss take levels.

Hmm. I love that art style, but it being for Link's Awakening sits weirdly with me. That game has an incredible atmosphere, and it left a huge impression on me (especially the ending!), and changing it from low-res GameBoy green monochrome to this bright colourful world where everything looks like cute little wooden toys... I don't know.

That "26 years ago" did add a thematically appropriate touch of discomfort and melancholy, though. The Legend Of Zelda: Dead Soon.

In hindsight they should have released Oddysey last year instead of 2017. That would have made one steller GOTY each year. 2018 wasnt the year of the Switch.

Well, Smash was their big game last year, and it's already sold better than Odyssey and botw, I think.

I agree it was a sparse year last year, though. I got by on the Indies and 3rd party games  but I definitely felt the lack of new, quality AAA games mid year.

Likewise. Although I've not got high hopes for Yoshi – I barely played Wooly World. The legacy of Yoshi's Island has been such a disappointment.

Tried Yoshi it's good. It's not Yoshi's Island (nothing has ever matched it) but it's good. I liked the 3DS one a lot though so pinch of salt eh.

I've been curious to try Fire Emblem, because it seems a bit like Xcom... but it does look a bit too anime tit game. I mean I like Persona games and other anime things... but ick.

It's basically just high-budget cunt wars.

Maybe I'm an awful sexist, or maybe I've just gone full gay, but I honestly didn't notice there being a lot of boobs in it. It just looked like a dull Harry Potter game with really ugly combat sequences. I wish they'd gone all out on a more cartoony art style for the landscapes.

I do want to try a Fire Emblem game, though - they always review well - so I still think I'll give it a try, regardless.

Yeah, it's more just that it looks really cheesy.

Yeah, I think that's definitely a staple of the series. Very earnest and proper.

Tetris99 is nice and stressful. I’ve came second twice, but the person coming first is usually a fucking beast.

Yeah can't wait to give that a go. What an excellent idea. I hope they flesh it out into a full game like the brilliant Tetris DS. That Zelda game looks great too

The two Fire Emblem games on the GBA were excellent, I realise that might not be much help three generations later. But I do know It's not a series aimed at anime titty perverts on the whole.

Tetris 99 is ace. It's a shame it'll only have a limited shelf life, and it could do with a bit of polish. But Tetris is Teris.

This image paints 2019 in quite a good light:

Also suggests the first half of the year is fairly sparse, with a busy 2nd half.

Played the demos. Yoshi was okay, I liked the way the mission centered around the train, and playing the level again backwards worked better than I expected... but it's very, very easy, and honestly quite plodding next to Woolly World and the superlative original game. The biggest problem, though, was the mechanic allowing you to walk into and out of the backgrounds.

In the backwards level especially, I had several places where I couldn't tell if I was able to move through a door or what plane of perspective something was on, making collecting items, aiming and avoiding enemies slightly harder than it needed to be. Not a big issue, but a bit odd, considering that's the game's big mechanic. At least aiming works well, and benefits from an auto aim - although again, this made the game feel too easy, really. I also thought the graphics were a bit disappointing, with the backgrounds looking quite jagged. Anyway, it pretty much confirmed I won't be buying it - certainly not at full price, anyway.

As for Daemon X, I thought it was good fun, but still needs polish. Reminded me a lot of the Rogue Squadron games, actually, but with really obnoxious characters constantly yammering away over the action. The mechs control well and the combat was fun and arcadey. It didn't run all that smoothly, though, and the story/cut-scenes/dialogue/characters all seem pretty dull and annoying. I did enjoy the core gameplay, though, so I think it will depend on reviews and, bluntly, the price point, as to whether I get this at launch or not. It's not gonna change anyone's life, but it would be a fun way to spend a week or two, from what I can tell.

I agree on those. It breaks my heart they've decided Yoshi is a Ceebeebies platformer series, because it just makes it a bit worthless.  It feels like Kirby, and I don't understand who these games are for – when I was a kid I'd play much tougher stuff than I'd bother with now, so it's not like children need crazy easy games just for them.

And the aesthetic is a bit off – it's a cloth Yoshi, in tilt-shift cardboard Micro Machines land, with shiny metal coins floating about. The 3D aiming stuff is very clever and feels very Nintendo, but the moving back and forth is a bit clunky.

Daemon X Machina is fucking weird, in that I think there's a game in there that I could really enjoy, but it feels almost pointedly aimed away from me too. It's a mixture of really simple intuitive arcade gameplay and overcomplicated bollocks.

I'm slightly unsure about the controls (having to press analogue sticks in is always horrible, the moreso for a common action where the opposite action is a simple button press) but much less so than I was expecting, and I'm not entirely sure what is going on all the time, but the small set of actions is to my liking, it doesn't feel unweildy and the lock-on system is good. And I like the look of it.

But then there's a lot of superfluous stuff. The first thing you are asked to do is design a character, with a lot of different options... And you never see the character in play! They only appear in a weird hub area, which in itself just gets in the way because you have to walk to a thing and then go through an unnecessarily convoluted menu system to get to the next level. It's a total waste of time.

The levels continue after completion, with you doing nothing for 90 seconds unless you press a skip button. I just played the second level, where some massive baddies appear, and I'm busy trying to target it's arm with it having no effect for a few minutes... before a cut scene has two new good guys (?) appear and kill them for me, before dumping me back in the finished level with nothing to do.

I don't usually play this sort of thing, so are these common Japanese Robot Sim tropes or something? Concentrate on the gameplay and it's actually a promising game.

I'm hoping Crafted World gets harder later on. Woolly World was never a hardcore platformer but it put up a bit more of a fight than this. As said above, there's an almost Kirby-like lack of challenge here.

Will wait for reviews.

Woolly world was easy, but it ramped up if you tried to 100% each level. I used to try and get a good score on each level before moving on, rather than just blasting through each level. It's pretty clear from the demo that this will be the case in the new one, too.

Yeah, but replaying levels to hunt down background cutouts of cows doesn't seem like the most fun.

Tetris 99 is fun, because it's Tetris. Well, it's modern Tetris, with its stupid tension breaking endless-reposition and block-hold rules.

I'm not sure there's much longevity in it. Hard dropping hundreds of blocks like a veteren doesn't seem to give much of a ranking advantage versus just leisurely letting about a dozen blocks fall in their own time.

That's so obviously wrong I don't know why you even wrote it. It requires significant strategy beyond even the ability to play high level Tetris.

Just played a game where I pressed nothing but left and right. Didn't rotate a block, just let them fall. 30/99.

Everything pre-Awakening is great in this regard, unfortunately one of your sisters in the last game is 40% titties. The rub your Pokemon’s face feature from the 3DS Pokémon games is also a feature in the Japanese version of the last game. It’s removal from the localized versions of the game was actually a big issue for a surprising number of massive creeps

Tetris tip: If you use the long block you can clear up to four lines at a time! This is known as a "four-block-at-a-time-line-clearer".
